Chapter seven

713 Words
Daniel stared at the envelope on his kitchen table as though it might catch fire. It was glossy black, with sharp and deliberate edges, sealed with the Madison crest pressed in silver wax. His fingers tingled just touching it. Months had passed since he had walked away from Victoria’s world, but here she was again, seeping back into his life like a shadow that refused to fade. He told himself not to open it. Walk away. Burn it. Throw it out with the trash. But curiosity—it was always curiosity that got him into trouble—gnawed at him until his hands betrayed him. He broke the seal. Inside was a single ivory card, smooth and scented faintly of jasmine, her signature perfume. The message was handwritten, her script elegant, deliberate, commanding. Did you really think you could escape me? His chest tightened. It wasn’t a threat. It was worse—it was a promise. Daniel sank into his chair, running a hand through his hair. Since leaving Madison Enterprises, he had been living quietly. Small freelance projects here and there, just enough to cover rent. No glitz, no galas, no Victoria. He thought he was free. Yet the envelope reminded him of an uncomfortable truth, men like him didn’t just walk away from women like her. The phone buzzed, startling him. A message from an unknown number lit up the screen. Tomorrow. Midnight. The pier. Come alone. Daniel’s pulse thumped in his ears. The pier? Midnight? His first instinct was to ignore it, but the pull was magnetic. She knew exactly how to reel him back. By the next evening, he was pacing his apartment, torn between common sense and desire. He wanted to be free, to move on, but another part of him—the reckless, restless part—longed to see her again. To demand answers. To finally end whatever invisible thread still tied them together. At 11:30 p.m., he gave in. The pier was deserted, the Hudson’s black water rippling under a silver moon. Fog curled low, wrapping around the wooden beams like something alive. Daniel stuffed his hands into his coat pockets, scanning the shadows. Then he saw her. Victoria emerged as if the darkness itself had shaped her. Dressed in a tailored black coat, her heels clicked sharply against the boards. She hadn’t changed—still regal, untouchable, her beauty sharp enough to wound. Daniel, she said, her voice velvet, cool. You came. He forced a laugh, though his chest was tight. You didn’t exactly give me much choice. She smiled faintly, tilting her head. You always had a choice. You just never knew how to make the right one. Is that what this is about? he snapped. Dragging me back into your world because you can’t stand the idea that someone escaped you? Victoria’s eyes glittered, unreadable. No one escapes me. Not really. But you— She stepped closer, her perfume wrapping around him like a chain. You intrigue me, Daniel. You left. And yet, here you are again. He swallowed hard, his resolve weakening under her gaze. What do you want from me? Not what, she said softly, but who. You. The words hung in the night air, heavy and intoxicating. Daniel shook his head. No. I won’t be your pawn again. Whatever game you’re playing, leave me out of it. But even as he spoke, he knew the truth: he was already back in her game. He always had been. Victoria leaned in, her lips almost brushing his ear. This isn’t a game anymore, Daniel. It’s war. And you’re already on the board. A shiver ran down his spine. Before he could respond, headlights flared at the far end of the pier. A sleek black car pulled up, doors opening in perfect synchronicity. Two men in tailored suits stepped out, their presence radiating quiet menace. Victoria’s expression didn’t change. She simply slipped her arm through Daniel’s, as if they were nothing more than lovers taking a midnight stroll. Come, she whispered. It’s time you finally understood what it means to be mine. And just like that, Daniel knew whatever life he thought he had built for himself was over. He was being pulled back into her world, whether he wanted it or not.
