Selene woke up from her slumber when she noticed that something was pinching her from under her cover. She wasn't strong enough to move her body at one goal but she tried to find what it was with her free hand.
It was a note folded into four parts. She unfolds it. The writing she could recognize even in thick darkness poured out. Her brow was slightly raised at what the content was about.
The paper fell on her chest suddenly, it dropped from her hand as if it was a sacred thing that burns.
She hates the feeling of loss that has settled on her upon opening the note. She ignored the note and placed it on the stand but it tugged at her heart. The memories she tried twice as hard to bury surfaced willingly.
Clearing her throat she reached for the paper, curiosity taking the better part of her.
Managing to focus her gaze on the wordings of the letter.
Dear bestie,
It is with a grievous heart I tabled these words down. I know I ruined what we shared like it was nothing. I pierced your heart with a dagger and thrust deeper where it hurts.
The news of your sickness tore my words apart. Day after day, I wondered how different it would have been, staying by your side. As we fought death together.
It kills me more to see what remains of that beauty that we so much worked on. I couldn't hold myself back. I had to do all I could to save you.
You were the one best thing that has ever happened to me. And I gambled with it. I did the test and the healer assured me that I was your match.
It felt like a dream so hard to believe and a miracle I hoped for. But then I was already pregnant with my sin which I had to let go.
The surgery was a success and I was happy to see you for the last time before I left.
I hope time will heal the pain I caused you. I hope you don't stop loving people like you used to without fear of who would betray you.
I have always loved you and always will.
Xoxo
Selene was crying softly until she finished the letter, clutching it to her heart like a grieving mother. Her cries filled the room, the sky darkened immediately and it began to pour. Swallowing her tears, the harder she cried the harder the rain fell.
It was as though the sky was listening to the intent of her heart and offered to weep on her behalf.
She kept the letter where it wouldn't be found, knowing that that was the last piece of her friend. She wondered if she was doing well at the moment.
The thought of how the past few weeks have been hard on Elara brought fresh tears to her eyes again. She was foolish. Foolish to fall for her father.
Selene shifted all the blame on her father, he was the one who took advantage of a crush. Elara was drunk at the time, he did it intentionally.
Was it to get back at mother? She wondered, her eyes were puffy and red from the long cry. Her strength seemed to have failed her.
Where would she be? Will she be fine on her own?
Those were the thoughts that pangs her heart. The only person that Elara had was her family whom she had also lost.
Maybe she was too angry at her friend to consider the hardship she too was facing at the moment. The rejection from the pack members, isolation from her loved ones. She couldn't remember if Elara had traveled out of the pack before. She wasn't keen on traveling despite the few times she persuaded her to come with her.
It was like asking her to do the impossible. Would things have turned out differently if her parents were divorced?
She wasn't ignorant of the way Elara gawked at her father anytime she came visiting. She practically adored the ground her father walked on. She could see it in her eyes because the silly girl fails miserably at hiding it.
Thinking of those memories made her heart feel lighter. It made her shoulder slumped in defeat.
Selene was lost in her thoughts until the healer’s voice drove her back.
“Princess, why are you crying? Do you have a headache, stomachache or feeling pain all over” the healer asked, touching her forehead for a temperature check.
“Elara is gone. She couldn't wait for me to see her for the last time before she left. She left me” Selene's voice was thick with concern mixed with loss.
The healer mouth formed ‘O’ at her words. He was taken aback at her cause of pain.
“I'm sure she doesn't want to bother you because she has caused enough pain to the both of you. Wherever she is, I'm sure she will be fine. She's that strong”. The healer consoled her and himself in return. He also wants to believe that she was fine too.
“did she complete her treatment after the miscarriage and transplant process? That must have been hard on her”. Selene asked, oblivious to how her words took the healer by surprise.
He bolted towards the door he left open and locked it from inside before returning to Selene side. Pulled out a stool and sat on it, ready to know how much Selene knows and if his life was in jeopardy already.
“How did you find out?” the healer's voice stated, his voice was low. Afraid of someone eavesdropping on their conversation.
“She left a letter of departure. Do you think she's fit to go a long distance?” Selene asked, ignoring the look on the healer's face.
“Have you told anyone aside from me? Nobody should find out who the donor is, especially the alpha. If not I'm done for. My life would be at stake” the healer pleaded, rubbing his hands together to plead his cause.
Selene stared at him in confusion but nodded her head in agreement.
