Two Wolves One Kitcken

They arrived at the same time. That was the part Mara hadn't anticipated — both of them, simultaneously, at seven in the morning, one at her front door and one materializing silently at her back door like the universe had specifically coordinated their arrivals to make her life as complicated as possible. Cael knocked. Loudly. The way wolves did everything — with complete disregard for subtlety. Soren simply appeared, already inside the kitchen, already seated at her table with his hands folded like he had been there for hours and was mildly disappointed it had taken her this long to notice. "You need to leave," Cael said the moment he saw Soren. His voice dropped to something low and dangerous that vibrated in Mara's chest like a struck chord. "I was here first," Soren replied without looking up. "Technically." "I don't care about technically—" "You rarely do. It's one of your more consistent qualities." Cael's jaw tightened. The temperature in the kitchen dropped two degrees — Mara felt it on her skin, watched the window fog slightly at the edges. When wolves pushed their energy outward without meaning to, the air responded. She had read about it once in a book she wasn't supposed to have. "Stop it," she said sharply. Both of them looked at her. "Both of you. This is my kitchen. My house. My rules." Silence. Cael looked at her like she had just done something remarkable. Soren looked at her like she had just confirmed something he already suspected. "Sit down," she said, pulling the grandmother's letter from her pocket and placing it flat on the table between them. "We need to talk." Neither of them argued. That alone told her everything.
