“There is little earthmagic involved,” Gavoch explained conspiratorially to Fletcher. “The elevators are mostly powered by physics and mathematics. We devised pulleys and counterweights to raise and lower the platforms—magic only helps stabilize the system.” They reached the top floor and entered a throne room flooded with light. Glass walls curved in a dome, sculpted like the sides of a diamond, providing a panoramic view of the city. The room was brighter than anything Fletcher had seen in weeks. His eyes burned and watered. The cut of the crystal dome sent rainbow ripples spilling across the floor, which was carpeted with moss and lined with ferns. At the far end of the chamber sat a throne constructed of sturdy, twisted vines. The kzar perched on it regally, and standing beside him .
