Chapter Five
Alexia’s POV
I woke up tired as the rays of sunlight sipped through the window and shined brightly at me.
I stretched tiredly. This is the first time I’ve slept this long and comfortably. I rolled on the bed tiredly.
“Clara.” I called out a little bit.
I got up and sat on the bed looking around but no sign of Clara.
“Clara.” I called a bit loud while looking around.
I heard quivering sounds and little muffles and a light cough.
I got up immediately and walked towards the direction the sound came from. It was from the bathroom I saw little blood stains on the ground I got scared immediately and opened up the door.
“Clara!” I half screamed as I saw her coughing out blood lightly.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her as I squatted to her level.
“My…..,cough cough.” She coughed out blood again.
“My heart.” She managed to say while breathing heavily.
Her blood had some white substance in it.
“Let’s get you to the hospital.” I said and immediately started getting her to clean up her bloody mouth and carried her on my back as I hurriedly rushed out of the apartment to find a taxi.
It was just a few minutes down and it felt like hours as I wasn’t getting any taxi.
Finally a car offered to help, the car didn’t seem like a taxi but I was in haste to think of it.
I got Clara in first and then I got in.
“Good day sir.” Please, I'm going to the federal hospital. I said and he simply nodded like I gave him an order and started driving.
The ride was a silent one with only the constant coughs from Clara coming up every now and then while my head always turned to the back every minute to check on her.
We finally arrived at the hospital and the nurses rushed to us and took her to the emergency ward.
After half an hour the doctor came out and I was busy pacing around praying she was okay.
“Miss, can I see you.” He said to me and I nodded in agreement and followed him to his office.
“Your friend has a heart disease, she’s been living with it for years, she has had this breakdown so many time and I’m afraid she may not make it out on this one.” He explained.
I knew Clara had a medical condition which she took treatment for every month, she never for once mentioned it to me to be a heart failure or was I just too busy working to see? Was I such a nonchalant friend?
I felt bad, and I felt it was my fault, we were both orphans who looked out for each other and I just let her down by being too busy. I remembered she dropped out to raise money so I could go to school so when I get a job I could fend for both of us. My eyes were getting teary already.
“Can’t we do anything to help her, she’s my best friend doctor I can’t let her die, she’s my sister the only person I have.” I said as I broke down in tears . I couldn't pretend or hold it on any longer.
“Madam, it’s a heart disease not the end of the world, we could perform a surgical treatment for her, doing a heart transfer.” He said.
“Then what are you waiting for? Go ahead and perform the surgery.” I said in haste.
“You’ll have to make a deposit of five thousand dollars for a start and then we can perform the surgery.” He said.
My eyes widened the moment he mentioned the amount, my whole savings wasn’t even up to two thousand dollars.
“That’s…That's so much money sir, can’t I pay two thousand dollars?” I asked with the tears still rolling down my eyes.
“Rules are rules, five thousand and then I’ll begin the surgery, and please be fast she doesn’t have much time. The doctor said,
My heart aches so bad, I wanted to scream but my voice was gone, my tears dried up and my face was so lame.
I got up and walked to her ward and she was on oxygen.
“I’ll go find the money Clara just hang on a little.” I whispered even though she couldn’t hear me as I was standing outside.
I walked out and the man that drove me here was standing out waiting for me, I thought he was waiting to get paid. I looked at the car, it seemed pretty expensive and I knew his charges would be high.
“I don’t have any money on me sir.” I said calmly while sniffing my tears.
“Don’t worry ma’am, you’re not to pay, that's the order.” He said.
Immediately he called me ma'am. I knew something was wrong but my head was too packed for another thought so I just walked away while he called me and I ignored.
Immediately I got outside the gate I started running knowing he may follow me back so I ran as fast as I could and changed route to my house.
After running for a long time I stopped and started walking slowly and started to think about how to raise money for Clara’s surgery.
It started to rain and I couldn’t help but cry, it was like the rain was a soothing comfort that washed my tears. I got home and found the car that gave me a lift with Clara earlier.
“Ma’am” he called.
“You’re still here? I thought I asked you to leave me alone!” I yelled a him.
I ran to the side in rage and picked up stones throwing it to his car, destroying his windscreen.
“Stay away from me.” I said before running away and got inside my apartment.
Not quite long as I was sobbing a knock came on the door.
I walked up to it and opened up the door.
“I thought I told you to stay away…..” my words were cut short as i remember the face standing in front of me, it was the guy at the club I had insulted.
“Hola.” He said as before I could respond he walked in.
Threw a document on the table and head fined me to check it out.
I walked over to the table and checked it out. Maybe he was the one that bought our company and he has bought this place too and wants to throw me out. I mean what worse can happen.
I read the document which talked about a contract marriage of 1 year and my profit was seventy thousand dollars and a company of my own and other landed properties.
I looked at him and looked at the document then shoved it to him.
“I’m not interested.” I said while staring daggers at him.
“Okay.” He simply said and was about walking out before flinging an address note to me.
“That’s my address when you reconsider.” He said and walked out.
“Proud bastard.” I cursed under my breath.
Just then I remembered Clara again.
“Ohh no Clara.” I gasped.
I should have accepted the offer. I quickly picked the address and boarded a taxi to the address.
I got there in a few minutes and the place was looking pretty big and beautiful with the dark bright lights.
The gate opened like it knew I was coming.
I walked straight into the big building which was dark.
“Hello, strange weird looking dude.” I called out loud.
“What?” He answered and I freaked out as he scared me and then the lights turned on.
“I’ll sign the contract.” I said even though I knew I didn’t want to.
“But first, you’ll have to pay for my best friend's medical surgery.” I said.
“Deal.” He replied.
If this was what I had to do for Clara, I will do it, it’s just a year.
Just then I felt his hands wrapped around my waist from behind as he whispered.
“You can stay for the night.”
My whole body froze, that was some good effect he had on me but I resisted and pushed him away and then walked out. I was going to come back tomorrow.
