Chapter 24

1938 Words
Inside a high-rise apartment in north Hollywood, high school student Daisy Bell looked at the thousands of unread messages in the forum's speakers' section and proceeded to report each and every one of those cursing personal attacks on anyone who tried to discredit Margo in front of her. On the forums, Margaret Ajani was a hot topic, but it had little to do with the Daniel Day-Lewis dumping scandal, and certainly wasn't one of those two-girls-for-one-guy Hollywood stories of old. --It's because of all the elite, the super-elite, who've taken sides in favor of Ajani. This is crazy, can you believe that Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne are on the same side? Americans used to think there was no way these two super-rich men would stop bickering before the end of the world. The chat area was so heated that the forum network was paralyzed, and the line "In Lewis, Ajani is as low as a beggar" was a finalist for Funny Quote of the Year. Not long ago, because of the Sun newspaper that report, follow the trend of cursing Ajani's public, as if by a direct slap, angry turn to satirize Lewis and his crazy public relations. Fans of Lewis and his anonymous PR team have been busy rebutting the Oscar winner's accusations in forums, and even playing another game. -- "Instead of satirizing the real acting actor, why don't you all just wonder who the lady's real boyfriend is, I'm afraid they all think they're falling in love?" - "Sorry, but in his latest statement, Margo's agent Brian Lord makes it clear that Margo is in a relationship window and that the men who are rebutting the false reports on her behalf are just close friends and partners." -- "Heh, what about that Tony Stark quote?" -- "Geez, didn't anyone pay attention to Bruce Wayne's statement, but he cleared it up for Margo early on." -- "Is it weird for a pretty girl to have a few avid followers?" -- "Just wait and see, Margaret the stupid b***h won't end well!" Daisy Bell saw that this over-the-top message had been reported several times. -- "Some people can be hilarious, trying to label others as philandering and promiscuous when they can't protect themselves." -- "The man who dumps his old love and cheats on him is the victim? Sent a fax saying they broke up before they got married?" -- "I'm not in the mood to pay attention to a certain PR king movie star anymore, I just want to know which gentleman will succeed in getting to the top and sitting on the throne of the rightful boyfriend?" In the forum, the scolding wars started by various fans and passers-by were still endless, and there were also threads floating around counting who exactly was Margaret's rightful boyfriend, with each gentleman having their own supporters, vaguely setting off a cp battle. In recent days, almost every red-hot forum post has been related to Margaret, but she's living an extremely low-key real life. Aside from continuing to sweep the awards season, traveling to all the major outposts of the awards to take the stage and receive her award, she spends almost every day secluded in her well-kept Beverly Hills mansion. She didn't personally step in and start a name-calling war with Lewis and his PR team over the inaccurate story, but during her several days of seclusion, Lewis was fretting and in the midst of a very bad time - the "Taking a movie just to win an award? Daniel Day-Lewis is incredibly talented, but of questionable character." --The Hollywood Reporter "Drug-fighting and burglary? Daniel Day-Lewis underwent psychiatric treatment for too many drugs as a teenager." --Variety "Daniel Day-Lewis uncle calls nephew wildly rude - 'His morals are incarcerated'" - Los Angeles Daily News "Lewis was revealed to have violated legal Oscar lobbying rules years ago by personally sending letters to Academy judges." --San Francisco Chronicle While Daniel Day-Lewis is besieged by reporters and his public relations team almost wants to jump into the sea en masse to kill themselves, Margaret is in Paris, France, in order to attend the 23rd César Awards for French Cinema. The situation in Paris in recent days is not exactly smooth, as the city has been hit by occasional bombings since 1995 due to the rampage of terrorist organizations. The French police have dispatched thousands of officers to reinforce security at metro stations, train stations, airports and other public places. But a few days ago, France was rocked by a terrorist bombing in a St. Michel light rail station that killed 12 people and injured nearly 200 others. Then the French publisher of The Satanic Verses, Inc. was attacked by a bomb and the country was in an uproar. Since 1988, when Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses was published in the United Kingdom, the book's mockery of the Prophet Muhammad has enraged Muslims to take to the streets and burn books, which in turn has led to the placing of bounties on the booksellers and translators. The author, Rushdie, was hunted down by Iran's spiritual leader, Khomeini, who issued an "Islamic order" to kill him. To date, many of the translators and publishers of The Satanic Verses have been attacked, injured or even killed. On July 3, 1991, the translator of the Italian edition was seriously wounded in an assassination attempt in Milan. On July 11, 1991, the Japanese translator, Ichi Igarashi, was assassinated and his body was found in the office of Tsukuba University. On July 2, 1993, the Turkish version of the translation, the hotel where he was staying in Sivas, Turkey, was set on fire by a mob, killing 37 people. In October 1993, a Norwegian publisher was shot three times in Oslo but survived. Never in the history of publishing has a book claimed so many lives, ignited such a major international crisis, and had so many bombs thrown at bookstores for the sake of one book, as The Satanic Verses. Since 1988, when it came out in Britain, it has caused over sixty deaths and hundreds of injuries. Unlike the era and situation in The Story of Adele Hugo, the New World of America has been a lot safer lately, while Paris is under the suspicion of a terrorist attack. For Ajani's not-so-safe trip to France, Brian Lord has tried to block it, but apparently without success. Perhaps he underestimated the courage and commitment of this nineteen-year-old French girl, no less than men. César Award as the highest honor of the French film, known as the "French Oscars", February 28, the luxurious Empire Theatre, is holding a powerful awards ceremony. Prior to 1994, the live broadcast of the César Awards ceremony was held by France Télévision 2 for 18 years. After that year, the ceremony was broadcast live by Cannes TV, which has always been highly respected by the French. This year, the number of viewers is even more crazy, in the red carpet before the ceremony began live, it has already broken the average ratings of the previous session. Ajani even reached a new high when she stepped onto the red carpet in a classic burgundy gown. With a month-long fermentation, the news of what happened between the former couple, Ajani and Lewis, had long traveled from the New World of America to the old empire of France. -What the hell? An obnoxious Englishman runs across the ocean to find an American with no substance and has the audacity to denigrate our Rose of France? Elegant and self-possessed Frenchmen play a good hand to relocate their anger, for Lewis, an Englishman, the daily comment is that he can't cook, can't dress, doesn't know music, doesn't have a refined look, and the Englishmen are really all fools. The British man who lies: no, Lewis has Irish blood, Great Britain is innocent! Director Truffaut is sitting next to Adjani at the César Awards, "Margot, no one is in your league today." For movie awards shows, which are basically equated with splitting pork, it's rare that they actually keep the winners hidden from the winners, and the Césars are clearly not among that tiny minority. A few days earlier, Margaret had known that she was going to win. The live camera lens moved around and was now including the cast of The Story of Adele Hugo in the live images. Marguerite smiled gracefully, and the female cameraman behind the camera, all but felt that she had fallen in love for a moment. "Shortlisted for Best Actress at the 23rd César Awards are-" "Ariane Ascaride for Love Doesn't Strike." "Sabine Azema, 'French Chanson'." "Mary Gillian's Ambition for Revenge." "Margaret Ajani, The Story of Adele Hugo." "Sandrine Guibelin, The Seventh Heaven." "And the winner of Best Actress is--" The guest of honor on the stage lowered his voice without directly naming the winner, "She has the face of an angel pure and untouched by a trace of dust, and yet she renders madness without missing a beat; and only this face, the most beautiful in Europe, deserves the accolade of ravishing, she is a French woman, a French woman blessed with heaven." "Her knitted brows, whether mad or noble, are perfect. She has shown us what it is to be beautiful and to act, and she will be the representative of French cinema, and the name will go down in history--" "Marguerite Adjani." "Wow..." applause erupted from the stage, and a number of young people squealed out in front of the awards ceremony's live TV. The film, The Story of Adele Hugo, was indeed very much to the liking of the French film industry, and received unanimous praise during its point-of-view screenings, and the award presentation did not even involve PR gaming, but rather was due to the fact that Ajani's exceptional acting was simply not to be ignored. Her performance is unimpeachable and a treasure for a whole host of independent filmmakers. Ajani stepped onto the stage holding the exquisitely shaped César Trophy, designed for the César Awards by renowned French sculptor César Baldassini. Her figure is graceful and charming as hell, and the guests on stage look at their French rose, feeling more and more that Ajani's post-film title is well deserved. "This is an incredible blessing, thank you Director Truffaut and my wonderful co-star Jude Law, you made this great movie." She said a round of names of the crew, then her tone changed - the Ajani actually recited The Satanic Verses on stage as a show of solidarity with the Parisians who were injured by the explosions as a result of the publication of this work. The audience watching the César Awards ceremony in front of the TV was shocked by the inner depths she displayed, and the audacity that is often hard to match. Her white skin and blue eyes, her straight back, her determination and her pride, made everyone in the audience and in front of the TV stand in awe of her. At this prestigious ceremony, there was only this great actress, the embodiment of the French spirit, in front of us. On this night, countless Frenchmen were overwhelmed by Ajani's extraordinary power, and the whole of Paris fawned over her. If, right now, you ask any French filmmaker-- Who will be the most iconic and greatest French actress at the end of the 20th century? Almost everyone, without hesitation, would name Marguerite Adjani. Whether in the sixteenth century, or at the end of the twentieth century, the French will eventually be proud to have such a colorful flower blooming on their soil.
