EVA LEVESQUE
The travel took us an hour. We drove through the city along with the tall buildings and busy streets. Half an hour later, we were driving through the trees to the top of the hill in a secluded place where our school will be. During our middle school, we are granted the opportunity to choose between several high schools. I did not really have any school in mind so I just followed where Irene and my first love will study.
We stopped at the main entrance. Tall and large bar gates surrounded the whole school with pine trees in front of it. The main gate was several feet high with an arc on the top with the name of the school on it.
Helios High
The school is known to be a prestigious school and only a few can enroll. Hybrid monsters of the high class also enroll in this school. Irene’s mom owns a large law firm while my dad is a veteran and has special privileges so entering this school was not that hard for us.
As soon as we got out of the car, people started staring at us. Irene and Helle paid no mind and helped in getting the luggage but I froze in my spot, ever since I was in middle school I was known as the daughter of the last executioner. The blood flowing in my veins was a symbol that my clan is a family of executioners. Monster Hybrids hated me and humans made fun of me. There was no in-between, I wasn’t accepted in any of them.
A warm hand held my arm. I looked beside me and saw Irene grinning at me.
“You ready Eva?” she asked. I hesitated for a bit and saw Helle staring at me through Irene’s shoulders and she nodded with determination. It was hard for me to take her seriously since she was wearing sunglasses, a yellow hat, and a yellow umbrella so I broke out a smile and nodded.
“Never ready but I’m okay,” I told them. Irene nodded enthusiastically at patted my back.
We walked towards the main door while everyone was staring. I kept my head down all the time, the staring still made me uncomfortable. I stole a look at Irene, walking confidently with her head held high and those long legs of hers.
I wish I was even half as confident as her.
As I was walking, I noticed one of my shoelaces are undone so I quickly kneeled and tied it down. By the time I stood up, Irene and Helle are nowhere to be found, I searched in the crowd of talking students but I couldn’t see Irene’s blond hair.
I stumbled upon an invisible rock and fell backward. I fell into something hard and as soon as I regained my balance I turned to so a huge hybrid student’s back. He started to turn towards me with an annoyed expression. He wore a yellow hoodie, his beastly body fitting the jacket. His face was that of a lion’s and he had paws and claws for hands. His other friends also turned towards me. A girl with scaly skin and sharp fangs, another a girl with olive skin and luminescent eyes.
“Watch where you’re—” he stopped when he saw me. A sudden realization dawned on him and he growled, it was normal for a hybrid like him to sense danger when I was around. It’s an unspoken rule between monsters and executioners, our kind can never be friends. Forcing us to establish a relationship is like mixing oil and water, they just don’t mix.
“I’m sorry,” I quickly apologized. People started to surround us and stare. Watching our every move, anticipating who starts the fight first.
“Hey”
I turned to a familiar voice. He stood there with his disheveled hazel brown hair and black hoodie, he walked towards us and flashed a smile. He ignored me and walked towards the hybrid, his dark aura was lifted, and performed a unique handshake with him.
“What’s up dude,” he asked. The hybrid nodded and they started to talk. The crowd started to disperse and it felt like my whole existence was forgotten, not that I’m complaining. I stood there awkwardly, waiting for them to finish. He said his goodbyes and the hybrid left in a good mood.
He faced me, his smile disappearing. When I saw his face, I couldn’t stop myself and ran to him for a hug. I inhaled his cologne, the same cologne he used since we were eight. I heard him chuckle, his laugh vibrating on his chest where my head is. He slowly parted from me and messed with my hair.
“Come on Eva, you’re seventeen now. You shouldn’t just hug any boy so casually,” he scolded me.
“You’re not just any boy though,” I told him. He shook his head and walked with me.
“Let me guess,” he said, “you got lost because Irene was busy talking again.”
I nodded. I looked at Sigrid, his tall nose and long lashes made me blush and look away. I’ve always liked him for years now, all these times I followed him like a puppy never confessing my feelings for him.
I bit my lip and stared at my hands. I couldn’t help myself but smile, I feel happy whenever I’m with him and feel like I could go on with this forever.
“Oh,” he stopped walking like he remembers something. I got surprised and came to a halt several steps after him, I turned to look back at him but he walked towards me. I froze when he stood only millimeters away from me, all I could see was the letter E printed on his jacket.
I wanted to assume E was for Eva but it was just a random gift to him by Kyros, our other friend. I heard a ‘click’ before he stepped away. He looked at me and grinned as if he was proud of me, my hands traveled to my head, and felt a metallic thing clipped to my hair.
“My birthday gift,” he said and smile. My smile widened but at the moment I felt a sharp pain in my head. I hissed and closed my eyes, I felt him hold both of my shoulders, I tried to look at him but it was only a blurred image of his face.
Scenes started to switch from his face to the face of someone with darkness and fire around him. This happened several times in seconds, I shook my head trying to shake the thought off but I was still in pain.
I never thought I’d lose consciousness in his arms that day.
