Chapter 10 Pack Pressure

1030 Words
There were heart breaking whispers, the kind that can make a sane person lose focus. Everywhere Elara turned, she would hear their voices before seeing their faces. And once she gets close, conversations pause, the weight of many eyes trailing after every of her steps. Her wolf wasn't left out too, very sensitive to her surrounding. The curiosity was there, the disapproval from everyone around her. But she had no option, but to keep living. She tightened her grips on the few books she was holding, as she calmly walked through the campus courtyard, but not without her head slightly bent in shame, pretending not to overhear them, or notice their presence. "... that's her, she's coming." "I heard she's pregnant." "And the pup belongs to Jax, right?" "After everything he did on humiliating her? That's quite embarrassing..." But Elara didn't turn. She didn't even show any sign that they were talking about her. Her heart continued to pound uncontrollably, but she didn't stop. If she make the mistake of spending just a second more, she might end up breaking down completely. Elara wanted to run, to be far away from everything and everyone, but there was nowhere to run to. By the time she finally got to her lecture hall, she realized that the whispers had already gone ahead of her into tbd classroom. They always look for a way to make her weak, to bring her down. Everywhere was like a market place, but the moment she stepped in, the noise died down, more like someone with a communicable disease just entered. Then, all of a sudden, the murmurs resumed again. Starting off as a low, but sharp and cutting deep in her chest. While all these was happening, Elara slowly moved to her usual seat which was located at the back, her movement too slow that she was almost invisible. Well, the goal was to stay invisible, and she was doing a great job at that. But getting to school today, invisiblity wasn't an option. Not when every eyes in the lecture hall were all on her. Then, a girl in the front row, leaned closer to a friend, not even decent enough to lower her voice. "I thought she really had standards, turns out they are all the same." "I guess not," the friend replied with a shrug. This made Elara's fingers to tighten on her pen, her wolf growling softly inside her. But in all of this, she stayed still. Because, if she ever open her mouth to defend herself, it would worsen the situation. "Hey," she heard a soft voice call her, just beside her. Elara didn't care to look up at first, thinking it was one of her classmates, that are looking for a way to increase her torment. "I'm fine," she replied, still not looking up. Well, it was Selene. "I didn't ask if you were fine." That made Elara look up, as she immediately recognized it was her best friend. She didn't know it had eaten deep into her, to the point it took her time to recognize her best friend's voice. Selene's eyes wandered around the room, briefly scanning their environment, before they finally returned to her. "They are still talking." She said calmly. "I know about that." "You shouldn't have to deal with such toxicity in the first place." That made Elara to laugh, a humorless and tight laugh."but I am already going through such." And she meant every word of it, which was the problem. Selene was beside her, trusting and defending her like they were blood sisters. While she repay her back with evil. Then, the pain became very unbearable, while everyone turned their back on her. By lunchtime, instead of getting better, it became worse. The cafeteria has always been noisy, but it increased today. The moment Elara and Selene walked in, the atmosphere changed, as alm eyes turned to their direction. "Let's just take any of the tables," Selene muttered, guiding her toward one of the tables. But, before they could make it to sit down... "Well, well..." Elara froze, as they were about to start just when she was finally getting a peaceful day. That voice, she knew the owner without even seeing the face. Kira. Of course, it has to be her. Jax's best friend and secret lover. She turned, slowly like a speed fast would curse harm to her health. Kira was standing a few inches away, a mocking smile plastered all over his face. A few others had started gathering, watching her eagerly. "Look who decided to grace her with her shameless face," Kira started. Selene immediately stepped in between them, ready to defend Elara with everything in her. "Not today of all days, Kira," Selene said. Kira raised a brow, more like she was offended. "Oh? You're still her pauper? Defending her?" She asked, shaking her head in disappointment. "With everything she did, you are still bent on associating yourself with her likes?" Selene clenched her fist, ready to punch her, but she knew better. "Elara isn't the villian here. She didn't do anything wrong." Kira let out a laugh. Very dry and humorless. "Isn't she always right in your eyes? She said, as she glared at both of them. "How do you justify sleeping with your cheating ex...and going as far as getting pregnant for him, then, turning the table around to play the victim?" Each word that came out of her mouth was like a slap on her cheeks. "I'm not pretending," Elara managed to say. This earned a smirk from Kira, as she was ready to provoke Elara into stepping into wrestling field with her, and maybe. She might get the opportunity she has always wanted to get ride of the baby. That would be dream come true, if she could trigger her, or weaken her emotionally and psychologically, bringing in health condition that might put her and the baby at risk. Anything to have Jax all to herself. "Oh, really? Because, from where I'm standing, all I could see us you trapping him." That got Selene angry, as she sprang to her feet. "Watch your mouth!"
