Chapter 29 Choosing her Mother

809 Words
The dreadful day finally arrived, but faster than anticipated. It was too fast. She wouldn't be wrong if she said time had also conspired against her. Everything seemed to be supporting her mother's choice, making her the bad person. The pack ground was as busy as it used to be. There were different decorations lining the ceremonial arena. The materials were to match her mother's taste. Nothing was her doing. It was more like it was her mother's day. There were also ancient markings, carefully crafted and etched on different corners of the pack ground. Everything on display screamed tradition, and of course, her reality. Elara stood in front of the mirror, silent like someone that is mourning. She was already dressed, prepared, but empty inside. There was no sign to show that it was her big day. Get reflection was saying a different thing about her, a bride, a woman about to make the biggest decision of her life, which could either make her or mare her. But even as she stood there, her eyes told a different story. Her eyes were empty, blvey hollow, and she wondered if things would ever get better at any point of the new journey she was about embarking. "You look beautiful, Elara.' That was Liora, her mother. As Elara heard the voice behind her, she didn't make any effort to turn, even though she was aware her mother needed her attention. "Is that supposed to make me feel better? To make this cross easier to carry?" She asked quietly, her voice very distant. Liora moved closer to her, her hands on her shoulders. "No," she replied. "It's rather supposed to remind you that you've made the right decision to continue with this ceremony." Elara let out a soft laugh, but very bitter inside. "Right for who exactly?" Liora didn't answer her, at least immediately, and that little pause was enough answer for her. "For everyone," she said finally. Elara knew that everyone was never about her. She knew that her mother didn't include her in her thoughts while making the decision, and she couldn't help but wonder if she's truly her mother. As there were still there, a knock came at the door, interrupting their moment together. Before Liora could make an effort to check who was at the door, it flung open, a d Ronan entered. And instantly, the air surrounding them changed. Tension filled the room, everything electrical and dangerous. Liora narrowed her eyes slightly at him, surprised that the Alpha visited her. "What are you doing here, Alpha?" She asked, her mouth wide open in shock. Ronan didn't reply her, instead, his gaze was on Elara the whole time. "We need to talk, right now." He finally said. Liora stepped forward, ready to challenge the Alpha. "With due respect Alpha, there's nothing to discuss between us." "There are a lot to be discussed." He replied firmly. "Elara," he called her, his voice changing now to a soft tone. "Come either me immediately." Her heart stopped and started all over again a million times. Her wolf stirred restlessly inside her, urging her to follow him. But she didn't as much as take a step. "I'm not going anywhere with you," she replied calmly. Ronan stood there, his eyes almost betraying him. "This ceremony..." "I've made the decision to go through with it." Her words cut him off, very sharp and final. "No," Ronan said again. "That's not happening under my watch." Her voice dropped, very low, indicating she was done with the discussion. "I won't allow it to happen." Liora scoffed, but didn't do much to avoid Ronan getting angry with her. She knew that Ronan can stop the ceremony if he so washed. But what she doesn't understand is why he's negotiating it with Elara. To her, it could be because of the relationship between Selene and Elara. That maybe Selene begged her father to step in. Whatever way, she was happy that it was to get favor. As Liora scoffed, Ronan finally looked at her. "I can stop this ceremony, and no one can challenge me," Ronan continues, his Alpha aura now taking over. "As the Alpha of this pack, if I don't approve this union, it can't hold. This is me trying to follow a humble way to resolve everything." Elara's breath hitched, and she feared so much for her life. She knew that he was just being gentle with her. He could decide she was not fit to carry it on, sending his medical term to take over her health. Then, their eyes met again. Her eyes begged him to let her be, but he wasn't going to do that. "Don't do this to me, please," she pleaded. "Walk away from everything," he added instead. "I will be here to take care of the rest."
