Chapter Eighteen -The Waiting

Chapter Eighteen – The Waiting The note was the first thing she saw. Elena’s eyes blinked open to the faint wash of dawn spilling across the room. The sheets beside her were cold, already empty. For a moment, panic surged—had Hale taken him, too?—but then she spotted it on the kitchen counter. Stay with the guards. Don’t open the door. Don’t answer the phone. Trust me. The handwriting was Adrian’s. Sharp, deliberate. Final. Her hand trembled as she held the note. Trust him? He had vanished into the morning without explanation, without her. He thought he was protecting her, she knew that—but the silence clawed at her worse than Hale’s whispers. --- The hours dragged. She tried to read, to distract herself, but every creak of the apartment made her jump. She hovered near the balcony doors, half-expecting Hale to step through again. The guards outside were a comfort, but only barely. Hale always seemed a step ahead, always knew how to slip through the cracks. And Adrian… what if he didn’t come back? Her thoughts spiraled, dark and heavy. Adrian wasn’t invincible. He carried ghosts she’d only glimpsed—the kind that made his eyes harden when he spoke of “wars” she didn’t understand. If Hale had lured him somewhere, if it was a trap— Her chest tightened, tears burning her eyes. She hated herself for it, but she needed him. Needed the sound of his voice, the weight of his arms anchoring her when she felt she might shatter. Without him, the apartment was too quiet, too empty, too dangerous. --- It was dusk before the door finally opened. Elena leapt to her feet, her breath catching. Adrian stepped inside, his shirt torn, his knuckles bloodied, a thin cut slicing across his cheek. He moved with the stiffness of someone who had been in a fight but refused to admit it. “Elena,” he said softly. She crossed the room before he could say more, hands pressing against his chest, his arms, checking for wounds. “Where were you? You can’t just disappear like that—I thought—” Her voice cracked. “I thought he had you.” His hands caught hers, stilling her frantic touch. “I had to go,” he said, voice low, steady. “I found where he hides. I saw what he’s done. He’s more dangerous than we thought.” Her breath hitched. “And you went alone?” His jaw tightened, but he didn’t let go of her hands. “I couldn’t risk him knowing you were involved. If he’d sensed you were near—” “I am involved,” she snapped, surprising herself with the heat in her voice. “You think I can just sit here while you throw yourself into his trap? What if you hadn’t come back, Adrian? What then?” For a moment, silence stretched between them. His eyes, so hard when he walked through the door, softened at the break in her voice. “I came back,” he said quietly. “For you. Always for you.” Her anger collapsed into sobs before she could stop it. He pulled her into his arms, holding her as though he’d never let go. She buried her face in his chest, breathing in the scent of sweat, iron, and the faint warmth of him alive. “I can’t lose you,” she whispered. “You won’t,” he promised, though his voice trembled at the edges. “I swear, Elena—you won’t.” But as she clung to him, she felt the tension thrumming in his body, the unspoken truth between his heartbeat and hers. He couldn’t promise her that. Not really. ---
