22 Friendly Advice It appeared the other platform was no longer used and had no stairway access, so it took Maggie an awkward few minutes to climb down on to the tracks, wade through the snow and climb up the other side. There though, keen not to be seen as a litterer as well as a Billy No Mates and a single thirty-something who’d just been dumped on the eve of Christmas, she retrieved the pieces of her smartphone and put them into a bin at the end of the platform. Despite the initial shock of her phone’s wanton destruction, Maggie still remembered life before mobile phones took over the world, and knew she’d get used to being without it. It also meant she wouldn’t need to keep walking down to the station in the hunt for the odd bar or two of reception. In some ways, she felt liberated.
