"I'm just dealing with a lot lately." Elara said quietly. Selene nodded like she even understood or can relate to what she was saying. "I'm aware of that, but you're not letting me help you."
Elara let out a shaky breath, before dropping the bomb. "I don't need anyone's help!"
That hurt so badly, that tears almost gushed out of Selene's eyes. She could not believe that there could be a point in life where Elara would consider her a stranger, and not need her help.
"Since when did that start?" Selene asked softly, trying her best to hide the hurt.
Elara didn't respond. She obviously had no answer to give. Or maybe, she had, but it wasn't favorable, and couldn't bring herself to say it to her. Ever since she spent a night with her father, she hadn't been herself. Everything between them also started changing.
"You've always told me everything, since we became more than friends. Since we turned sisters." Selene started. "Even down to your embarrassing moments, we never withheld any detail. Even the painful ones, the ones we couldn't tell anyone else, we told ourselves." Elara's eyes burned as selene narrated their rare kind of friendship journey.
"I know."
"So, why did things change now?"
That question again, the one she has been avoiding.
The answer was simple, but very hard to say. Elara opened her mouth to talk, but closed it. She couldn't bring herself to saying a word. Her wolf urged her to talk, to tell her, but she did what she had always been doing; supress het.
"That's because..." She started. Selene leaned closer, waiting and hoping she would finally talk, trusting their friendship would be reignited, but it was like she would wait forever.
".. because, it won't change anything," Elara replied, her voice very soft. Selene stared at her, feeling cheated, that Elara was taking her for granted.
"It would definitely change everything for me, if only you would open up," Selene said, encouraging to trust her secretsvwith her.
"You don't have to go through this alone, carrying burden way bigger than you " she said.
This made Elara to laugh weakly, but there was no humor in that little laugh.
"But I am already carrying it."
That got Selene angry, because she was tired of caring for someone who obviously doesn't care if she's hurt or not. Who doesn't trust her, or their years of friendship to tell her certain things happening in her life.
"You don't trust me " Selene said gently.
This made Elara to snap her head to her direction, trying to cover up.
"That's not true."
But Selene wasn't ready to hear them anymore.
"I don't have any idea of what's going on with you," she said. "But I would like to let you know this... whatever it is, it's gradually changing you."
"I'm still me." Elara replied, feeling the pain of losing her friend because of one wild night.
"No." She replied sharply. "Not completely you anymore."
That hurt her more than it should have, and that's because, Elara knew the truth wasn't far from all she said. Selene walked over to the window side, her arms crossed, not in defensive mood, but just protecting herself, her sanity.
"I miss you so badly. The you that I used to know."she admitted truthfully.
"I'm here here, before you. The Elara that you've known all your life " Elara whispered. Selene didn't care to turn, because she knew what she would be getting.
"You're obviously not the same person," she replied. She still didn't turn, didn't care to say much. She had a lot in her head, many questions that needed answers, which Elara was in the best position to answer. But she knew better than to ask, because she would end up saying nothing.
Elara suddenly stood up, as the weight of everything happening was gradually being played on her shoulders. "I don't know the exact way to fix this." She admitted honestly.
Selene closed her eyes briefly, resisting the urge to turn and hug her friend. She so much needed that their friendship bond. To be each other's eyes, ears, and everything.
"Then, you should consider starting with being honest." She said.
Elara froze, standing still, because she knew Selene was asking for the impossible. Or better still, her death sentence.
Her heart started pounding non stop, her wolf howling inside her, but she said nothing. She has locked her truth deep inside her, and even though it screamed every day to be let free, she didn't care. She still had it hostage inside her, saying nothing to Selene.
Selene nodded to herself, a silent reminder that she was an outsider, a complete stranger to her. It was a quiet resigned movement, as she accepted her new position.
"Okay," she said softly. She wasn't angry, didn't shout, she was just tired of baby sitter an adult.
"I won't waste time pushing you," she continued. "Not anymore."
Elara felt the pain, but she still maintained her stand.
"What does that statement mean?"
Selene finally turned to face her, still maintaining a calm expression, but maintained her distance.
"It simply means... anytime you're ready to talk, I will gladly listen."
Then, she paused, gathering her words.
"I'm done chasing answers from you, which you obviously won't release to me "
"Selene..." Elara called, as her throat burned to say something. But Selene only gave her a sad smile, walked past her, and was gone.
Elara stood there, in the middle of the room, all alone. At this point, it dawned on her that she wasn't just losing her life, but she was also about losing Selene, the only person that understands and supports her in everything.
She knew, there was no lie that could fix what had been destroyed, only the truth can. But the question remains; will the truth save her, or worsen everything? Will she ever find peace again?
