As the journey started, I had my insides move with such anxiety. I was fat away from home l? barely a few days ago my grandma had died. I had absolutely no one.

I knew that if things didn’t turn out as planned, I was going to go back home to our village. If my family didn’t accept me, I would simply accept my fate and go back home to where I belonged.

Remembering what Lucy had told me had even made me more afraid. “The area of the rich.”

I had never thought of that. It had never occurred to me that my family would be rich. Perhaps they were rich as Nina’s family. After all Nina’s family was the richest in our village or maybe more.

I swallowed at the thought of that. The rich girls in my school had always looked down on me, even though I genuinely appreciated the little grandma and I had. Sometimes they left me feeling like there was something wrong with me.

“So what are you going to do in the city?” I asked Lucy trying to remove the impending thoughts from my mind.

She smiled at me. “Well, i sort of have school to attend. Left to me, I would quit, but it’s a family thing.”

“University?” I asked her.

She laughed. “Hell no. If I had the option of university, I would have dropped out by now, trust me. I’m a teacher.”

“You don’t look like one.” I said in shock. I would have never thought she was a teacher.

“I get that a lot.” She said. “I actually went through all forms of education. I just took a short break. School is actually in session but then because I’m the best teacher I’m allowed to come late.”

I smiled. “That must be nice.”

“So how old are you?” She asked me.

“I’m fifteen.” I said.

“Fifteen?” She nodded. “That’s a really young age to be traveling all on your own. Especially since you have no idea where you’re going to.”

Before I could speak, she smiled at me. “You don’t need to worry about that. I figured it out already. You have this look of pure innocence. I can tell your type anytime. And don’t worry it’s okay. There is a first time for everything.”

I nodded.

Then she breathed in. “So tell me, you’re on vacation? Usually schools should be in session by now.”

“Would I get arrested?” I asked in fear. “I heard you get arrested for missing school.”

“It is an offense.” She said. “Don’t worry I won’t let anyone arrest you. If they ask you’re my younger sister who just came visiting.”

I smiled. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” She said. “So where is your mum? Or dad?”

I looked down at my lap. Une was playing with some of his seed in the cage.

“My mum is gone. She died a long time ago.” I said.

“I am so sorry.” Lucy said looking genuinely apologetic.

I nodded and gave a tight smile. “Thanks. I’ve been living with my grandma for a while now. But she passed away a few days ago.”

Lucy looked even more apologetic. “You have been through so much. I am so sorry. How are you coping?”

“Strong. My grandma would want me to be strong.” I said.

“And that’s good. I’m sure she would want that.” She said. “You’ve had so much dark energy. You need to cleanse yourself.”

Lucy fished through her bag and brought out a silver stone that was made into a necklace and handed it to me.

“This is a very special crystal. It wades off dark energy. Seeing you with the owl, I know that you believe in spirituality. This would protect you.” She said closing my fingers with it. “Wear it and it would keep you safe.”

“But you barely know me.” I said in surprise.

“Well you never can tell who you meet every single day and you don’t really need a time line to be a determinant factor on when yo give a gift do you?” She asked me.

I chuckled. “No.”

“Good.” Lucy winked.

“Thank you so much.” I said looking at it in my palm and then I put it over my head.

“You’re welcome.” Lucy said. “I’ll take you to the address myself.”

“Are you sure?” I said blown by her kindness.

“Look I have a Little sister.” Lucy said. “Well, she is quite naughty but I’m looking at you like my younger sister. You’re in a city you’ve never been to. I can afford to leave you alone. As well as there are good people in this city, there are bad people too. And I can’t afford to let you in harms way.”

“But don’t you have somewhere to be?” I asked.

“I missed school for over a month. Another day wouldn’t be so bad.” She said.

“What can I give you for all of this?” I asked her. “I don’t have much money but I can give you from what I have.”

She laughed. “Sweetheart I don’t need your money. You need it more than I do. Keep it. If you had had so much you would have bought an extra chair seat. Don’t worry. Accept my gift and everything else. Sometimes people do things to not get things in return.”

“My grandma taught me that.” I said.

“Your grandma taught you well.” She winked at me. “We need more girls like you these days.”

Then she smiled and adjusted herself on her chair and her chameleon moved to her shoulder to rest and she closed her eyes to take a little nap and I could not shake myself on how lucky I had just been.

I fingered the crystal on my chest as the journey went on and I soon fell asleep too.
