The entire pack became silent the moment, Elara, the awaited bride stepped out. Kira was by the side, watching her. That was the exact position she had dreamed to occupy, and now, from nowhere, Elara was about taking it.
"That would never happen." She muttered under her breath.
A mere look at Elara, one could see she was detached, distant, like it wasn't he say. At the altar, Jax stood waiting, confident and all smiles.
He was certain, possessive, and patiently anticipating the official vow exchange between them. His countenance was completely different from that of Elara.
"Finally," he muttered, more to himself as she approached. "Thought you had run away."
Elara stood before him, saying nothing. She couldn't bring herself to talk. The elder stepped forward, his voice steady and commanding.
"Today, we gather here to bear witness to the sacred mate bond between.."
"Elara Voss and Jax Wilder," the crowd cheered happily, more than the celebratants.
Selene was standing not too far, watching everything unfold. Alpha Ronan also stood at one far end, still, saying nothing. But his eyes were saying more than enough, as he stared at Elara...
"Do you, Elara Voss, take..."
"Wait."
That single word was heavier than all the words said from the beginning of the ceremony.
All heads turned to the direction of the voice, and Kira stepped forward, completely unbothered.
This made Jax to frown, wondering what she had up her sleeve this time.
"Kira, what are you doing?"
Kira simply smiled, but it didn't reach her teeth.
"I'm just trying my best to stop a mistake from happening."
Immediately, murmuring erupted through out the gathering, everyone around ready to hear from her.
"Kira, this isn't the right time to..."one of the elders tried pointing out to her.
"Oh, I think it's just the perfect time to carry on this assignment." Kira replied smoothly, confident in herself.
Selene frowned, and immediately stepped forward to help out. Elara might have hurt her by shutting her out. She might also not be in support of the mating ceremony, but she couldn't stand by, and watch Kira spoil her friend's day with jealousy.
"Kira, stop this nonsense."
Kira smiled in seeing her, earger to share the news that no one requested for.
"You might want to hear what I have to say." Kira told her all smiles.
"I don't." Selene snapped.
Kira's smile widened, clearly enjoying the attention she was getting.
"Then, I will go ahead and say it anyway. Those interested can pick one or two lessons from it."
Then, she turned, facing the entire pack. All attempts to calm her down failed, do they decided to allow her speak.
"This bond," she started. "Is built only on lies."
Everyone turned their attention to her, waiting for more. Jax scoffed, not ready to buy her story.
"What nonsense are you spilling from you mouth?"
Kira glanced at his direction, then, her eyes moved to Elara.
"Tell them everything," she told her softly. Instantly, Elara's heart started hammering, her throat drying up.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Elara managed to whisper.
"Of course, you will never agree to knowing."
Kira laughed lightly. She quickly reached out into her clutch, and pulled out a bracelet. Selene's eyes widened, as everyone waited to know what connection the bracelet has with the ceremony.
"That belongs to Elara." Selene said
"Yes. It is hers" Kira continued.
"And guess where it was found?"
Everywhere became quiet, no one saying nothing, as expectations filled the air. Kira's gaze slowly landed on Alpha Ronan.
"In Alpha Ronan's room."
The whole world stopped. Selene blinked, trying to process what she heard.
"No...that doesn't have any meaning. That's a baseless accusation."
'It doesn't have any meaning?" Kira asked softly.
By now, Ronan was just seating, saying nothing. Then, Selene continued. "Elara visited the house so many times. Seeing a bracelet that belongs to her in our house doesn't mean anything."
"I totally agree with you." She paused. Then, she continued. "That's why I didn't stop my investigation there."
Her words seemed to carry weight, like she knew exactly what she was talking about. This made Jax to turn to her, fully interested in her story.
"What are you trying to prove?"
"Simple. That your precious bride...the one you're about to be mated to...was never yours to start with."
That earned gasps from the crowd, everyone murmuring.
"Enough!" Liora, Elara's mother snapped. "This silly act of yours is disgraceful!"
Kira raised a brow, ready to challenge anyone that would try to stop her. "Is it? Or is it just inconvenient for your family reputation?"
She turned to her left, and clapped once. "Come in."
The crowd parted involuntarily, as everyone anticipated what was coming up next.
A tall and elegant woman stepped forward.
Her eyes were sharp, piecing and fierce. Her lips curved slyly, and her face sculptured like something coming out of a museum.
At this point, Alpha Ronan froze. All through the ceremony, he had said nothing, but the moment the woman stepped forward, he became restless.
"Lyra..." He said under his breath. It was obvious they both had a history today from the way they both stared at each other. At this point, Mira's eyes darkened. She didn't know what to believe anymore, or how to react to the strange woman's arrival.
"You have some nerve showing up here."
Lyra smirked, matching his energy. "I could say the same to you."
Selene stared between them, completely lost, so was everyone around, except Kira.
"Who is she?" Mira asked, her voice cold as ice.
