"Give it back you dummy, I won't forgive you if it spoils," Elara screamed, sticking out a stick to get her slippers from Rocky's mouth.
"If you don't stop hallucinating, this cold water will do. It's daybreak and everyone is busy with their daily routine. You are here daydreaming" Briel's cold voice breaks through Elara's dream.
The ray of light pouring in from the window, blinded her sight. Briel deliberately pulled the curtain aside.
Elara yawned sleepily, stretching and rubbing her eyes. It took her a few seconds to adjust to the brightness of the room.
"Where's Ben?" Elara asked, sitting straight with her legs crossed on the couch.
"If he hadn't stopped me from waking you up, you would probably know where he is right now" Briel hissed, combing Rocky fur with his fingers.
"Are you always angry? Aren't you afraid you might develop high blood pressure one day. Don't you want to age like Ben?" Elara asked with a furrowed brow, it's high time she teaches the young man to prioritize his health.
"Get your ass into the restaurant in the next couple of minutes. You wouldn't like it if I came back for you" Briel instructed and walked towards the door.
"And if I don't? Ben accepted me here, not you, so don't think you can go about throwing orders at me" Elara muttered, glaring at the back of his head.
Briel stopped abruptly, turning around slowly until his eyes rested on Elara's face. His face was blank, no expression to indicate what he was thinking.
Elara averted her gaze, scratching her messy hair. Messy hair?
She rushed to the mirror resting against the wall at the left side of the room. Her hands flew to her mouth at the recognition of the person standing before the mirror. Her face lit up in embarrassment. She had forgotten to wear her hair bun yesterday, no wonder Briel was staring at her like someone who was out of her element.
"You don't have to worry. Nobody here finds you attractive, you can do your thing with no worries" Briel's voice was heavy with hypocrisy. It was an odd warmth that Elara knew better than to mistake for care.
"You think? It is my hair that has the problem , not me. At least I don't act like an unnecessary jerk" Elara retorted, sticking her tongue out at him.
Briel picked the small box laying by the side of the door and threw it her way. It barely missed her if she wasn't quick to dodge it.
"Maybe you should flex more, don't you think? Your body is too heavy for you" Elara taunted, grabbed her bag and escaped into one of the rooms to have a quick bath.
"Breakfast is on the counter, that's if you want" Briel chuckled, shaking his head as he pushed the heavy glassy door.
He knew Ben would not approve of waking a visitor in the middle of her sleep but he couldn't care less. She should earn her keep while staying with them or better still end up on the street.
He hastened his steps and walked back into the kitchen. The aroma of the usual burger with sauce wafted into his nose. No matter how many he ate in a day, he just can't seem to get enough of it.
The restaurant is always full at the early hour of the day. Especially with people going to work without having time to prepare breakfast. This was like their second home. The ladies came so they would see his face. That added to his cockiness.
It wasn't until thirty minutes later that Elara appeared at the back door. Neatly dressed, in a white shirt and a short black skirt which hang so perfectly on her body. Her hair was pulled into a neat ponytail with a few strands falling off.
Briel's eyes were fixed on her dreamy once. She was totally different from what he saw earlier. She appeared fresh from heaven.
"You look so beautiful, look at you! I could hardly recognize you" Ben beamed with joy when he followed Briel's line of vision. The young man had dropped what he was doing, entertaining himself with his house mate.
"Thank you, I didn't do much because I knew I would be busy here. Not planning on intimidating the customers" Elara waved her head, standing on her toes in excitement.
"You should have thought of that instead of spending hours to dress" Briel smirked, arranging a customer order inside the white tray.
"hours? I did everything within thirty minutes. You gave such an order. You threatened to throw me out on the street where I belonged" Elara accused him in a low tone so she wouldn't attract the attention of those having a quiet breakfast.
Briel's eyes widened in shock. What was she trying to do? He didn't say such?
The loud thud on his back which was replaced by pain shot through his back. Ben hit him with his walking stick which was resting against the cabinet.
"Seriously! You can't believe the words of a stranger over your own grandson. I didn't threaten to throw her out" Briel stated, anger brewing within him at the thought of Elara's lie.
Elara pouted her mouth, stomping her feet against the marble floor.
"I have no reason to lie against you. Look at this, he threw a box at me and I barely missed it. It will turn to a bruise if not taken care off" Elara continued, showing Ben where the box had hit her in the morning. Even though it was small, she still used it against me.
Briel was beyond stunned. His mouth dropped in confusion as to why Elara would ratted him out over what they were both guilty of. She didn't hold back on her words against him either.
He wouldn't let go of this false charge.
"Well, I apologize for my wrong doings and promised to treat you better in the future. If we are still leaving together" Briel added, his lips parted into a scoff.
