Elara felt the air shifted into something different, cool, fresh and a little bit accepting. She was oblivious to the lone tear falling down her face as she watched the drip flow into her vein. She felt refreshed at the thought of having her friend back. Not with her because she's not deserving of her presence but at least she could watch her from afar.
The constant anguish she felt at the thought of losing her friend loosened a bit. She shouldn't have been involved with Ronan to begin with. That was a fact she couldn't stop beating herself against. Wondered if her reality would have changed if she didn't entertain the crush she had on her best friend's father.
She wanted to crawl into a whole, ashamed of this version of her. But with the loss of the baby and reassurance that her friend could leave again, came a new resolve.
There was nothing left between her and Ronan except for the brunt of her mistakes. And now that the baby is gone she could focus on her life. The friendship she had built all her life has been ruined by her. Nothing could justify her actions.
Now, she only has herself to think of. She wondered if she would truly have the strength to carry on and live with this large hole of emptiness in her heart.
As the seconds passed by, Elara's eyes blurred and she succumbed to the drowsiness fighting her consciousness.
Elara has been transferred to another ward by the healer, afraid of giving anything away that might arouse the alpha's suspicion.
He could only praise Elara for her sacrifice, he was awed by the measure she could take for her friend to live longer. Even if it means that she wouldn't be seen with her anymore. Whatever had happened between her and Alpha was completely a mistake and one she couldn't undo. He blamed the alcohol for her misery.
He had watched the two grow closer and stronger and never would one have thought that someday the bond between them would be severed.
Elara must have been through hell during the past months, he could imagine the guilt that must have eaten her up. The loneliness and the urge to restore a broken plate to its real self.
Life has become a shadow for her.
The healer wheeled himself out of the room after he brought the alpha in.
Ronan was still torn between the good news of finally getting a donor for his daughter and losing another child. It was as if the moon was telling him that he couldn't have his cake and eat it.
Sadness engulfed, making it a hard task for his lungs to agree with the oxygen penetrating his nose. Conflicted by the loss of his child. Ronan lowered himself on the wooden couch in the almost empty ward.
Watching Elara as she slept peacefully on the bunk bed with a soft snore. He was unsure about getting closer to touch her. Afraid his touch might awake her and aroused something forbidden in her.
He blamed himself for her misery, he was the selfish one who keeps collecting without giving. He must be delusional to think he could have both his wife and his daughter's best friend.
His face fell into his hands as reality eats him up. Not ready to confront the loss gnawing at his jaw.
"Alpha, you need to come with me," the healer's voice ended his thoughts before it could run further.
Lifting his head slowly to look at the healer who just barged in, sweating despite the air conditioning in this place.
"why? Is everything okay?" Ronan asked, panic surging into his voice as he rose up slowly.
"No...yeah! Everything is another control but we need you in the theater room. Selene requested for you to be present" the healer responded, still panting heavily like he was being chased by an invincible force.
"What kind of nonsense are you spitting out knowing fully well that it is not hygienic for me to be in there. You of all people know how badly we've been running around to get a donor. And that we have, you are still delaying matters?" Ronan bellowed, his frustration getting the better of him.
"It's the protocol alpha, moreover you would be sanitized before you enter. The patient has the choice to request the comfort of their favorite person at this stage. We have been doing this for years for memories sake" the healer explained further, locking eyes with the alpha to see if he was making sense to him.
Ronan's eyes was blank and straight, as if he would pin him to the ground. It doesn't seem like his words are getting through him.
"why is it talking so long to call him?" Mira asked as she forced the door opened.
Her eyes darted toward the small frame on the bed before it swept to the healer's side who was fidgeting with his fingers. Scratching his neck nervously under Mira's intense gaze, like she could see through his skull.
Mira let herself fully into the room, and it got smaller with all four of them in it. The air was suffocating and sharp, he feared they might be conserved into a negative energy which could harm Mira.
"huh, nothing. We are just about to leave when you come in" the healer gestured towards the door with his two hands spread out.
"oh good, please make sure everything is under control and the donor better not come back when this was over to make a silly request" Mira said, opening the door without glancing at Ronan's way.
The iciness in her eyes was as blazing as fire, the healer knew better than to delay for a second without following her.
Ronan shook his head and also left the room after watching at Elara for the last time. At this point, he knew upsetting his wife wasn't the best choice because the council would question his act.
It was a shame that he has lost some of his respect in the pack because of his selfishness.
