Chapter Seven – Shadows and Choices The rain hadn’t stopped all night. It hammered against the glass of Elena’s apartment window like impatient fingers demanding entry. She sat curled on the sofa, knees to her chest, the library’s fluorescent afterimage still buzzing behind her eyes. Hale’s words replayed, circling like vultures. I see you. You don’t belong to silence anymore. You belong to me. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his face — calm, unwavering, certain. No hesitation. No doubt. He wanted her, claimed her, as though she had no say in the matter. And yet… A part of her wanted to believe. She pressed her forehead to her knees, guilt clawing at her chest. Adrian had been right to reject her. What kind of woman felt drawn to the very man who terrified her? What kind of woman folded fear into something that almost felt like safety? Her phone buzzed on the table. Adrian. She hesitated before answering, fingers trembling as she lifted it to her ear. “Elena.” His voice was clipped, formal, but beneath it ran something taut, something uneasy. “We need to talk.” Her stomach lurched. “About what?” There was a pause, just long enough to sharpen her nerves. “I received a note. About you.” Her chest tightened. “A note?” “Yes. Hand-delivered, somehow. It said…” Another pause, then his voice dropped lower. “It said you belong to someone else. He wanted them both caught in his web. “Elena,” Adrian continued, his tone darkening. “Is there someone bothering you? Following you?” She swallowed hard. The truth clawed at her throat, begging to be spoken. But what would he think if she admitted it? That she hadn’t just been stalked, but had let herself… feel something about it? “I—I don’t know,” she whispered. “Maybe it’s nothing.” “Nothing doesn’t write letters.” His voice sharpened. “Meet me tomorrow. My office. I want to see you. Face to face.” The call ended before she could reply. Elena set the phone down, her pulse hammering. Adrian was pulling her into his world now — sleek, powerful, ordered. But she wasn’t sure she belonged there any more than she belonged in Hale’s darkness. Lightning split the sky, flooding the room with sudden white light. For a heartbeat, Elena thought she saw a figure outside on the street, motionless in the rain. When the darkness returned, the street was empty. She pulled the curtains closed, pressing the fabric together with both hands. Shadows pressed in on all sides. And between Adrian’s demand and Hale’s promise, she realized with a shiver that she was no longer free to choose silence. Her only choice now was whose voice she would follow into the dark. -
