TWO-FIRST IMPRESSIONS

1709 Words
Emma woke up quite early the next morning. Her eyes opened before the sun had fully risen. She lay in bed for a few moments, staring blankly at the ceiling, feeling her heart beat a little faster than usual. Today was the day Lily would arrive. Emma’s stomach fluttered in a mix of excitement and nerves. She had barely slept because she kept thinking about the woman that had sparked her curiosity since. She had only seen her on video calls before, but even those short glimpses had left a mark. The way she talked, always so happy and excited. There was something about Lily that Emma couldn’t put into words, something that made her feel curious and something else she wasn’t ready to name. She just wanted to see it in person. She swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood. The floor was cool under her bare feet. She walked around her small apartment, her mind buzzing with thoughts. She straightened cushions on the couch, folded a stray blanket, and carefully set out coasters on the coffee table. She opened the kitchen cabinets and made sure the plates and glasses were neatly arranged. Emma paused for a moment, placing a hand over her heart. “Deep breaths,” she whispered to herself. “Everything will be fine. Just be yourself. She is Alex's sister, so she must not be so bad.” She smoothed the tablecloth in the dining area one more time, then walked to the front door and checked the locks. Her reflection in the small mirror by the door caught her eye. She smiled nervously at herself. “You can do this,” she said. Her phone buzzed on the counter. A quick glance showed a message reminder from Alex: Lily arrived at ten. Be ready. Emma’s pulse jumped. Ten minutes? No ten hours? She had to focus. She went back to tidying, straightening everything that seemed even slightly out of place. A soft knock at the door startled her. She jumped and turned quickly, thinking it might be Alex returning from an early errand. But it wasn’t. It was the delivery person, holding a small package. “Hi,” Emma said, smiling. “Thank you.” “No problem,” the delivery person replied, handing over the box. Emma took it inside and closed the door behind her. She peeked inside. It was a small gift from Alex. The note inside read:"" I know you’re nervous, but you will be fine. A little late, but thoughtful. She smiled, feeling a warm flutter in her chest. It was a small thing, but it helped calm her nerves. Finally, she heard the sound she had been waiting for. It was Alex’s car pulling into the driveway. Emma’s heart leapt. She took a deep breath, smoothing her hair and adjusting her dress one more time. She had looked in the mirror more than ten times, making sure she looked presentable. This was it. Lily was coming. The doorbell rang, and Emma jumped. She walked quickly toward the door, careful not to trip over her own feet. Her hand hovered over the doorknob. She tried to breathe slowly, but her chest felt tight with anticipation. When she opened the door, there she was. Lily stood in the doorway, tall and poised. She had a warm smile that didn’t feel forced, but confident at the same time. She carried herself easily, like she belonged in any space she entered. Emma’s chest tightened not in fear, but in a way that made her feel very aware of the moment. Lily was real, not just a name or a face on a screen. She was a sight to behold. “Hi, you must be Emma,” Lily said. Her voice was soft, clear, and gentle. “Alex has told me so much about you, especially on the drive here.” Emma blinked. “Yes,” she almost stuttered. “I’m Emma."" It’s nice to meet you.” Her voice sounded smaller than she wanted it to. Lily extended her hand, and Emma shook it. It was warm and steady. Emma noticed the small things about her, the crinkle of Lily’s eyes when she smiled, the calm tilt of her head, and the slight pause before she stepped fully inside. Lily was already looking around, quietly noticing the apartment as she walked in. “Thank you for having me,” Lily said, stepping fully into the apartment. “Your apartment is very lovely.” Emma smiled nervously, feeling shy. “Oh, thank you. Please, make yourself comfortable. Alex is finishing up some work, but he’ll be here soon.” Lily set her bag down carefully and looked around casually. “It feels nice, cozy. Alex talks about it all the time. I was curious to see the place he keeps talking about.” Emma laughed softly, a little embarrassed. “I hope he hasn’t exaggerated.” “Not at all,” Lily said with a small smile. “He just likes talking about people who make him happy.” Her eyes lingered on Emma for a moment longer than necessary, and Emma felt a small flutter in her stomach. She shook it off. It was just first impressions. Nothing more. Alex arrived shortly after, carrying a bag of groceries. He looked cheerful, smiling at both of them. “Hey, everyone!” he said, putting the groceries on the counter. He hugged and kissed her cheek quickly and then turned to Lily. “There she is! Welcome!” Lily smiled warmly and hugged Alex tightly. “Good to see you,” she said. Then she turned to Emma. “And hello again, Emma,” she said softly. Emma smiled and nodded, feeling her heart beat a little faster. She followed them into the kitchen. Alex began unpacking the groceries while chatting comfortably with Lily, laughing at little memories from their past. Emma watched quietly, noticing the easy familiarity between the siblings. There was a rhythm to their interaction, a natural flow that she wasn’t part of yet, but wanted to understand. She never had siblings, so she didn’t understand how it was. Dinner was simple but pleasant. Emma had prepared pasta, salad, and some bread. Lily moved around the kitchen like she had done this many times before, helping Alex set plates, pouring water, arranging napkins. Emma tried to help too, but her movements felt awkward at first. “You don’t have to do everything, you know,” Lily said kindly, noticing Emma’s hesitance. “Just relax. I can help.” Emma blushed. “Thanks, I just didn’t want to seem useless.” “You’re not useless,” Lily said gently, smiling. “I’m sure Alex would have plenty to say if you were. He talks a lot about you, by the way. A lot. It makes me jealous.” Emma shifted nervously, feeling a little shy. She nodded, smiling. There was a small warmth in her chest, a quiet reassurance. Lily wasn’t intimidating. She was kind, calm, and approachable but also quietly confident. They sat down for dinner, and the conversation flowed naturally. Alex told a funny story from work, and Lily laughed, the sound light and clear. Emma laughed too, feeling her nerves ease a little. She noticed small things about Lily: the way she twirled a strand of hair absentmindedly, the way she tilted her head when she listened, the gentle sparkle in her eyes when she laughed. As the meal continued, Emma felt a strange mix of emotions. She was happy, nervous, curious, and intrigued all at once. Lily was real, alive in the same room. And yet, she wasn’t scary or unkind. She was simply herself. After dinner, they moved to the living room. Alex leaned back on the couch comfortably, and Lily perched on the armrest beside him. Emma sat across from them on the other side of the couch, her hands folded in her lap. They talked about simple things, favorite movies, hobbies, childhood memories. Alex had also spoken about their wedding which would be coming soon, and she felt Lily’s eyes on her after that. She felt like a stranger in their midst. She admired how they were so close. Emma noticed some subtle moments, like the way Lily’s gaze sometimes found hers, the quiet attentiveness in her expressions. Emma returned the glances, trying to keep her curiosity gentle and respectful. There was a sense of awareness between them, a small, unspoken connection forming in the quiet spaces of conversation. Alex didn’t notice or if he did, he didn’t comment. He seemed relaxed, trusting the evening to flow naturally. Lily was friendly and open, yet reserved in a subtle way. It felt like she was carefully learning about Emma, but without making it obvious. The conversation eventually turned to childhood stories. Lily told tales of mischief she and Alex had gotten into, laughing at pranks and silly arguments that Emma had never heard of before. Emma laughed, feeling herself relax. Lily wasn’t intimidating. She was part of Alex’s life, yes, but she was approachable, warm, and kind. Emma felt a quiet relief settle over her. The nerves that had knotted her stomach that morning were easing. The initial tension of meeting someone new was fading, replaced by comfort and a small curiosity that felt exciting rather than frightening. As Lily excused herself to unpack her bag, Emma noticed a small detail, a fleeting glance from Lily that felt like curiosity in return. Emma shook her head lightly, reminding herself not to overthink it. Not yet. She smiled quietly to herself, replaying moments from the day in her mind. Lily was real now. No longer just a face on a screen, no longer a distant presence in Alex’s stories. She was there, in the same room, alive, warm, and easy to talk to. And somehow, that made everything feel different. Emma let herself breathe deeply. For the first time since Lily had been mentioned in her life, she felt she could see herself fitting into this part of Alex’s world. She didn’t know what would come next, but she felt ready to face it with calm, curiosity, and a small, cautious excitement.
