Chapter 4: Guiding Light

1366 Words
Outside the emergency room, Lillian looked apologetically at Anna. Anna appeared extremely angry. She had never encountered such a situation before, yet today Lillian had managed to get her young master into this predicament. Even though her young master liked her, Anna found it difficult to forgive Lillian easily. Lillian felt that she had been overwhelmed by things recently. Nothing seemed to go smoothly, not even being with the one she loved. As she waited for the doors of the emergency room to open, Owen was wheeled out on a stretcher. Anna remained silently angry at Lillian. Quietly, Lillian turned away. She felt a sense of loss as she walked down the street. Was she experiencing a streak of bad luck recently, causing Owen to be affected by it as well? After wandering for a while, Lillian decided she needed to find an astrologer to have her fortune read and perhaps find a way to break this streak of bad luck. She was feeling uncomfortable living like this. The underground street was the birthplace of the Los Angeles underworld, a place teeming with all sorts of characters, especially vibrant during the night market. Lillian attracted numerous glances as soon as she stepped onto the street, but she was used to the fervent and admiring gazes. She furrowed her brow slightly, then walked into a shop. With the shopkeeper mesmerized by her presence, she grabbed a stylish hat and sunglasses, left some money, and walked out, feeling a bit more comfortable as she continued on her way. In order to find a genuine astrologer, not just a charlatan, Lillian kept wandering around here. An astrologer sat in the corner of the street, he was about thirty-something years old, wearing a dirty big hat, and though his clothes were somewhat worn, they were still neat. There was a purple star chart spread out on the table. When he saw Lillian, his expression changed slightly, then he shook his head and was about to turn away. Lillian felt very strange, so she quickly caught up and blocked the astrologer's path: "Why do you want to leave after seeing me?" Could it be that she has become so unlucky recently? Even an astrologer wants to escape upon seeing her. The astrologer looked at Lillian and said, "Young lady, I am the astrologer Alberto. I came here seeking some kind of omen, and when I saw you, I sensed a desolate aura around you, afraid that you might be in trouble." Upon hearing these words, Lillian's eyes lit up, and she said to Alberto, "Master, could you please tell my fortune and dispel my troubles?" With that, she emptied all the miscellaneous one thousand dollars from her wallet into Alberto's purple pocket. Alberto looked at the money in his pocket, closed his eyes, and said, "I can look at your destiny for you, but I cannot guarantee that I can relieve you of your sins." Lillian sat down in front of the stall, took off her hat and sunglasses, and said, "To be honest, my family background is quite privileged, but when I was eight years old, I got lost in the deep mountains and was carried away by an animal. I saw some extremely unpleasant scenes, and ever since then, nightmares have haunted me. After receiving intermittent treatment from a psychologist for two to three years, things finally started to improve. In addition to my mother's meticulous care and the protection of those around me, life has been relatively good. But two years ago, my mother was in a car accident and became a vegetable. I haven't been in a good mood since then, especially with my father constantly arranging blind dates for me. My life has been a mess, especially recently, when the nightmares that used to bother me for a long time have started to return frequently. I've been worried that I might be heading for big trouble. Please advise me, Master." She was very sincere, her crystal-like eyes blinking as she looked at Alberto, her expression full of devout curiosity. Her long hair cascaded down like seaweed, and her naturally moist lips were pursed, making her skin appear even more delicate. Alberto looked at Lillian for a while before speaking quietly, "Young lady, your face is extraordinary, and you have your own blessings. You should take a chance on fate." Just as Lillian was pondering the meaning behind Alberto's words, she realized that he had turned and walked away, as if afraid of causing trouble. Lillian hurriedly caught up and said, "Master, please don't leave yet. Can you take me as your apprentice?" Alberto's pace quickened after Lillian's words. As Lillian chased after him, she eventually lost sight of him. Was he really a master? Looking around, she couldn't find Alberto anywhere among the people enjoying themselves. She felt disappointed. She had hoped to learn some skills from Master Alberto, or at least feel safer, right? Lillian put on her baseball cap and sunglasses again, intending to head back to school. When applying for college, she deliberately chose a local one to take care of her mother. Besides, whenever she irritated the old man, Richard, he would be restless all day. However, she always had boundaries. While she might provoke Richard, at critical moments, she knew when to yield to the elder. So, Richard's feelings towards her were a mix of love and hate. But it seemed that ever since her half-brother emerged, Richard's hatred for her had grown day by day. During the summer vacation, the university campus became deserted. Lillian went up to the top floor of the school's administrative building alone. The reason was simple—because it was the tallest building on campus. Standing on the thirty-seventh floor, it was almost like being in a skyscraper. Moreover, during the vacation, the building was almost empty, especially at night, which Lillian quite enjoyed. As night fell quietly, with stars dotting the sky, Lillian sat next to the protruding lightning rod. This was a small corner with the entrance hidden behind. Sitting here gave her a sense of tranquilly, as if the world had forgotten her. Lillian held a bottle of vodka in her hand and took a sip, the burning sensation choking her. Damn, what a bunch of frauds. Who said drinking hard liquor in a quiet place was the most romantic thing? It was just a scam. Lillian, who usually only drank wine, regretted taking a big gulp of vodka. As time passed, Lillian heard the sound of orderly footsteps approaching. She turned her head and saw one of the bodyguards, a strikingly handsome man, among the group. Despite his calm demeanor, there was an air of superiority about him that was immediately noticeable. Someone quickly brought a chair over, and Leonard gracefully seated himself. His wheat-colored short hair stood upright, his eyes sparkled with an irresistible luster in the moonlight of the night, and his handsome features were seductive, exuding a chilling ruthlessness. Vivian stood beside Leonard, her lips a seductive shade of crimson and her ear-length hair giving her a sleek look. Her eyes were dark and bright, and she wore a Versace trench coat cinched at the waist, paired with thigh-high black boots. Lillian secretly observed the group of people who suddenly appeared on the rooftop. She dared not even breathe heavily, instinctively knowing that something different was about to happen on the top of this skyscraper, and the person sitting in the chair was the leader. Next was a middle-aged woman who was brought over, causing Lillian to hold her breath even more. She recognized this woman, the school's vice principal, Mariana. She was very capable; she had heard Mariana's insightful speeches before and knew about her many achievements. In short, Mariana was a leader with courage, intelligence, and the ability to get things done. As Mariana was brought forward, she appeared somewhat trembling, her face pale as she kneeled before Leonard, trembling like a leaf in the autumn wind. "Mariana greets the master." Leonard asked, "How long have you been a member?" Mariana replied, "Nine years and seven months," her face growing paler like a sheet of paper.
