Chapter 6: Interrogation

1820 Words
EVA LEVESQUE “Kyros,” I whispered. He’s grown so much in a year. He used to be such a child and now he’s even taller than me. He smiled slightly and nodded. “Please come with us.” He respectfully said. I looked at Irene and Sigrid, they nodded. I noticed Sigrid’s blood-stained clothes and stared at my own. The sight of blood makes me uncomfortable and sick. How unbecoming of an executioner’s daughter. I was trained to fight and yet the sight of blood makes me feel dizzy. I walked behind Kyros whose royal blue vest was facing me. His subordinates walked beside and behind me. We entered the Student Council’s office. The double doors made of oak opened. A large room greeted us with fairly dim lighting. The wall-sized window curtain was opened, exposing a large window that exposed the blue sky. The weather was too pretty for someone to be in the accident. “Please sit,” he said, removing his vest and placing it neatly beside him. He was sitting at the other end of the long table as his other subordinate took a seat beside him. I was made to seat at the other end in front of him with both guard councils beside me. “We have rather sad news,” he said in a sullen tone. Everybody bowed their heads in respect. I was left sitting there not knowing anything but I felt nervous, I felt my heart thumping and reaching the back of my throat. I felt like I know what he was going to say and I swear I wished to hear anything but that. “Cory Freelow, a sophomore in Helios High has passed away. She did not make it.” He said. I heard a gasp escape from my mouth. She did not make it. When did it happen? Was it when I was in the bathroom? The room turned silent. I don’t know if it’s because they were mourning or already thinking of who did this to her. After seconds of silence, Kyros lifted his head, eyes all serious, and an aura full of authority. It’s hard for me to think that the Kyros I know from before are standing in front of me like a whole different person. “Today we will start investigating what happened so we can provide information to the officials. I ask the people in the council to be clear-headed and state facts and opinions without bias. With Miss Eva Levesque here, our primary witness, we will be now starting with the questions.” He stated. I noticed the people in the room are equally numbered were hybrids and humans. “Miss Eva Levesque, how did you know that Miss Cory Freelow was badly injured in a room several meters from yours?” one of the councils asked, a human boy wearing glasses. “I have sharpened senses and smell. Mostly sensitive to the scent of blood,” I started, “as you all know, I belong to the family of executioners. We have enhanced abilities that are above average from a normal human being.” “And, you say that when you saw her she was already covered in blood? Is that right?” another girl said. I nodded in response. “I saw blood smears on the wall coming from the hallway, then a blood trail going towards the door, that’s when I saw her half-unconscious already,” I said, whispering the last parts of my statements because I suddenly remembered what happened earlier. A part of me blamed myself. If I only noticed sooner, If I only acted faster I might have saved the girl. “Miss Levesque,” “Miss Levesque!” “Wha-what?” I was broken from my trance. I didn’t know my mind was already drifting away from the situation. “Please focus Miss Levesque, the information you provide will help solve this case.” Kyros said calmly, “This will be of great help to the family.” I took in a deep breath and nodded. “I’m sorry,” I apologized. Kyros nodded and we carried on with the investigation. “What do you think did this?” another asked. I fell silent for a short while. There were three big slashes on her chest, it was obvious that it was an attempt to attack. “I wasn’t sure about the wound marks,” I lied. “but she told me that she was being chased, she was scared and told me she was about to be eaten.” Whispers started to spread in the council room. They were discussing with each other. “Is this a work of a monster hybrid?” one human member asked. “ The marks on her body are surely made by claws, and the victim said that she was about to be eaten.” “That’s true,” another agreed “All we have to do now is look for hybrids that have the ability to do this and we shall start the proper investigation with the officials from thereon.” “Please stop turning theories into conclusions. The healers have not yet disclosed information about the topic. Maybe the executioner girl saw it wrong.” A hybrid said. “She is Eva Levesque,” corrected Kyros. “Everybody settles down,” Kyros said. With that statement, everybody stopped talking and whispering. I eyed the girl who said that I saw wrong, I might have doubted myself if I saw it wrong but I was sure about it. He placed a finger at the edge of the table and slowly dragged it across the edge. It was a habit he was fond of doing when he was thinking. “The facts stated here all point to a hybrid with claws and is known to feast on human flesh,” he stated, “but the wound marks in fact say otherwise.” An assistant handed him an envelope which he presented on the table. “These documents say that the wound marks are too clean for it to be slashed by claws. The wounds are either made from sword blades or hybrids that have extremely thin and sharp claws,” he said. Whispers started again. Never-ending discussions of whether the killer was a human or a hybrid. Nobody in this room truly cared about the girl who died. They only wanted to know who killed her, a human or a hybrid. I started to breathe heavily and clenched my fists. Both humans and hybrids alike are selfish people who only care about their reputation. Finding whether it was human or hybrid was more important than finding out why she was killed and why she had to suffer a painful death. -- The meeting was adjourned with the promise of confidentiality. That everything that was discussed in the council room will remain confidential between the people who were there. As soon as the meeting ended, everyone started to exit one by one when Kyros asked me to stay. When everyone left, he walked towards me and sat at the chair near me. “It was hard for you to be here,” he asked softly. I hear the trace of worry and concern from his voice. Unable to answer, I only looked down fiddle with my fingers. “You knew that it wasn’t a monster’s claws,” he said, “why did you lie?” I looked up. He saw through my lie. “Come on, Eva. We’ve been friends for decades now, I know you like the palm of my hands.” He said “were you afraid that your words will be the reason that the humans and hybrids will point fingers?” I bit my lip and looked away. I’ve known Kyros for as long as I’ve known Irene, Helle, and Sigrid. We were a group together and spent our childhood together. Kyros had to move away on the last year of middle school to reunite as schoolmates and him as the student council president despite being both freshmen. “The one who did this wants to start a fight between humans and hybrids in this school. The more people who turn their back on each other, the more fights will happen. You should prevent that from happening Kyros, I don’t want what happened in the past to happen again.” I said worriedly, clenching both of my hands for comfort. I didn’t understand why I’m so scared of what’s going to happen. I feel like I’ve experienced that situation before. I felt a knot in my stomach because I was too nervous about what’s going to happen. “Don’t worry Eva, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that’s not going to happen, I promise you,” he said, assuring me. “For now, go back to the dorm and take a rest, everything must be scary and confusing for you at the moment.” After that talk, he escorted me to the school dorm where Irene, Helle, and Sigrid were waiting. Irene was standing with her arms crossed while Helle was standing properly next to her. Sigrid was leaning against the large pillar at the entrance of the dorm. “Hey,” Sigrid came near us as soon as he saw us. “Everything okay?” he asked. I nodded and looked at Kyros. “Thanks for bringing me here,” I told him. He smiled and scratched the back of his head. “No biggie, I might’ve put our friend into a shock at the council but it’s nothing that a strong girl like her can’t take.” He jokingly said. “Thanks, Kyros,” Sigrid thanked him and nodded. Irene immediately went to me and gave me a hug. “You alright?” she asked concerned, “With what they said in the classroom and the things that happened, everything must be hard for you right now isn’t it?” she asked full of concern, still not letting go from the hug. I wanted to tear up and cry but that would be too embarrassing. That’s why I just gave a tight hug back, wanting to feel the comfort and warmth from it. “Why? What happened in the classroom?” Sigrid and Kyros asked in chorus . “A bunch of girls got into a fight and involved Eva in it saying that its’ her job as an executioner to kill monsters and a human girl said that she was useless,” Helle answered quickly without any hesitation. I just hid my face in the hug, I didn’t want to be reminded of that. “It was fine, she was just emotional,” I told them, exhausted. “I just want to rest right now,” I said, tears starting to swell up. I miss my dad. -- END
