Chapter 38Two minutes after the PA announcement an orderly backed through the door holding a tray. Sheppard could see there was a syringe on it, but he couldn’t tell what was in it. There was no label on the syringe, and he wouldn’t be able to read it at this distance regardless. Haley hadn’t improved at all during the previous two minutes. The monitors were still flashing red, the anesthetist was adjusting dials, pushing her oxygen up to a higher flow rate, and the rest of the trauma staff still shared a concerned look. They weren’t hopeful. The orderly handed the syringe to one of the nurses who quickly inserted it into the IV line and depressed the plunger. Several of the team continued to work on sewing up Haley’s shoulder while the rest of the team stood back and watched the monitor.
