Chapter 7: My Ex Meets Lucien

“So this is our target?” I whispered to Marcus as we stood at the edge of the ballroom, pretending to admire the chandelier. Marcus nodded, sipping from a glass of champagne he hadn’t touched. “Big icon...Old money...Name’s not on anything directly, but controls everything behind the scenes.” I scanned the crowd to find him. I noticed that he was wearing fancy clothes and also wearing smiles with people flocking around to have the privilege to greet him. “He looks like royalty,” I muttered. "Royalty with a lot of skeletons in the cupboard..." Marcus flinched towards my direction. “Don’t say that too loud...someone might actually be one.” "But I'm not lying, I'm just stating facts." I rolled my eyes. "Yes true...facts that could get us killed or worse turned into dead bodies that can heal." We both chuckled then after five minutes we split up. Marcus took the east wing; I moved toward the main lounge where more deals were happening than drinks. I scanned the area and my eyes met Damian Kross. I could feel my soul leaving my body. He hadn’t changed much. He was still still tall, and handsome. He had black short hair that brought out his small annoying face. He still dressed like a charming man that he wasn't. His annoyingly stupid smirk hit me first, then a cold glint in his eyes. “Seraphina?” he said, tilting his head and coming closer to me. I stood still, bending my waist to the side. I wasn't going to let him think he left me as the same old insecure girly. “Damian.” “Wow,” he said, stepping closer and eyeing my body from head to toe. “Didn’t expect to see you here… unless you’re delivering drinks now?” I kept my face still like I wasn't bothered. “I’m just enjoying the party...you're not the only one who likes to enjoy life....” He looked me up and down again, but this time slowly. “Guess you dumped your naive hope for being a cop...so what are you doing now?" I didn't reply. A waiter passed by with wine. I picked one, sipping it and calming myself so as not to murder him. “You used to be so... hopeful,” he said, still smiling like he hadn’t ruined me. “You know...you used to tell me you wanted to save the world by being a cop and I told you the world doesn’t care...it's either eat or be eaten...it's all games...” I stayed silent, trying not to give him the satisfaction. “You know,” he said, coming into my personal space. “When I left, I thought you'd crash...But you got yourself together and you're looking so inviting right now...Good for you.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “Yeah. I did it without your help...you didn't break me...” He laughed once. “You're still bitter, honey? Come on. You were just a little girl with big dreams. It was never going to work between us...I was way above your level...you were nothing...you're still nothing.” I looked at him with all irritation in my eyes. “You used me...lied to me...controlled my life...took what you wanted and disappeared.” He shrugged then chuckled. “It’s not my fault you believed everything I said...you fell for my charm...” He stepped closer again, closing the space left between us. “That's by the way...why are you here, really? What are you trying to do this time?” I opened my mouth to respond but I stopped as I sighted Lucien. He stepped between us, calmly. He was wearing a complete set black suit and looked so breathtaking. I gasped, trying to avoid looking at him directly. “Is there a problem here?” he asked, with his annoyingly attractive deep voice. In my head, my answer was; "Yes there is a problem...your perfume...your scent...what ever it is...it's making me uncomfortable." Damian blinked, looking irritated and caught off guard. “And you are?” Lucien looked at me with a small smile. “I’m her boyfriend. And you?” Damian’s face twitched. “I’m an old friend...her boyfriend to be exact. ” Lucien chuckled. “Ah... One of those... The type that loses a diamond and only realizes it after she’s out of the dirt.” I raised a brow at Lucien. That was… unexpected. But felt good. Damian’s jaw tightened. “Who the hell are you?" He turned to me. "You’re with him?” I smiled. “Yeah. I traded up...”Lucien placed his arm around my waist, casually possessive. “Let me warn you, friend...if you try to touch what’s mine again, I’ll break your hand.” Well, I doubt he was lying about the breaking hand part...he could actually rip him apart in a second. At that point, I wouldn't mind... Damian’s face turned red. “You can’t talk to me like...” “I can. And I just did. What are you gonna do about it?” Damian stepped forward with his fists clenched. “You think you’re untouchable...right?” Lucien didn’t flinch...he just smiled a bit. “I don't think...I know I am. Do you even know what Lucien Kael looks like? ” I held my breath, while Damian's eyes went wide open. "What? there's no way....." He quickly brought out his phone, browsing the web. A picture of Lucien came up and he lifted the phone up to compare the faces. He experienced few minutes of shock then dropped the phone down slowly. He was swearing and muttering something to himself before he apologized to Lucien and quickly stormed off, disappearing into the crowd. I turned to Lucien. “You didn’t have to do that...” “I know,” he said. “But I wanted to...” His hand was still on my waist and sending various signals to my brain. My body was reacting, getting warm again. I pushed him away from myself; quickly trying to leave. I figured he was probably the one doing something to make me feel this way. But he quickly grabbed my hand and dragged me back to him. My body came into his, my face was directly on his chest...my hands on his breasts. Then he whispered into my left ear. " Let's make your little ex jealous....shall we."
