Connell halted as my voice reached his ears, quickly turning around. However, before I could utter a word to him, my mother's voice cut me off.
"Look, Leela has arrived! We were just discussing you," Mother announced. I peered over Connell's shoulder to see my mother standing next to Connell's mother. Miss Adele Everston, This family is renowned in our town, and their word is law, not out of respect, but fear.
The Everstons are the most enigmatic individuals I’ve ever encountered. There’s something about them that unsettles me. Perhaps it’s because they indirectly dictate my life by influencing my mother to control me.
Well, I never had a great relationship with my mother, to begin with, but ever since she began working for Everton's our lives have taken the worst turn. When we relocated to Virginia, we were devoid of resources. We had no money, and my mother had to work double shifts to meet our needs. Despite the challenging circumstances, the Everstons were the only ones who offered assistance. They provided my mother with a job and us with a place to live. However, their true nature is hidden behind a facade.
The Everston family, in reality, is a force to be reckoned with. They are like a threatening cloud that constantly hovers over me, casting a shadow of fear and manipulation. Their influence is a constant reminder of the control they exert over our lives.
"Leela, why are you standing over there? Come and meet Adele," my mother called out, snapping me out of my reverie. I nodded and made my way past Connell to greet his mother.
As I approached, I noticed Adele's hand gently touching my face, her fingers tracing my cheekbone in a seemingly innocent gesture. Yet, her smile didn't reach her eyes. It was a cold, calculated smile that sent a shiver down my spine.
" I remember the day when I first saw you. You were just a child but now, look at you! You've grown into a beautiful lady." She says.
I didn't like the way she was looking at me and trying to change the conversation.
"Miss Adele, what a pleasant surprise! How have you been?" I inquired, trying to keep my voice steady despite the unsettling energy radiating from her.
"I'm doing well. I believe your mother might have forgotten to mention something to you," she replied, her voice as smooth as silk but with an underlying hint of malice that was hard to ignore. I turned to look at my mother, who confessed, "Oh, I apologize for the oversight. I had invited Miss Adele to join us for dinner." The news did nothing to alleviate the sense of unease that had settled over me. Adele's presence, her touch, her smile, and the negative energy she exuded were all too palpable. It was going to be a long dinner. Mother guided Miss Adele to the dining room.
Before, we could follow them to the dining room. I stopped Connell by putting my hand on his shoulder. He turned his face towards me.
" What are you trying to prove?" I asked him.
A smirk appeared on his face and he said," Were you afraid? I thought, you weren't afraid of me. Next time, think before you open your pretty mouth, Curly Bell." he removed my hand from his shoulder and walked inside the dining room, leaving me utterly hopeless.
The next thing I knew, I found myself seated at the dining table, the rich aroma of the meal wafting through the air. The clinking of cutlery against the fine china was the only sound that dared to break the silence.
Across from me, Connell was seated, his gaze unwavering. His eyes, a deep shade of black, were fixed on me as if trying to warn me about what he could do to me. The tension between us was palpable, like a bubble ready to burst at the slightest provocation.
The candlelight flickered, casting long shadows that danced on the walls, adding an eerie ambiance to the room. Every tick of the clock seemed to echo in the silence, amplifying the sense of unease. The silverware felt cold in my hands, and I could feel the weight of Connell's gaze, heavy and inescapable.
I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. The food looked delicious, but I could barely taste it. My mind was elsewhere, tangled in the web of tension that had ensnared the room.
Connell cleared his throat and said," So, Leela, what are you planning to do after high school? Which college are you planning to go to?"
This raises the eyebrows of my Mother. My mother would never allow me to leave this town to continue my studies but yet I have done something without her knowledge. Connell knows about it.
The mere mention of college made my heart race. I could feel the blood draining from my face, replaced by a cold dread. I was scared, not of the question, but of what it implied. Was he going to tell my mother?
I choked on the prawn, the surprise and fear catching in my throat. As I coughed, struggling to regain my composure, my mother quickly offered me a glass of water. I took a sip, the cool liquid doing little to quell the panic rising within me.
“Are you alright?” Connell asked, his voice laced with concern. Or was it curiosity?
“Yeah, I’m fine. Thank you for asking,” I managed to say, wiping my mouth with a napkin. But his smirk told me he wasn’t fooled. It was a knowing smile, one that held a secret. A secret that could turn my world upside down.
“Are you okay, Leela?” Adele’s voice cut through my thoughts, pulling me back to the present. I nodded, trying to appear calm. But inside, I was anything but calm. And Connell, with his piercing gaze and maddening smirk, was the storm that threatened to break it.
Suddenly, my mobile screen lit up. Taking my mobile from the table, I saw a text from my friend Haley. I opened the message on my mobile.
My eyes bulged out of their sockets when I read the text…
