"Walk away from everything," he added instead. "I will be here to take care of the rest."
She wanted to say yes to him so badly. Wanted to run away with him, then, she remembered the look on Selene's face.
What would happen to her mother if she tries that? Will the truth come out? What will it destroy at last? Will the pack ever take her in again?
Thinking about all that, she shook her head slowly.
"I can't do that."
Ronan didn't realize when he took a step closer to her, trying to convince her. "Yes, you can do that."
"No," she said again, this time stronger than before.
"I won't embark on such journey "
His expression changed immediately, as he tried to maintain a reasonable distance between them to avoid suspense.
"Why can't you?" He demanded to know.
Tears instantly filled her eyes, too much to be controlled. "That's because this is way bigger than me," she whispered. "It's not as small as you see it. You might be the Alpha, and can do anything without being questioned, but not so with me. And worse still, I will still drag my family into the mess."
Ronan's voice dropped, his tone changing to a soft one. "Don't lie to yourself just to justify your decision."
"I'm not lying to anyone," she replied, but her voice was shaking as she said that.
"I'm only doing what is right to protect everyone," she continued.
"Protect everyone from what exactly?"
Her lips parted to talk, but she couldn't say anything. She couldn't tell him the truth, because that would end up destroying his daughter, her best friend. If for anything, Selene deserves the best, and not the dark secret awaiting explosion.
"From everything happening around us," she said instead.
Ronan ran a frustrated hand through his rough hair, already contemplating stopping the ceremony by force. If she wouldn't corporate with him, it would be best she uses his Alpha power to stop it. But then again, will she ever forgive him?
"You think this method of yours will ever fix things?" He asked.
"This isn't going to protect anyone, trust me on this. It would only bring an end result, that would make things worse "
"Maybe not to your taste," she admitted.
"But at least, it would buy me time, and also not destroy things."
"You're seriously choosing to embark on this journey..., over us?" He said slowly.
Elara's heart shattered a million times, just hearing him talk in such shattered tone.
"There was never us to start with." She whispered, forcing the words out of her mouth.
The lie hurt more than the truth that was forced to stay silent. Ronan stood there, staring hard at her, longing for her, but she was far off from him. Her mind was made up, and there was nothing he could do about it.
At this point, his shoulders dropped slightly, not in defeat, but giving her the right to make her choiced.
"If you ever walk out there," he started calmly, "there will be no going back."
Elara nodded calmly, her mind all made up.
"I know about that."
Ronan exhaled slowly, stopping himself from doing the last thing in his mind.
"You're asking me to watch you walk into trouble, and destroy yourself?"
Tears slipped down her cheeks, messing up her make up.
"I'm only asking you to give me the chance to make my own decision."
Ronan nodded once. Though it was painful, he was ready to let her go. To let her make her mistakes, and maybe learn from them. He didn't want to enforce anything on her, even though his wolf was stretching to claim her forcefully.
"Then, I won't do anything to hinder the success of the ceremony. I won't stop you." He said calmly.
At this point, Liora walked closer to them, as she noticed they were almost done with their discussion, and time was no longer on their sides.
The moment Ronan turned and walked away, Liora walked over to her, place a hand on her shoulders.
"Did he try to stop you for Selene's sake?"
"Yes, but I rejected. He said Selene would cut off ties with me if I go ahead with the ceremony, but I still insisted."
"That's a great choice, you will always get other friends in the future."
Elara nodded calmly, nervous on the amount of lies she had shred just because of a single lie.
"Get ready immediately," she continued. "It is time."
