I stumbled backward, as I grew weak in the knees. Standing before me, wearing that same infuriatingly smug expression, was the man from the gallery. The man who had insulted my art and walked away drenched in champagne. “You,” I whispered. His piercing blue eyes locked onto mine, and a faint smirk tugged at his lips. He looked as composed and unbothered as he had that night, his tailored suit fitting him perfectly. My father cleared his throat awkwardly. “Sophia, I’d like you to meet Adrian Vale, your fiancé.” My chest tightened, a mix of anger and disbelief surging through me. Without saying a word, I turned on my heel and stormed out of the room. “Sophia, wait!” I heard my father call out after me, but I didn’t stop. I pushed open the front door, stepping into the cool morning air. I was desperate to escape the suffocating reality that had just been thrust upon me. But before I could take another step, I heard the sharp sound of footsteps behind me. “Sophia,” Adrian’s voice called, firm and commanding. I spun around to face him, barely masking my fury. “Don’t you dare say my name like that. Who the hell do you think you are?” Adrian raised an eyebrow, his calm demeanor only fueling my anger. “I think I’m the man who just agreed to save your family from financial ruin. A little gratitude wouldn’t hurt.” “Gratitude?” I snapped at him. “You think I’m going to thank you for blackmailing my father into marrying me off to you like some kind of property?” He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “Blackmail? That’s a strong word. Let’s call it a mutually beneficial arrangement.” My fists clenched at my sides. I refused to let him intimidate me. “There’s nothing mutual about this. You’re using my parents’ situation to force me into something I don’t want. It’s disgusting.” Adrian tilted his head, studying her with an intensity that unnerved me. “I’m not forcing you to do anything. You have a choice. Walk away, let your family lose everything, and leave your parents to face the consequences. Or, marry me and ensure their survival.” I flinched, the weight of his words crashing down on me. “You’re a monster,” I whispered. His expression darkened, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of something—pain, regret—but it vanished as quickly as it came. “Maybe,” he said, his voice low. “But I’m the monster your family needs right now.” I turned away, my chest heaving with suppressed rage and the feeling of helplessness. I wanted to fight back, to scream and tell him to go to hell, but the image of my parents losing everything stopped me. After a long moment, I forced myself to speak. “Fine, I’ll do it. But don’t think for a second that I’ll make this easy for you.” Adrian’s lips curved into a faint smile. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.” ~ Four days later, I found myself standing in front of a mirror in the grand ballroom of my parents estate. The engagement party was in full swing downstairs, a spectacle of wealth and opulence designed to distract people from the real reason behind the celebration. “Are you ready?” Evelyn asked, stepping into the room. I turned to my best friend, grateful for her comforting presence. Evelyn looked stunning in a deep emerald dress, her auburn hair styled in loose waves. “Do I look ready?” I muttered. Evelyn gave me a sympathetic smile. “You look beautiful, as always. But I know this isn’t exactly what you wanted.” “That’s an understatement. I feel like a pawn in someone else’s game.” She placed a hand on my shoulder. “Then play the game your way. Don’t let him win.” I nodded, taking a deep breath before heading downstairs. The ballroom was dazzling, and filled with elegantly dressed guests. Adrian stood near the center of the room, exuding an air of effortless dominance. He was surrounded by a group of businessmen, his expression cold and unreadable. I made my way towards him, my heart sinking as I noticed how distant he looked. He didn’t even spare me a glance as I joined his side. “Perfect timing,” he said, his tone devoid of warmth. “Smile for the cameras.” I forced a smile as photographers flashed their camera's. I felt more like a prop than a person. Later, as the party continued, I managed to escape to a quieter corner of the room. Evelyn soon joined me with two glasses of champagne. “How are you holding up?” She asked, handing me a glass. I sighed, taking a sip. “Terrible. He’s cold, distant, and completely infuriating. There’s no way I’ll ever fall for him.” Evelyn smirked. “Good. Keep it that way. You don’t owe him anything.” I nodded, even as my gaze drifted across the room. I spotted Adrian speaking with my father, his expression hard and unreadable. There was something unsettling about the way he looked at my father, as though he was sizing him up. “Why is he staring at my dad like that?” I murmured. Evelyn followed my gaze. “Maybe he’s just trying to intimidate him. He seems like the type.” But I wasn’t convinced. There was something deeper in Adrian’s eyes—something I couldn’t quite place. ~ As the night wore on, I found myself lingering near the edge of the ballroom, watching as Adrian excused himself and stepped out onto the balcony. I hesitated, then followed him, staying just out of sight. I heard the low murmur of his voice, speaking into his phone. “It’s all going according to plan,” he said, his tone cold and calculating. “The marriage is just the beginning. Once it’s done, I’ll have everything I need to take them down.” My heart stopped for a second. “What about the girl?” The voice on the other end was barely audible. “She’s a necessary inconvenience,” Adrian replied. “As long as she plays her part, everything will fall into place.” I pressed a hand to my chest, as I struggled to breathe. What was he talking about? What plan? Before I could process what I’d heard, Adrian turned in my direction. I quickly ducked back inside, my heart still racing. I had no idea what Adrian was planning, but one thing was clear—this marriage wasn’t just about saving my family. It was about something much darker.
