Chapter 3

After our hot session, I left his office and was greeted by my manager. “So, how did it go?” she asked. “I-It was more intense than I expected,” I replied honestly, knowing that she would take it in a different perspective. After that, I sat by my office corner and started accomplishing the tasks given by the others. Though, they were only small tasks and for sure, I would become their errand girl before I could receive a much more meaningful and bigger tasks. That ain't a problem since I was not really in the mood for it. A little while later, my phone vibrated upon receiving an email. It was from my father. Heaving a sigh, I opened it and saw that he was once again bickering since I came here to Centralia City even without telling him ahead of time. I mean... I was already an adult so keeping him updated of all things was not really an adult thing to do. I was about to turn off my phone, however, father suddenly called. Clicking my tongue, I got up from my seat and walked to the office veranda. “What is it?” I asked with a not-so-energetic voice. “Where are you right now?” he asked with a firm voice. I could tell that he was probably gnashing his teeth out of anger right now but it was not really something I should be worried about. “At work, of course.” “At work? At the office of our rival company? Daphne! How much more chaos do you want to cause before you are satisfied?!” I moved the phone away from my ears because he was already yelling. Not that it was the first time. I got used to him yelling at me all the time. “Until you leave the family, stepfather,” I replied with a snicker. And just like always, he had gone quiet for a moment. I guess calling him stepfather really does get into him. And I would not hesitate calling him that until he tears himself away from my biological father's family. I did not want him to be my father when he used to be my lover. “That is not going to happen, Daphne. Whether you like it or not, you are coming home to our house tonight. I will send someone to fetch you there and we will talk later.” “Don't even bother doing that,” I said. “I will be going there myself to see mom for a while.” Not wanting to speak with him any further, I ended the call and heaved a sigh. My first love... how did I end up calling you father? Damn it! I hated to admit but... my feelings for him was still burning inside of me. Even after years of leaving this place to let myself heal, it just did not work. Even though I said to myself that I will use Troy for me to move on but... I had no idea if it would even work now that I have to meet Killian every once in a while. I got back inside and started to receive the coffee orders of my co-workers. Since I was the newest one, I had to be the one to go and buy them. I did not bother complaining because it would only reflect badly on me so I rushed out of the company and went to the nearest coffee shop. Placing all their orders, I sat on the nearest table to wait for them. A little while later, I got a call from mom. I did not really want to answer it because I still held a grudge against her for taking Killian away from me. Staring at my phone, I waited for it to stop vibrating but it seemed like she had no plans in giving up. On her third try, I decided to answer. “Are you still mad at me, Daphne?” she asked first and I could tell that there was a hint of anger in her voice. “If you know that, then why are you still calling?” I asked in return. “I heard from your father–” “Stepfather,” I corrected. “I heard from your stepfather that you just got employed in Laurel Corporation. Are you doing this to extend your rebellious acts?” “Yes, exactly. It is a good thing that you actually got that part.” Sarcasm was so obvious in my voice and I just hoped that it would annoy the s**t out of her. It was the only way I could think of to slowly get back at her for snatching away my lover years ago. A little while later, I heard a sigh on the other side of the line. “After work, I will come and fetch you there. Let's have dinner together.” I did not bother responding and simply ended the call. And luckily, the orders were all ready so I grabbed them and headed back to the office. I was already sweating when I reached my destination, but it was a good thing to receive sincere gratitude from my co-workers. Well, I just hoped that they were indeed sincere. In the middle of doing some paperwork, I heard a few voices so I lifted my gaze to the hallway and saw the CEO with several other men wearing some formal suits. They might be important clients or shareholders seeing that Troy was handling them himself. Before I could look away, our gazes met in a quick second. I bit my lower lip to stop myself from letting out a smile seeing how he also tried to hide his smirk. I must admit, office romance was definitely not something I expected to happen but it seemed fun, especially when I f****d my boss right in his office in my first day. It was a thrill, I must say. “But it isn't romance anyway,” I mumbled to myself. “It's a fling.” “What are you saying?” my manager suddenly asked. It seemed like she had heard me mumbling but to answer her question, I simply shook my head and told her that I was simply having some self-talk. The day passed without anything huge happening so it was quite a good first day of work for me. After finishing my tasks for the day, I immediately headed out and got into a cab before mom comes. I did not want to attend that stupid dinner. I did say that I will go but not today... on another day perhaps. I was simply not prepared to see Killian again because up until this very moment, I could not swallow the truth that he had tied the knot with my mom. It was just hard to accept such a cruel thing and I did not want them both blaming me for being unable to move on. They should not do that because they betrayed me so neither of them have any right to get mad at me. Reaching my apartment, I threw my bag on the couch and plopped myself on the bed. This day could have been perfect if only I did not receive those calls. With the tiredness taking over my body, I could only drift to sleep to have a proper rest. However, the moment that I was supposed to fully fall into deep slumber, the doorbell kept ringing nonstop and had totally shooed away my sleepiness. “f**k!” Cursing under my breath, I got up and sluggishly walked towards the door. I did not bother checking who it was and simply opened the door only to see my stepfather standing before me. Killian was wearing a three-piece suit and the annoyed look on his face did not lessen how good-looking he was. I ran out of words to say because it had been years since we last saw each other. And to be honest, it felt like this was a dream... a dream that was too good to be true. “I came to fetch you,” he said. Oh, right. They wanted me to join dinner with them. “No,” I firmly replied and was about to shut the door close. However, Killian held it tight and forced himself inside my apartment. “I said I do not want to go! Which part of that is so hard to understand?!” I yelled at him. “Whether you want it or not, you are coming with me back to the house. I have already let you off the hook many times but you working on Laurel Corporation is something I cannot just–” “Stop that, Killian,” I interjected. “Stop acting like that because you are confusing me! I... I do not know if you are acting like that because you are my stepfather or if it is because you are worried as a person who used to be my lover!” There was a moment of silence between us as we gazed at each other's eyes. “I am doing this because I am your stepfather,” he said after a while. I smiled bitterly before looking away from him and walked back inside. It hurts to hear him say that right in front of me. It would have hurt less if only he said it through a phone call. “Just leave. I have another appointment today.” “Then, cancel it.” I scoffed at his remark. Turning to him with a smirk, I said, “Why would I cancel my date for a f****d up dinner?” For some reason, Killian was silenced after hearing that. He probably thought that I haven't gotten over him yet and he was right. But I needed to pretend that I was over him to show him that I was not just stuck to our past. “Date?” He finally spoke. “Uh-huh. And guess what? He is also a CEO like you but do you know the difference between the two of you? He is not a man who looks at my mother. He looks straight at me.” I was about to enter in my walk-in closet but then, I felt his hand on my wrist as he pulled me towards him. The next second, he pushed me over the wall and trapped me in between his arms. I snickered. “Don't look agitated because you look like a jealous lover... not a worried stepfather–” The next thing he did shocked me to the point of paralyzing me in place. The gap that was between us was no longer there as Killian kissed me... he f*****g kissed me and just like always, his kisses were intoxicating and hard to resist. Thus, my hands snaked their way around his neck as I kissed him back.
