The Banished Luna

Silence. The word had fallen from Damon’s lips like a curse, and the world itself seemed to recoil. For a heartbeat, the courtyard was utterly still, as if the Moon Goddess herself held her breath. Then whispers erupted—sharp, cruel, and cutting through Aria like knives. “He rejected her?” “Impossible. They’re fated!” “The Alpha must have his reasons…” “No one rejects the Luna on her crowning night.” Aria’s vision blurred. The crown in the Elder’s hands trembled as though it, too, could not believe what had just happened. Her chest heaved, air burning in her lungs, but no breath could steady her. She looked at Damon—her Damon—searching desperately for a flicker of warmth, for a sign that this was some terrible mistake. But his golden eyes were steel. “Why?” The single word scraped out of her throat, weak, fragile, desperate. Damon did not soften. His voice carried, cold and final, echoing off the stone walls. “You are not fit to be my Luna. You are weak, Aria. Too soft-hearted. Too fragile. The Moonstone Pack needs strength, not sentiment.” Gasps again, sharper this time. Someone muttered, “Weak?” Another scoffed, “She’s always been too gentle.” Aria’s heart cracked. His words were not just rejection—they were public execution. He was tearing her down before her entire pack, stripping her of dignity, of purpose, of worth. “I loved you,” she whispered, voice shaking. Damon’s jaw clenched, a muscle twitching. For the briefest flicker, pain crossed his eyes, but it vanished as quickly as it came. He straightened, projecting the ruthless Alpha his pack expected. “Love is not enough,” he said. Aria staggered back as if struck. Lila rushed forward, grabbing her arm. “Aria, don’t listen—” But the Elder cut in, his gravelly voice thunderous. “Alpha Damon, do you understand what you have done? Rejecting your fated mate is a curse upon the bond. A pain that wounds not only you, but her!” Damon didn’t flinch. “I understand.” The Elder’s expression was grim, but he stepped aside, powerless to intervene. The bond was sacred, but no one—not even the Goddess’ chosen—could force acceptance. Pain seared through Aria’s chest, a burning tear that ripped down her very soul. The mate bond twisted violently, unraveling. She gasped, clutching at her heart, feeling it splinter in two. It was as if invisible claws were raking through her body, shredding the silver thread that had once tied her to Damon. Lila wrapped her arms around her, steadying her trembling frame. “Don’t you dare fall, Aria. Don’t you let them see you fall.” Aria blinked back tears, forcing her spine to straighten. If Damon wanted to call her weak, she would not prove him right. She swallowed the scream clawing at her throat, lifted her chin, and stared directly at the man who had destroyed her. “You may reject me,” she said, voice trembling but loud enough for all to hear. “But I will never forgive you.” A ripple of shock passed through the crowd. Wolves leaned closer, whispering, startled by her defiance. Damon’s eyes darkened, but he said nothing. The Elder lowered the crown, his face heavy with sorrow. “So it is done.” He turned to the pack. “There will be no Luna tonight.” The words rang out like a death sentence. Aria’s chest constricted. No Luna. No mate. No home. The crowd shifted uneasily. Some looked at her with pity, others with disdain. A few—wolves she had grown up with, laughed with, trained with—now turned their backs as though she were already gone. Lila hissed, “Cowards, all of them.” But Aria barely heard her. She was watching Damon. Even now, some traitorous part of her prayed he would take it back, that he would step forward, gather her in his arms, tell her it was a mistake. Instead, he gave the order that sealed her fate. “Aria Stone is no longer of this pack.” His voice was iron. “Effective immediately, she is banished from Moonstone territory.” Her breath caught. “B-banished?” The courtyard erupted. Some wolves nodded grimly, others protested. “Banishing her? After all she’s given—” “She saved the pups in last winter’s storm!” “She’s still the fated mate—” “She’s not his mate anymore.” Aria’s vision tunneled. She had expected pain, heartbreak, humiliation. But not exile. He wasn’t just rejecting her—he was erasing her. “Damon, please—” The Alpha’s eyes blazed, his command reverberating with the power of his wolf. “Leave, Aria. Before dawn, or be hunted as a rogue.” Her body went numb. The man she had loved more than life, the Alpha she had believed in, had turned her into nothing in a single night. Lila snarled, “You bastard! You’ll regret this—” Guards closed in. Damon raised his hand. “See them out.” The Elder stepped forward, voice heavy with warning. “Alpha, the Goddess will not bless such cruelty.” But Damon didn’t waver. His gaze locked on Aria’s one last time. Something flickered there—regret, longing, or guilt—but it was buried beneath the weight of his pride. Aria tore herself from Lila’s grip and stood tall, though her legs trembled. Her heart was ashes, her soul bleeding, but she would not crawl. Not for him. “If weakness is what you see,” she said coldly, “then you’ve never truly known me.” Gasps rippled. For a heartbeat, Damon faltered. But then he turned his back to her, sealing the end. The guards stepped closer, but Aria raised her hand. “Don’t touch me. I will leave on my own.” Lila clung to her, tears streaming. “We can’t stay. They’ll follow through, Aria.” “I know,” Aria whispered, her throat raw. “But I won’t give them the satisfaction of watching me beg.” With every step she took toward the gates, whispers followed. Some sympathetic. Most cruel. “Banished…” “Rejected…” “She’ll never survive as a rogue.” But Aria didn’t falter. She kept her head high until the gates loomed ahead. Her vision blurred with unshed tears, but she refused to let them fall. She would not break in front of them. When the gates creaked open, the cold night air hit her like a slap. Beyond lay the endless dark forest, vast and merciless. Lila grasped her hand, her voice trembling. “We’ll find somewhere else, Aria. You’re not alone.” Aria nodded numbly, though her heart whispered otherwise. Alone. Rejected. Banished. She took her first step into exile. Behind her, the gates slammed shut with a finality that echoed through her bones. And though she walked into the night, a single vow burned in her chest, brighter than the pain. I will never return to you, Damon. And if I do… it will be as someone you cannot destroy. Aria leaves the pack in disgrace, banished and heartbroken, but with a fiery vow that sets the stage for her rebirth and eventual second chance.
