The cold wind slapped their faces as the group emerged from the cursed ruins. The sun was beginning to dip toward the west, and the sky turned a deep orange. Dea led the way, though her steps seemed heavy after the earlier fight.
"Whatever that was at the altar, we need to be cautious," Priya said, glancing at Vin. "That was clearly something we don't fully understand."
Vin nodded, his mind still troubled by the flash of light from the symbol on the altar. What did it have to do with him? And why were the primitive guards so afraid of that light?
Kwame, walking behind them, kept his eyes on the surroundings. "We need to find a place to rest. The darkness here could bring even more danger."
They found a gap in the rocky slope, large enough to shelter them but hidden from view. The night felt quieter than usual, and despite starting a small fire, the atmosphere remained tense.
Dea pulled out her worn map and showed it to the group. "We're close to the Illusion Peak. But before we get there, we need to pass through a valley called the 'Valley of Shadows.'"
"Valley of Shadows?" Kwame asked. "Sounds like a place I want to avoid."
"Legend says the valley is inhabited by the 'Shadows of Voran,' entities that only appear at night to protect the secrets of this mountain," Dea explained.
Vin narrowed his eyes. "Shadows of Voran? Are they like the guards who attacked us in the ruins?"
Dea shook her head. "They're different. The guards were human, though corrupted by Voran's power. The Shadows of Voran are something else. They're not physical beings but pure energy that can't be fought in the usual way."
The night grew late. They shared the meager food Kwame had foraged—small fruits and edible roots. But the fatigue and worry weighed heavily on them, and the silence between them grew uncomfortable.
As everyone settled to rest, Vin stayed awake, his eyes fixed on the darkness outside. There was something inside him that made it hard to sleep.
"Vin," Dea's voice broke the silence.
Vin turned to see Dea sitting near the small fire. "Can't sleep either?"
Dea nodded slightly. "There's something about this mountain... I feel like we're being watched."
Vin reached for a wooden staff beside him, staying alert. "I feel it too. And I think it's more than just paranoia."
Suddenly, their fire flickered, as if a strong wind had just passed through. But there was no wind. Strange sounds began to rise from the valley below them—murmurs, indistinct whispers.
Priya and Kwame instantly woke, sensing something was wrong.
"What is that?" Kwame asked, readying his weapon.
Dea bit her lip. "The Shadows of Voran. They're coming."
Dark fog began to rise from the valley, slowly creeping toward them. Within the fog, shadows moved, faintly humanoid but without facial features. They were mere dark silhouettes with glowing red eyes.
"We need to move!" Priya shouted.
"No time," Vin responded. "We have to fight them here."
The first shadow attacked with incredible speed, rushing at Kwame. He tried to strike it with his staff, but the staff passed through the shadow's body without effect. The shadow hit him, sending him stumbling back with strange burn marks on his arm.
"What is this?" Kwame screamed in pain.
"Normal weapons won't work!" Dea yelled. "We need light!"
Vin recalled the glowing symbol on the altar. He grabbed a large stone nearby and held it near the fire, hoping to create a weapon bright enough to fight the shadows.
When the next shadow attacked, Vin swung the stone, and the light from the fire seemed to force the shadow to retreat.
"It's working!" Vin shouted. "We need to use light!"
Dea quickly grabbed one of the torches they'd made earlier and lit it. Priya and Kwame followed suit, each holding a torch.
The shadows attacked again, but this time, they fought back with the torchlight. Every time the light touched a shadow, it shrieked with a horrible sound and vanished into the fog.
The battle was fierce. Though the torchlight provided some protection, the number of shadows continued to increase.
"We can't hold them off forever!" Priya shouted.
"To higher ground!" Vin ordered. "We need to get out of this fog!"
With great effort, they climbed the large rocks to higher ground. The shadows pursued them, but the light from their torches was enough to keep them at bay. After some time, they reached the top of a hill, where the fog couldn't reach them.
The group was panting, their bodies covered in sweat and injuries. But they had survived—for now.
Dea looked down at the valley below, where the shadows gathered, staring up at them with their red eyes.
"They won't stop until we leave this mountain," she said, her voice filled with certainty.
Vin clenched his fist. "Then we'll keep moving forward. No matter what they throw at us."
At the top of the hill, they finally saw Illusion Peak in the distance. The place looked unreal, with strange light shining from its peak. But behind its beauty, they knew there was even greater danger waiting.
"This isn't over," Vin said, looking ahead. "This is just the beginning."

The night grew late, and the eerie thick fog continued to creep closer. The group stood atop a hill, breathless after the battle with the shadows that emerged from the Valley of Shadows. The cold wind bit at them, and the atmosphere around them felt heavier, as though the mountain was watching them.
Vin, standing at the forefront, gazed down into the valley. The shadows moved slowly within the fog, like snakes slithering, exuding an unsettling aura. Although they had managed to escape for the moment, the feeling of danger still hung over them.
"This is only the beginning," Vin muttered, leaning his back against a large stone. "Voran wants something from us."
Dea, standing beside him, stared anxiously at the valley. "I feel like we've already walked right into its trap. The longer we stay here, the stronger its influence over us becomes."
Priya shivered behind them. "Why can't we rest for a moment? We've been running all day."
Kwame, more reserved, kept his eyes fixed on the valley, focused. "We can't do anything by hiding. We have to keep moving—up to the peak. It's the only way out."
Vin nodded, his gaze never leaving the valley. "We must persevere. If we stop, we'll be easier targets. We can't let the fog reach us again."
As they began to move again, the atmosphere grew more suffocating. The fog seemed to do more than obscure the world around them; it was affecting their minds. Vin felt more tethered to the mountain, as if a voice were calling to him from deep within the earth.

After hours of climbing, the path becoming steeper, they finally reached the base of the valley. The dense fog surrounding them made everything feel alien and unreachable, as if the world beyond had vanished. They walked cautiously, each step feeling like a battle against gravity. Silence enveloped them, only the sound of their footsteps echoing against the large stones scattered along the path.
Vin's heart raced. The closer they got to the valley's center, the more something felt wrong. The valley felt like an endless maze, a place where logic and time seemed distorted.
"They're coming again," Dea whispered.
Vin turned and peered into the fog. Figures moved behind the thick white veil, more numerous than before. But this time, they were not the same shadows as earlier. These were more tangible, more solid—like living creatures made from the fog itself. They walked upright, slowly approaching the group.
Kwame gripped his staff tightly, his face tense. "What are they? Why aren’t they attacking us like before?"
"This is worse than before," Dea replied, her face pale. "These aren’t just physical beings—they’re the stronger Shadows of Voran. They can influence our minds."
Vin tried to steady himself, but the pressure from all sides made his thoughts race. "Stay calm, we have to fight smart. Don’t let them get too close."
The first shadow that appeared was a tall figure resembling a human, but its face had no detail. It was merely a black silhouette with glowing red eyes that emitted light. Its footsteps sounded like the rustling of the fog itself.
The figure stopped a few steps away from them, its empty gaze locked onto them, full of menace.
"Who are you?" Vin shouted, his voice echoing through the silent valley.
The shadow did not answer. Instead, its body began to soften, forming a swirl of fog that enveloped its form. Then, a whispering voice emerged—not from the creature itself, but from the fog surrounding them.
"Voran sees you," the voice hissed, cutting through the silence. "You are part of an inevitable fate."
Vin took a deep breath, feeling something creeping into his mind. Every word that was spoken felt like threads tying him down, pulling him deeper into the darkness of the valley.
Kwame moved quickly, striking the shadow with his staff. The staff made contact with the foggy body, but it didn’t penetrate. Instead, the shadow expanded, enveloping the staff with tremendous force, sending Kwame tumbling backward.
Priya ran to help, but a second shadow appeared, faster than the first. This one charged through the fog, kicking Priya to the ground.
"We’ll never be free of this," Dea muttered, her anxiety growing. "Voran really controls this place."
Vin felt himself losing control. Every whisper in the fog made his thoughts more cloudy, as if they weren’t just fighting physical beings but battling against a destiny that had already been written.
"They can’t control us!" Vin shouted, trying to shake off the growing influence.
With all his might, Vin squeezed his eyes shut, focusing on the light from the torch they carried. The light provided some protection, slowly pushing back the fog that began to encircle him. But the more he resisted, the stronger the fog became.
The shadows attacked once more. This time, they didn’t just strike physically; they also sought to invade the minds of each member of the group. Vin felt an increasing pressure, as if an invisible force was trying to control his body and mind.
Dea, nearly collapsing, bit her lip. "Vin, we can’t let this continue! We have to stop them!"
Vin fought to stay conscious. In his agitation, he searched for a way to sever the connection between himself and the fog. Finally, he decided to use the stone from the altar he had found earlier.
He reached for the stone, gripped it tightly, and aimed it at the first shadow. A blinding light burst from the stone, far stronger than before. The shadow screamed, its body trembling violently, before it shattered into fog that dissipated into the air.
"Over here!" Vin shouted, his voice firm. "Use the light to fight them!"
With newfound confidence, the group fought back, using the light to push back the Shadows of Voran one by one. The fog retreated, but they knew this was only a temporary victory.
As the fog began to lift, they were left in a chilling silence. They knew the threat was far from over. Something far greater awaited them at the Illusion Peak.
