Fiona's call

1096 Words
The little girl pursed her lips before she reached into her suit pocket and she took out her cell phone, which was ringing. She was shocked to see her mother’s name on the screen. ‘What great timing!!’ She raised her head and looked at her father’s face. She got down from the couch and took a few steps away from him so she could get some privacy for her conversation. Braydon Lu was amused by her actions but he did not disturb her. He let her do what she wanted. Lana took a deep breath before she answered the call, “Mom.” Braydon heard her addressing Fiona and froze on his spot. Was she talking to her? Actually, he wanted to turn away to give the little girl more privacy as she wished, but once he found that the person on the other side was Fiona Chen, he couldn’t do so anymore. Instead, he wanted to run towards the phone and attach himself to it so he could hear the voice of the person on the other side. His body subconsciously got up from his seat to do as he wished. But the moment his leg took a step towards the little girl, it stopped. What right did he have to listen to their conversation? She was no longer his wife. Instead, she was now his ex-wife. The ex-wife, who doesn’t want to have anything to do with him. A streak of sadness flashed past his eyes before he forcefully took his leg back and instead turned away from his daughter so that she wouldn’t see the sadness and despair in his eyes. He clenched his fist tight as a loud voice from the phone traveled towards his ears in his silent office, “Lana Chen, what gave you the strength to vanish from the house without a word, huh? Where did you go? Even if you left, why didn’t you take Shane along with you? Why aren’t you answering?” Though her voice sounded calm, the way she strung so many questions at once showed how scared she was for her daughter’s sake. The little girl knew her mother enough to know that she was really worried and was not as calm as she tried to be. She pursed her lips before she answered softly, “Mother, I am in.. City B.” There was a moment of silence in the entire office. Unknowingly, Braydon Lu’s fist clenched even tighter as he was waiting for her response. He wanted to know her reaction. Would she be angry? Would she be scared? Or would she cry? How would she react if she knew that their daughter had come to him? How would she react to remembering his name after all these years? After a few seconds of silence, her calm voice rang through the office, “Did you go to meet your Father?” The girl pursed her lips in hesitation but answered her nonetheless, “Yes.” “Is he beside you now?” Fiona Chen asked again. “Yes.” “Give him the phone.” “Okay.” The little girl walked towards Braydon Lu and tugged at his trousers as he was still standing away from her. When he felt the gentle tugging, Braydon Lu turned towards the girl, who passed her phone to him with an indifferent face. She did not say anything to him. Instead, she simply gestured to him to take the phone and talk. He knew that this was the moment he could talk to Fiona Chen after all these years. He felt there was so much to talk to her about but he did not know what to talk to her about. There was a complex mixture of emotions in his heart as he looked at the phone in the little girl’s little hand. He took the phone with his trembling hands before speaking, “Hello.” “Hi,” Fiona Chen ’s soft voice went into his ears. “I did not look for her,” he immediately clarified, because he did not want any misunderstandings between them. “I know,” Fiona Chen sighed. Of course she knew that it was not him that had come to their daughter. She knew that he would keep his promise, no matter how much he wanted to break it. She also knew her daughter well. Braydon Lu felt relieved when he heard her reply. He also felt a little happy that she still trusted him. “Umm..” Fiona Chen hesitated to speak as she did not know how to speak to him. The conversation between them happened a bit too suddenly. She was not at all prepared to talk to him. “You can tell me anything,” Braydon Lu knew her well. He could also understand why she felt awkward speaking to him. In fact, it was the same for him. “Umm.. Can you take care of her for a day? I will send Shane to pick her up by tomorrow morning.” No matter how fast Shane traveled, it would at least take ten hours to reach City B. Because she didn’t want to have any communication with Braydon Lu- even by accident- she did not keep any business connections in City B. Hence, there was no one she could turn for help to in City B. There was no other choice but to ask Braydon Lu for help. If possible, she wanted to keep them both as far away from each other as possible. She was scared that if they were to spend some time together, they would get closer to each other. No one can control a human’s emotions. She was scared that if Braydon Lu was attached to the girl, then he would want to fight against her for the child’s custody. She really doesn’t want to fight against him. She doesn’t want to involve the child in a battle between adults. That was also the reason why she had prepared all the documents beforehand during their divorce. She wanted to be well prepared and avoid all sorts of problems in the future. She knew everything was in her favor now, because of all the preparations she had made those years back. But what would she do if he suddenly wanted to fight her after getting attached to the kid? When Braydon Lu heard her words, he felt a pang of pain in his chest. He knew too well about her to understand the deep meaning behind her words.
