"What is the matter? Leela, you are looking worried," Connell said while looking at me. And I jumped from my seat. " I-I... I apologize, but I just remember... I have a test tomorrow at school and I need to study. Please excuse me, Miss Adele. I hope you won't mind," I announced. But Connell was quick to reply, " Which test? I didn't know about any test." He is doing his best to raise suspicion of me. " Umm,... You don't know about this test because you were busy in your football practice and if you give me permission to leave, I would like to go and study for the test." I can see Connell doesn't look convinced by my answer. He is a clever and hard-to-make fool, but before he could raise another question. Miss Adele interrupted. " Of course, dear," She says, raising her wine glass high and continuing, " Focus on your studies, and we are also leaving." I nodded and pasted a fake smile on my face and said, " Good night, everybody." I quickly left the dining room, making my way straight to Candice's room, thinking about Candice. She must be sleeping... I checked her two hours ago. She wasn't feeling good and wanted to take a rest... this can't be real. But as I entered her room, I found it empty. A sense of urgency gripped me as I began to search for her. I checked the closet, her usual hiding spot when she wanted to be alone, but it was empty. A quick glance in the bathroom confirmed she wasn't there either. " Candice! Where are you? This isn't funny." I called her, but there was complete silence. But then, I noticed it - the window. It was slightly ajar, the curtains fluttering in the gentle breeze. A sense of realization dawned on me. Candice had snuck out. The stubborn, rebellious Candice had done it again. I glanced at my mobile screen and read Haley's message. "Hey, Leela, I am so sorry for disturbing you, but just need to confirm what Candice is doing at Brooklyn's Party. I thought you guys weren't coming to the party. Haley ~ " " Damnit! I told her that she wasn't allowed to Brooklyn's Party. Mother never allowed us to go out at night, but since when she listened to me. But it's not the right time to complain. I need to do something before Mother finds out she is missing," I thought, and tried to think, what do I do? My eyes travel on the ajar window and an idea pops up in my head. I texted back Haley to keep an eye on Candice, and I am coming to pick her up. I began stacking up some pillows on the bed to make it look like she was sleeping. If a mother ever comes to check up on her, she'll find her in bed. Next, I called for a cab to pick me up. I open the side window of the room carefully and pass one leg before another through the other side. Once, I made it out of the room. I attentively walked in front of the house. And I saw my cab was waiting for me, but before I could move, I saw the front door of my house open. Mother, came out along with Miss Adele and Connell. As my mother was doing her goodbyes to Miss Adele and Connell, I swiftly found refuge behind the thick, verdant bushes nearby. The rustling leaves barely masked my hurried movements. Connell, with his piercing gaze, seemed to glance in my direction. A shiver ran down my spine as I felt his eyes on me, almost as if he had sensed my presence. But he remained silent, his face an unreadable mask. The seconds felt like hours, every tick of the clock echoing loudly in my ears. Then, the sound of the car engine roared to life, shattering the silence. They drove off. I sighed heavily. Once, mother went inside. I seized the moment. My heart pounded in my chest as I made a mad dash for the waiting cab, the gravel crunching under my feet. I dared not look back, praying that my sudden disappearance would go unnoticed by my mother. The cab door closed behind me with a reassuring thud. I've instructed the cab driver to drive. Soon, I arrived at Brooklyn's house and paid the cab driver. I hopped out of the car, stepping into the golden gates of the property, I was instantly greeted by the sight of a giant 50-foot building lying in front of an enormous lake. As I approached the building, I pulled my hood over my head to avoid people staring because I didn't want anyone to recognize me. As I stepped through the double door of the house, I was blasted by the music coming from the main living room. I spun in the direction of the living room and, as I entered, the red and green lights were moving vividly. The smell of urine, m*******a, and beer pierced through my nostrils like a sword. I saw some familiar faces among the crowd from my school and some of them were strangers. They were drinking, and dancing to the loud music. Amanda, came running up to me and tried talking over the booming speakers that were next to me. "You want one?" I looked to see what she was pointing at and noticed the crystal bottle in her hand, the bubbly gold liquid was swaying inside the bottle as she moved from side to side. At that moment, I felt like I wasn’t there anymore, I didn't belong here. I was feeling extremely uncomfortable. I just need to find Candice and get the hell out of here. The loud booming music interrupted my thoughts, so I pushed that thought out of my head and I politely rejected the offer, but before Amanda left, I stopped her by asking… " Have you seen Haley or Candice?" " Um… Yeah, I think I saw them going upstairs." She replied. I thanked her and proceeded towards the double staircase, making my way out of the crowd. I was trapped on the stairs and my heart was beating impossibly fast. Don't know why? But my premonition hit me. With heavy legs, I climbed the last step. I looked to my right side and moved into the hallway to find Haley and Candice. As I was passing by a room door a sudden scent clouded my nose…jasmine... I stopped from my track and turned my attention towards it. I moved closer to it and saw the door creak open and curiosity took the worst out of me. As I decided to look inside… My eyes led on…
