"Is it because of Elara that you killed a man like a hardened criminal? Did you for once think of what this might cause his parents? Do you even consider the feelings of others rather than your own?" Mira asked, each question weighing in the air as it tumbled out of her mouth.
Her face morphed into unspoken disappointment at his actions.
"You know better than to question my authority. Everyone's life is in my hands and I would do just what I want with it. The guard acted stupidly and he met a grievous death. Tell me how I did wrong here" Ronan adjusted his shoe as he answered Mira's questions.
"Do I even know you at all? What is this that has become of you?" Mira's voice breaks at the end, she crumbles on the bed when her leg fails her.
"Has my daughter woken up? I don't have time for all this drama. You are behaving like I killed a man for fun. You have changed too, I barely know you" Ronan retorted, glancing at himself for the last time before heading to the door.
"Don't mention anything about Elara if you still have any ounce of fatherhood in you. Selene doesn't need to be traumatized by you two after what she just survived" Mira warned, her fist clenched tightly to her side.
"Too bad, you can tell me what and what not to discuss with my daughter. Who knows, she might know where she's hiding in a time like this?" Ronan shrugged with a smile that made the remaining piece of Mira shattered.
"monster" Mira muttered under her breath as she curled up on the bed.
Her eyes were instantly wet with water, soaking the white satin cover. The softness of the cover did nothing to soothe her ragging heart.
Couldn't this happen for once? Like fully happy?
Life always finds a way to squeeze lime into her eyes each time she sees happiness from afar. Afar. That's how long it came near. It was as though she had given up her happiness for a title.
Ronan pushed the hospital door open, his eyes squinted to the red packages in the room. Wondering what they were met for but it was quickly replaced with a smile as he walked closer to his daughter.
Selene was strong enough to breathe by herself now. The smile plastered on her face was a huge one and Ronan reciprocated with a wide grin.
"Look at my girl! The first of my warriors. You have made a proud father. You fought and stayed. What more could I ask for today?" Ronan beamed, caressing her dry fingers while he stared admiringly into her soul.
Selene was smiling, still not strong enough to form words of her own. Her weak grip tightened against her father's hand in understanding of his kind words.
Tears shimmered in her eyes as she listened to her father, but she didn't let them fall.
Ronan finally found himself a stool to sit on. He didn't let go of her daughter. This was the side of him that she grew up knowing. It was just impossible for her to see him in a different light.
He was unapologetic about how much he loved her daughter. She met the world to him.
"Have you had breakfast? It's lunch time already, what would you have me request for your appetite" Ronan asked, rubbing her cold hands.
Selene's smile deepened at him. She adored her father. She never wanted to accept him into her life yet. Romans had been acting since she was born and he now believes his own lies.
"see how great you are loved. Everyone is praying for your quick recovery. I heard you got the best recovery gifts" Ronan paused, swallowing the rest of the gale in his voice.
Ronan sat quietly with Selene throughout the day until Mira came to replace him. She couldn't help but notice the tenseed air between her parents. They exchanged no words as they stood in the room. Each one immersed in their own thoughts.
Ronan kissed her forehead and cheek before striding out of the door. Selene's eyes lingered on the door long after her father had left.
"Are you okay? You don't look cheerful to me. Would you like to go outside? I can ask the healer if it is okay to wheel you around " Mira asked, staring at her daughter in uncertainty.
She was holding back the bitterness in her, maybe she was just as foolish to believe that he has changed. What she asked Selene was really out of the question knowing fully well that she can't even raise her head at the moment let alone sitting on a wheelchair.
Selene shook her head with a tight smile before closing her eyes slowly. She has had enough for today.
She did not react to Mira's touch. Her parents should have never been married if they knew they had nothing to offer her other than an unhealthy atmosphere. She hates it when she acts like she understands them but no.
"oh you are here already. Alpha just left my room so I decided to check on her improvement. She's lucky to have you two around her" the healer mumbled, standing at Selene's feet.
Selene opened her eyes closely, raising her head to see if her leg could reach between his legs. She really needs to kick him where it hurts so he knows how to speak the truth.
"What can we do? She's everything her father and I have to ourselves. It will be cruel on our path to leave her alone" Mira responded with a voice laced with admiration but for who? Her husband? I doubt it!
"Please don't let her do too much, you need a slow recovery and patience. She's here with us now and in a couple of days, I believe that she will start eating" the healer held her feet, to know the temperature. He nodded slightly and waved Selene goodbye.
