Mia's POV
The air seems to be frozen and I feel suffocated. I want to run away and hide myself but I cannot feel my legs when fear seizes me.
"What is this man talking about?" Madam Agnes asks in surprise, "You already have a mate?"
"He is lying. I am wolfless." I shake my head and nearly choke on my words, "I will never have a mate."
It is ridiculous that the curse I received now becomes a valuable gift, sound evidence that can prove my innocence.
Madam Agnes remains silent as if she is contemplating my words. To persuade her to support me, I hurriedly add, "Do you remember the scar on my cheek? The one that you heal? It was caused by the fire kiss, a cruel ritual held by the Black Moon Pack to punish members who intend to leave the pack. To keep my promise to Ryan, I took it to end my service to the pack. My bond to the pack was eternally terminated and he has no right to bring me back!"
"Shhh," Madam Agnes places her finger on my lips and informs me in a whisper, "But your scar is healed and now it is nowhere to be found. If Mr. Grey observes this and uses it against you, how can you defend yourself? "
"I—I," My eyes widen as I realize this could really happen if I rush out and confront Old Mike.
Old Mike is cunning and shameless and he can lie eloquently. Arguing with him will be a dominated strategy, especially when the evidence supporting me is gone.
I swallow down the words I intend to say and resort to an alternative, "Can you retrieve your healing call and give the scar back to me? I'd rather have it than go back with Old Mike. Please do not turn me to that evil man. I'll do anything as long as you allow me to stay here."
"The healing call is irretrievable. Nevertheless—" Madam Agnes pauses and gives me a gentle smile, "Chill out, young lady. Ryan won't let him have you."
"He won't?" I relax a little bit, not entirely convinced, though.
"Lycans don't like sharing things, particularly when it comes to persons they adore." Madam Agnes holds my hand and assures me, "You will be alright."
"Actually I am not quite certain about that." For a second I forget the dangerous situation I am facing. I start to complain to Madam Agnes like a teenager, "His Majesty is good at flirting and I don't know if his love profession is merely a routine for him."
"Seriously? I've never seen Ryan flirting with others before. How hypocritical men could be!" Madam Agnes chuckles, "But you just stole my nephew's first kiss and he seems to be happy about that. Judging by this simple truth, I tend to believe you're special to him."
I raise my hands to cover my reddened face and mutter, "I didn't know his identity when I kissed him."
Madam Agnes muses, "You wouldn't have dared to kiss him if you knew who he is, would you?"
"No." I admit honestly while shaking my head, "I cherish my life."
Madam Agnes lets out a hearty laugh and says, "You've made a beautiful mistake then. Anyway, stay here and enjoy the show. You shall see how Ryan tackles problems. He can be very cunning if he needs to be."
"As sleazy as a fox?" I suggest tentatively.
"Sleazier than a fox." replies Madam Agnes with a proud smile. She then sits on the stairs and eyes me to sit beside her, "Come here and enjoy the show."
I gladly accept the invitation and sit down like what she suggests. I face the entrance direction and carefully listen to the conversation between Ryan and Old Mike.
"Mia Hill," My body tenses up when Ryan slowly says my name. I take a sharp inhale and dare not to breathe out until he continues talking, "Are you sure this is the lady's name?"
"One hundred percent sure." Old Mike answers immediately.
"Patrick, would you mind checking the guest list for me?" Ryan asks, "I need to see if the lady Mr. Grey seeks has attended the party."
"But—" Patrick wants to say something but his voice ends abruptly when Aurora hisses at him. He then replies, "I'll do it immediately, Your Majesty."
"Your Majesty!" Old Mike exclaims, "Oh! Do forgive my blindness. My eyesight has been deteriorating these years and I didn't recognize your gorgeous face!"
"I am flattered," Ryan says curtly. It seems that he is immune to Old Mike's praise.
Old Mike lets out an embarrassing laugh. He clears his throat and asks Patrick, "Well, did you find her on the list?"
"Er, I suppose so." Patrick stutters, "But she doesn't leave her signature."
"That's a pity. We cannot tell if Lady Hill is present or not." Ryan cuts in, "Mr.Grey, would you please describe her to us a little bit? Say, what does she look like? The more details you offer, the easier we can help you find her. As you may notice, we're having a masquerade ball here, and I'd rather not disturb all of my guests."
"Sure." Old Mike replies, "She is 18-year-old, neither tall nor short. Her hair is light blond, and her eyes—sorry, I don't quite remember the color of her eyes. But I am pretty sure she has a scar on her cheek—"
"What happened?" Ryan suddenly asks. There is a tremor in his voice, not obvious, but I sense it anyway. I feel a warm stream surging through my body.
He does care.
"Oh, she accidentally knocked over a kettle and the boiling water burnt her face. The poor child." Old Mike sighs dramatically.
"He is lying." I grit my teeth, "The mark was left by a heated iron and it wasn't an accident!"
"Do you guys hear something from that corner?" Old Mike asks and I immediately cover my mouth.
"Could be my guinea pig." Aurora answers casually, "Squeaks, squeaks. She could be so noisy at night. I should have locked her in the cage."
"Or you can find a snake to solve the problem." Old Mike sneers, "You can get it done once and for all."
"You're so cruel!" cries Aurora.
"On the contrary, I am a merciful man. Too merciful indeed." Old Mike retorts, "Although bad things happened to Lady Hill, I didn't forsake her when everyone else in the Black Moon Pack wanted to exile her. They coulld not stand her ugliness, which seemed too shallow to me. I insisted that Lady Hill should be our future Luna because that's what she deserves. The moon goddess pairs Lady Hill with the Gamma of our pack and I wish the couple the best. Very unfortunately, most members didn't listen to me and mock at Lady Hill's scar, which angered her. Therefore, she left the pack and claimed that she would never come back. Her leaving made her mate heartbroken and the poor kid fainted and was in a coma. The pack doctor said that Lady Hill's return would help him recover, which was why our Alpha sent me to fetch Lady Hill."
Old Mike weaves a net of lies, and I can't help but worry Ryan would be tricked into believing him.
"But how do you know that Lady Hill is heading here?" asks Ryan. His voice sounds mild. Too mild to be true. He is really good at concealing his emotion, which makes it difficult for me to figure out what he is thinking merely by hearing his voice.
"Before the horrible accident, Lady Hill has informed us that she wanted to go to Red Mansion for a royal party." Old Mike pauses a while and adds, "I assume she will probably visit here."
"Are you done?" Ryan asks gently.
"I've told you all I know, Your Majesty." Old Mike answers proudly, waiting for Ryan to help him find me.
"Good." Ryan muses and suddenly orders, "Patrick, arrest Mr. Grey and send him to my Uncle. Tell the General to interrogate Mr. Grey on behalf me, since I won't be available these days."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"What?" there is a croak in Old Mike's voice. He shouts in a horror, "There must be some misunderstandings here! Why do you arrest me? Your Majesty! I am a poor old man and I deserve none of this! Tell me what crime I've committed and I should be given a chance to defend myself!"
"You should shut the f**k up and rut in jail." Aurora snarls. Madam Agnes frowns but my fond of her grows.
"Language, young lass." Ryan clears his throat.
"Alright, alright." Aurora huffs and remains silent in the following pause.
"Don't play the fool with me, Mr. Grey. I don't have much patience for spies like you." Ryan says in a serious tone, "Didn't you say you come here to find Lady Hill?"
"Yes, I did. But I don't think there is any problem—"
"Well, there is. Lady Hill trespassed the lycan's territory and I caught her myself. After interrogation, she confessed that she was sent by the Black Moon Pack to spy on the royals. According to Lady Hill, you are conspiring against the royals and are going to leak our information to vampires." Ryan says coldly, "Lady Hill ratted you out and promised to help me catch her pack members in exchange for a commutation. Your pack was accused of conspiracy against royals. How would you like to defend yourself, Mr.Grey?"
"Mia is a spy?! Oh, yes, yes. This must be the reason why she behaved so weird recently!" Old Mike exclaims, "She lied to you, Your Majesty! In fact, we sense there must be something wrong with that wicked girl so we've already banished her. The fire kiss has already terminated her service to the Black Moon pack and what she did has nothing to do with us!"
"Fire kiss?"
"That—that's a ritual held by our pack. Lady Mill took the fire kiss, so she no longer belongs to the Black Moon Pack. Our pack should not be blamed for the crime she committed."
"Really? But you just said you're here to bring Lady Hill back—" Ryan asks in a threatening voice, "Didn't you say her mate needs her? Maybe I should visit him in person to see if he also participates in espionage. What's his name?"
"Jack. He is called Jack. But Jack is a good kid, and he will never commit such a crime. Please, please spare him. He is still in bed." Old Mike whines.
"Heartbroken because of Lady Hill's being away. I remember what you said, Mr. Grey," Ryan says sarcastically, "How would you expect me to do now? I can't send Lady Hill back because she is under interrogation. If her mate, Jack, is it? If Jack wants to see her, the only practical way is to come here himself."
"No, no, no. Forget it!" Old Mike lets out a hollow laugh, "Compared to mating bond, loyalty is our primary concern, Your Majesty. Lady Hill committed treason, and Jack would never want her back. We will find him another mate. Don't you worry! Lady Hill is at your mercy, Your Majesty. And you shall never spare her. Wicked soul like her should be hanged and burnt like witches—"
"Hey!" Aurora feels offended and shouts, "Get out! Out!"
Old Mike ignores her and keeps persuading Ryan to execute me until Old Mike eventually realizes there is no response from Ryan. He pauses for a while and asks nervously, "Your Majesty?"
"Are you deaf enough to miss what this young lass asked you to do?" Ryan answers coldly and adds in an unarguable voice, "Out."
