Chapter three

669 Words
The office was nearly empty by the time Daniel shut his laptop. The city outside glowed in a thousand flickering lights, Manhattan buzzing even at midnight. He rubbed his temples, his sketches for the Madison Tower scattered across the desk like broken puzzle pieces. Still here? The voice came from the doorway. Victoria leaned against the frame, her black silk blouse catching the light. Unlike everyone else in the building, she didn’t look tired at midnight—she looked sharper, almost dangerous. Yes, Daniel said quickly, straightening. I wanted to refine the curve structure on the upper floors. The design— She cut him off with a raised hand as she walked in. You don’t have to explain. Ambition doesn’t apologize. Her heels clicked against the polished floor as she came closer, scanning the sketches. She leaned over the desk, her perfume, something dark and intoxicating, curling into the air between them. You think differently, she murmured, tracing one of his lines with a red-lacquered nail. Everyone else gives me boxes. You provide me with something alive. Daniel’s throat tightened. That’s… what I was trying for. Her gaze flicked to his, sharp and unblinking. For a moment, neither spoke. The silence stretched, filled only by the hum of the city beyond the glass. Then, almost casually, she rested her hand on his arm. Just for a second—but enough to send a current through him. Don’t stop, she said softly. The moment you stop surprising me, you’re finished. When she pulled back, Daniel felt the absence like a burn. The next morning, whispers followed him through the office. Conversations cut off when he entered the break room. Two colleagues laughed behind their hands as he passed. The golden boy, one muttered just loud enough for him to hear. He tried to brush it off, but by lunchtime, it was everywhere. The rumors weren’t just about his work; they were about Victoria—about late nights in her office, about what kind of extra assignments he was being given. That evening, Erica, Victoria’s assistant, cornered him near the elevators. Piece of advice, Cole, she said coolly. Don’t get comfortable. You’re not the first man she’s… taken an interest in. And you won’t be the last. Daniel bristled. It’s not like that. Her smirk said she didn’t believe him. Then, I suppose you have nothing to worry about. But he did worry. Not just about the rumors—but about the truth buried inside them. Because deep down, he couldn’t deny that Victoria was pulling him closer. That night, he stayed late again, more to prove something to himself than to her. When the building finally emptied, Victoria appeared once more, this time with two glasses of wine in hand. She placed one on his desk without asking. You’ve been here three weeks, she said, sipping hers. Most people would’ve burned out by now. Yet you thrive. I want to succeed, Daniel said, his voice firmer than he expected. Her lips curved. Good. Because success requires sacrifice, sleep, and relationships. Even reputation. She leaned back in her chair, studying him. “Are you prepared for that? Daniel hesitated, but then nodded. Yes. For the first time, she smiled—genuinely. It made her look softer, almost human. Almost. Then she set her glass down. There’s a gala Saturday night—black tie. You’ll accompany me. His brows lifted. Me? Don’t look so surprised. You’ll be helpful. She paused, her eyes glinting. And I prefer helpful people close. He swallowed. But… won’t people talk? Her smile sharpened again, the softness gone. Let them. Power isn’t about avoiding whispers. It’s about owning them. She rose, her heels clicking like punctuation. Get a tuxedo, I’ll send the car. With that, she left, leaving him staring after her, heart pounding. Daniel sat back, staring at his reflection in the darkened window. He should have felt triumphant. Instead, unease gnawed at him. Because whatever had just happened, it wasn’t an invitation. It was a command.
