The cloud was already changing into a shade of orange when Elara aroused from her slumber. Not sunrise. Firelight. The kind that comes from burning tents, not the sun. Her joint protested.
The IV in her vein itched where it was inserted on her hand. Her groggy eyes kept opening and closing as it adjusted to the white bulb which illuminated the room.
Her mind was blank for a moment before the impact of what she did started wearing her out. A bitter sweet smile crossed her pale face. Everything must have gone well judging from the silence that filled the corridor. It was as though a new child was conceived and the loudest of breath could wake her.
Anxiety pricked her heart as she summoned the strength to sit up. Her back ached as she tried setting the pillow behind her to support her.
Her eyes traveled to the window, the sunset was the first thing that captured her heart. She found comfort in the fact that life had different shades of light. Sometimes it would be light. Dark. Orange which was the combination of light and darkness.
It was just there, not prompting you to make haste decisions that could make life more difficult for yourself . This shade of her life is comforting but lonely. Her heart aches badly when none of her favorite people are beside her in this trying time.
The door was pushed open quietly, the healer tiptoed in. Thinking Elara was still asleep, his heart almost jumped out of his chest when he saw her in a sitting position.
"Dammit woman, you scared me! You are awake so early, is everything okay?" the healer questioned, walking into the room with his hands crossed behind him.
"ye...ah I'm fine. Just woke up a while ago" Elara voice cracked, she flinched at the sound of it. Her throat was sore and painful. She wondered what could have caused it.
"oh that's impressive, do you feel pain anywhere?" the healer inquired, towering over her as she examined her body.
"My body hurts all over and my throat is sore but I feel much better than earlier" Elara answered under his unwavering check out.
"It is expected, the body pain is from the fall while your throat hurts from the impact of the pain. You will be fine before tomorrow don't worry" the healer assured her, covering her exposed feet very well.
"How was the surgery? Has it been done? No complications right?" Elara asked, her big brown eyes shone with hidden uncertainty in her voice even though she could only wish for the best.
The healer sighed, concentrating on reducing the speed of the IV. Each second delayed weighing heavily on Elara's heart.
"Please talk to me, I know I don't deserve to know but then I should. That's the least you could do for me since I can't visit her" Elara pleaded, gritting her shivering teeth.
The healer stared at her for some minutes before turning her way again, as if she was never there.
"The surgery was a success and she has been moved into another ward. That was the longest and strenuous surgery I had been involved with. The quietest of thought was as loud as a rushing bank, but then it's all good now" the healer narrated to her, leaving out the fact that he has to open the body of the alpha's daughter in his presence.
Cold water broke down on his face with each needle he thrust into the lady's flesh. It was as if everyone held their breath until the surgery was done.
"Thank God, I am indeed relieved, healer. Now my friend can live longer as planned" Elara spoke with an emptiness you could touch and feel at the same time.
"Come on, Elara, you made it possible. Never seen a friend that would put her life on the line for friendship sake. You are such a savior" the healer held Elara's hand, drawing soothing circles to calm the raging storm within her.
Elara nodded in agreement before her eyes darted to the sun which had changed into a darker shade of orange.
"Where will I go from here? Not even sure if my parents will be proud to have me again. I could still remember the disappointment that swallowed the light in their eyes anytime my name was mentioned. Now I'm the last person they want to see" Elara asked no one in particular, her head dropped in bitterness as tears blinded her sight, blurring her eyes.
"Hey, look at me. This isn't the end, you can stay here for as long as you want. Nobody uses this ward to begin with so you can have it all to yourself until you figure things out. You don't have to figure everything out in one day, all you need right now is to focus on recovering faster. I'm sure you will be fine as long as you are not too hard on yourself" the healer consoled her but not enough to hug her because he knew what boundaries not to cross with the alpha.
He sat down quietly listening to Elara's soft sobs which filled the room. His heart was torn on how best he could console her but could only give her tissue as she cries.
Elara cried until there were no more tears in her eyes. She laid down in silence, her body was beginning to burn because of how she worked herself out. She had gone through enough roller-coasters in a day.
The healer injected a little amount of sedative into her water so she could get the rest she needed. He watched over her for a few minutes before covering her body with the covers which had almost fallen off.
He sighs deeply, his shoulder slumped in defeat. Wondering how hard all this must have been on her during the entire time. Ensuring that everything was in place, he retreated his steps and walked out of the ward.
