LUCIA'S POV
Today my mate officially became alpha.
The ceremony had started, but I was a few minutes late. Evelyn told me it would make me stand out more with the special dress she made for me.
And she couldn’t have been more right because everyone’s eyes were on me while I entered except Axel’s.
His eyes were on Susan. Maybe that should have been my sign to stop whatever stupid thing I had in my head but instead, it seemed to empower me more.
He stood on the podium looking so glorious as he started to give his speech.
“First off, I want to thank everyone who is here tonight. This has been a long time coming.”
I have waited for this moment for four years. In a moment, Axel will announce me as his Luna in front of everyone. I have given my all to the rebuilding of the pack in the past four years.
I stood at the side of the hall nervously rubbing my hands on my dress, which was a glittery silver dress. It symbolized the moon because the Luna was to embody the moon goddess and that is what I was trying to do, or at least that is what Evelyn had in mind.
“This night will set a new beginning for us. Four years ago, I found my mate and she was nothing but amazing. She has helped the pack, and I am sure everyone can testify to that.” Everyone nodded their heads and a small smile played on my lips.
I was finally getting appreciated for my years of hard work. This was the moment that Axel would publicly claim me as his mate.
My wolf and I, Sara, felt giddy inside.
My heart raced in excitement.
“She has worked harder than anyone, putting in more hours to ensure everything runs smoothly. She has proven her dedication to every single person in the pack, and now she deserves her title. She has shown this pack what commitment is.” Axel continued his speech.
“Damn, your man is good with words and building up things in the moment,” Evelyn nudged playfully.
“Shut up girl,” I chuckled.
"I want everyone here to understand how much I value what she's done for Crescent Moon, the effort she's put in, the late nights, the work she's taken on without complaint. It hasn't gone unnoticed."
“I think this is when you start moving forward,” Evelyn whispered and pushed me forward to meet him. I started walking towards him, hanging on to his every word and smiling.
"The role of Luna is demanding. It requires someone strong, fearless, who will stand by at all times, and is my equal. Someone who can take my place when I am not around and lead the pack. There is only one female in this pack that can do all of that.” He raised his hand in my direction and I started to walk faster towards him as tears welled in my eyes.
“And that is Susan,” I was about to put another foot forward when I heard what he said.
Susan?
The crowd erupted in applause and I turned back to see Susan wearing the exact same dress I had worn.
She smiled, walking towards me with so much charisma, and then she walked past me to the podium.
It all happened in slow motion as I slowly came to the realization of what was going on.
I wasn’t going to be named Luna, Axel had already picked his Luna and it wasn’t me.
She climbed the platform steps and Axel took her hand, raised it high for everyone to see. The pack cheered louder.
The position I had sacrificed my blood, sweat, and tears for. The title I had worked for without complaining for four whole years was going to Susan?
I turned around and started moving towards the door before anyone would see me, but Mrs. Martins stopped me.
She’d always been a b***h to me.
“Why are you wearing the same dress as Luna?” she asked loudly.
I opened my mouth to answer but at that moment I could not say anything.
What would I have said that would have made sense?
I just shook my head and ran towards the exit before I started getting teased by the pack members.
I made it to the garden at the side of the building before I fell to the ground and the tears I had been holding back finally gave way.
Soon enough, my wolf was howling in my head, and it was driving me crazy.
I tried to control my breathing and failed. I lay on the ground very aware that it would leave a dirt mark on my dress, but I couldn’t be bothered about that.
Then she stood in front of me, “Lucia, I know you put in a lot of work and thought you’d be made Luna. Everyone knows this but we need someone strong enough. You… well you may not have been respected by the people because of your wolf status. I hope you understand what I am trying to tell you,” she said sympathetically, but she didn’t look at it at all.
Of course, everyone knew that I thought I would be made Luna.
“Please cut the crap and say what you need to say,” I spoke harshly.
She looked at me for a second, then she started laughing.
“How could you think you’d be made the Luna? You are just an omega, and no matter how much you try to prove yourself that would just be nothing. You could never match Axel or carry the burden of the pack with your low-grade wolf.” She eyed me.
“I…”
“Have you forgotten about your background and how it could have affected us?” She interrupted me.
Right. It would be brought up again. Nobody will forget about how my father and uncle tried to forcefully take the pack causing the deaths of a lot of people, including the previous Luna.
“Don’t you dare bring that up.”
“Oops, must be a touchy subject.” She giggled.
“Oh well. Just know I did you a favour and we will have very strong healthy pups that will be able to lead the pack.” Her hand grazed her lower belly.
What the f**k did she mean?
“What do you mean by that?” I asked.
“I know you are not stupid.” Was all she said before she walked away.
Couldn’t she have meant she was pregnant right? Axel would never do that to me.
