Chapter 5

After eating and now feeling full, we are just sitting around the fire. Logan wanted to leave right away but I was way too full to move; being only a forty-five-minute walk away from his pack, I told him I needed to rest since we weren’t far. He reluctantly agreed. I am now snuggled into Logan, leaning towards him with my head on his shoulder, feeling content. My eyes start to close, I must be more tired than I thought, as I start to drift off but am startled at a vibrating sound. I look up at Logan who looks guilty; he avoids my stare, removes his vibrating cell phone from his pocket, stands up and walks away. “This is Alpha Logan.” His voice begins to fade as he walks away from the clearing. “What the hell?!” I am absolutely fuming since Logan told me that both his and Jasper’s phones died during our car ride. I look over at Jasper and he doesn’t meet my glare, looking just as guilty. “Jasper, what the f**k?” I stand up and Jasper soon follows as I stare him down, deeply disappointed. “Luna, I’m sorry.” “For what? For lying to me?” Jasper slightly tilts his head to the side, “Well I’m technically not the one who lied to you.” I smack his arm in anger, “not the point. You knew Logan was lying. Why? Why not just tell me the truth?” “First off, ow.” Jasper says as he rubs his arm, “you’re stronger than you look.” Seeing as how I wasn’t responding to his humour; he continues with all seriousness. “Luna, I’m sorry, truly. After seeing the way you reacted when you first found out about Logan and werewolves, he thought it best to keep it from you in case you decided to call someone.” “And tell them what? It’s not like anyone would believe me anyway. The fact is you guys lied to me. Relationships are built on trust so Logan should have trusted me. I had every right to react the way that I did, Jasper. You should have told me, I thought I could trust you.” Jasper looks hurt but I didn’t care. I needed to get away from him and Logan. “Which direction is the pack in?” “What? Why?” “Just point me out in which direction so I can be on my way. I don’t want to be near you or Logan right now.” “Luna, I can’t just let you walk by yourself, its dangerous.” “I don’t care. I can’t be here right now.” I walk away from Jasper, in the opposite direction Logan went, and stomp further away. I feel Jasper pull my arm trying to stop me. “Let go, Jasper.” “I’m sorry but I can’t do that, Luna.” “Stop calling me Luna. You obviously don’t respect me since you lied to me so stop calling me that!” “Natalya please—” Before Jasper could continue, he goes stiff, and I figure Logan is mindlinking him. I try to pry my arm out of his grip but he doesn’t budge, so I just stand there and wait until they are done. Jasper looks worried and almost scared as he looks back at me and I know something isn’t right. “Natalya,” he turns me around and points to the direction I was heading towards, “that way is the pack, go and whatever you do, don’t stop.” I turn back around and face Jasper. “What’s wrong? Now you want me to go alone?” Jasper’s words are rushed, “I can’t explain. You need to go. Now!” Before I can take a step, a set of growls comes from the other side of the clearing. I am frozen in fear as a man wearing a torn up white shirt and cut off short appears in the clearing with several ragged looking wolves flanking both his sides. “Well well well. Looks like the Alpha finally found his mate.” His voice is hoarse and deep, and the way he’s staring up and down my body makes me shiver in disgust. “And what a pretty thing at that.” Several wolves on either side of him growl, like they are agreeing with him. Jasper slowly pulls me behind me, already in protective mode and snarls at the rogue. “Leave, now before I tear you to shreds, rogue.” “I’d watch how you speak to me, pup. Besides, I want to get to know this fine lady.” “You’re not going to get that chance.” Jasper growls; without taking his eyes off from the rogues, he tries ushering me to go but I shake my head. “Jasper, I’m not leaving you.” I whisper, knowing full well with their werewolf hearing, the rogue can still hear me. “Aw isn’t that sweet, boys. She’s already acting like a Luna.” Jasper growls but doesn’t make a move. “You should do as he says, girl. Because I do love a good chase.” The rogue moves his tongue over his bottom lip as he stares at me. Jasper growls and starts to shake in anger, and I know he is about to shift. “Oh my God Jasper…” Jasper quickly glances to me, “Natalya, run!” he almost yells as I hear his bones starting to crack. I gasp, turn around and run in the direction Jasper pointed me to. I hear clothing tear and growling but I don’t turn back I just keep running. Where the hell is Logan? Jasper can’t take on all those rogues by himself. I am already breathing heavily as I fight through the branches and the thorns from various plants. I keep pushing myself forward because I know if I stop, there’s a good chance I’m dead. I’m not sure how long I’ve been running for, but I hear paws hitting the ground and growling getting closer behind me. I don’t turn around and push myself to go faster. My legs are burning, and sweat is trickling down my back and my forehead, but I don’t stop. I can’t stop. I have no clue if its Logan and Jasper behind me or the rogues, but I can’t risk looking behind me. I’ve been running nonstop that I feel like I’m getting lightheaded; Oh God, I don’t feel good. Not paying attention, I trip over a tree root, scraping my knees as I fall down to the ground with an oompf. I turn around on my butt and insect my knees; sure enough my jeans are both torn at the fabric and I can already feel the skin sting and I know I’ve skinned them both. I hear growling and look up and see a werewolf with unkept fur; so, this is one of the rogues. I shake in fear knowing it will attack. I’m about to die. Oh God. But the werewolf doesn’t move, it just stays put growling at me. I look at it in confusion. Until I hear a voice, his voice. “Little Luna. Little Luna. How I do love to chase you.” I’m taking short breaths, scared because I can’t see the rogue taunting me. I glance back at the rogue I do see but he still just stands there and growls. I look around and notice a thick tree branch broken off not too far away from me. I slowly stand up and look around. “Are you going to show yourself?” I try to sound brave, but my voice comes out shaky. I still can’t see him, but I hear him laugh menacingly. I shake my head in frustration, its now or never. I stare down at the rogue werewolf. “And what about you? Just gonna stand there you mangy mutt.” He growls and crouches down ready to jump at me. I quickly go for the tree branch and grasp it in both my hands. As I spin around the werewolf is airborne, ready to strike at me, but I whack him right along the side of his snout with the tree branch. The werewolf howls in pain as he soars to the ground, hard. I stand there in shock; the rogue werewolf’s jaw looks broken. Holy s**t! Did I do that? The rogue werewolf growls and I hear cracking and snapping. Oh dear lord, it’s healing. Sure enough, I see his jaw slowly and painfully snapping back into place. I drop the tree branch and run; not thinking about the pain in my legs. I hear trees bristling as someone runs at my side just behind me. The sound of clothes tearing and growling grow closer. I scream in pain as I feel jaws close down on my right ankle, forcing me on my stomach. I look over my shoulder and see a large ragged looking grey wolf; he releases my ankle. I spin around so I’m sitting on my butt and he sticks his tongue out, cleaning my blood off his teeth and snout. I try to move my legs but scream in pain; I can see my jeans already staining with red. My blood. I don’t do well with blood so I don’t look at it for too long. The rogue moves slowly to me and crouches but before he could leap to me a black wolf with white fur lunges at him and knocks him down to his side. The black wolf quickly glances at me and I notice his brown eyes. “Jasper?” The black wolf growls and turns his attention back to the rogue. The rogue growls and snaps at Jasper with his teeth but Jasper dodges the rogue’s attack and claws the rogue in his side. The rogue doesn’t seem bothered at all and growls. He jumps at Jasper but Jasper is ready from him and they claw and bite each other. I see a couple more rogues appear, ready to step in and help their fellow rogue but I hear growling to my side. I glance over to see two wolves, both grey pounce at the other rogues while a very large all black wolf slowly makes its way to me. If I thought the one rogue and Jasper’s wolves were large this wolf is even bigger and I notice his very blue eyes staring intently at me. “Logan.” He comes to me and I have to tilt my head up slightly to look into his blue eyes. He rubs his head against mine and starts sniffing at me. He whimpers and growls looking me over. He notices my knees and quickly licks them and then moves down to my ankle and licks away. It hurts at first but then the pain fades away. I look at Logan’s wolf appreciatively, “Thank-you Logan.” He only growls and continues to lick me. I notice the two wolves that came with Logan have killed the two other rogues but I don’t see the one that bit me. Jasper’s wolf walks to me and I immediately notice his fur on his shoulder stained in blood. “Oh my God, Jasper. Are you ok?” Jasper’s wolf huffs and stares at me making sure I’m okay. Logan’s wolf growls staring at Jasper’s. They stare intently at one another. “Okay boys. There’s no need for that.” Logan glances at me and growls but Jasper growls at him. Logan stands to his height, showing his dominance and Jasper has no choice but to submit. He tilts his head to the side revealing his neck in submission but growls lowly. Logan huffs and looks at me. “Logan, you’re being a child.” Logan growls and plops himself down next to me on my other side. I shake my head and look at Jasper. I pat his head, ignoring Logan’s growls, “Thank you for saving me Jasper. You’re a great Beta and an amazing friend.” Jaser preens at the compliment and leans into my touch. Logan continues to growl so I stop patting Jasper’s head. It’s only then I notice the two other wolves are looking at me curiously with their heads tilted to the side. I can’t help but giggle at the sight. Logan growls then gets on his four legs he nudges me with his head to get his attention. I look at him and he kneels slightly, “You want me to ride you?” He nods his head and I lift one leg over him and grab onto his fur. “Okay, I’m ready.” Logan huffs, straightens up and then we are off. I am in awe at the speed Logan is running at; I’m usually not a fan of fast rides but I can’t help but watch the trees blur as we quickly pass them. I notice the grey wolves keeping up with Logan, on either side of us which tells me Jasper is behind us. In no time at all, I notice several wolves up ahead and even a few in their human forms; this must be the pack border. Logan stops just in front of a man who has a slim build; his brown hair is shaved on both sides. He stands at attention with the arrival of his Alpha and I can only assume this is Logan’s Gamma. “Welcome back, Alpha. It’s good to see you.” Logan huffs in response kneeling so I can get off him. Logan and the others set off to the side behind some trees; which I can only assume hide some change of clothes so they can shift back. The man who greeted Logan clears his throat and I turn my attention to him. “You must be Logan’s mate. Welcome to Northridge Pack, Luna.” “Thank you…” My voice trails off since I have no clue who he is. “Gamma Leo, ma’am.” I smile appreciatively, “thank you Gamma Leo.” At the sound of bristling bushes, I turn to see Logan walking to me in nothing but a pair of jeans. I notice some dried blood and a few scratches on his chest but no other injuries. Behind Logan there’s both a man and woman who look shockingly similar, they must be twins, they both have strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. They wear matching black uniforms, which I quickly conclude must mean they are warriors. I quickly gasp as I take in Jasper who is walking behind them, his shoulder is badly wounded and is bleeding profusely. “Oh my God, Jasper.” Jasper shakes his head, “I’m fine Luna. It looks worse than it is.” Logan wraps his hand around my waist, and we start to follow Gamma Leo through the gate. Logan glances at Jasper, “Go see the Doc about that shoulder Beta, then report to the packhouse.” Logan sounds so serious and I can’t help but raise my eyebrows at his tone. Jasper doesn’t look at Logan, “Yes, Alpha.” Even Jasper seems so stern, he walks away and instead of going straight ahead like us, he veers to the left which I can only assume is where their pack hospital is. Logan then turns his attention to the two warriors, “Elena, Colin, thank you for your assistance. Go freshen up then report to Gamma Leo. Inform him of the rogue situation. I have business to attend to with my mate.” “Yes, Alpha.” Both Elena and Colin say in unison. Gamma Leo gives Logan a curt nod then the three of them leave Logan and I alone. Without giving me a glance, he releases my waist, grasps my wrist and leads us down the path which I can only assume leads to the packhouse. We walk in uncomfortable silence and I can’t help but steal quick glances at Logan; his eyebrows are furrowed in anger and I can’t help but wonder what I could have possibly done wrong now to upset him. I think back to when he and Jasper were growling at one another; he can’t possibly be angry about that, can he? “Logan?” I’m met with silence so I try again. “Logan, talk to me, what’s wrong?” He squeezes my wrist slightly; I’m unsure if this is his way of telling me to stop talking or what, but I’m not liking the silent treatment. He has no right to be mad with me; after all his lies, I should be giving HIM the silent treatment. “You know what this is ridiculous; you have no right to be mad at me.” I stop walking and pull my wrist out of Logan’s unsuspecting grip and glare at him. “If anyone should be giving the silent treatment here its me. You re the one who lied to me about the whole cellphone situation and don’t even get me started on your growling match with Jasper. What was that even about anyway?” Logan looks shocked at my outburst but just as soon its replaced by anger. “He shouldn’t have left your side. You were all alone running for your life, Natalya. I have every right to be upset with him.” I sigh, “Logan, he didn’t have much of a choice. He told me to run; there were too many rogues. I would’ve just distracted him. You’re being unreasonable, he saved my life.” “You shouldn’t have been put in danger in the first place.” I lift my hand to Logan’s cheek and he relaxes and leans into my touch. “Logan, we can never know when bad things happen. We just have to deal with it and move on. I’m here, with you, I’m ok.” I speak softly and stare into Logan’s blue eyes. Logan and I continue to stare at one another until Logan nods his head. “Come on, lets get to the packhouse, freshen up and you can have some rest. You’ve been up all night, you’re probably exhausted.” I nod my head, pull away my hand from his face but hold my stare at him, “don’t think you’re off the hook though. You still lied to me Logan.” Logan huffs, “I didn’t lie to you.” “yes, you did. You told me your cell phone battery died but obviously it didn’t. So why lie?” “I was protecting you, Natalya.” “That’s bull s**t and you know it, Logan!” Logan growls, “watch your tone when speaking to me.” “Logan, if this is going to work, you’re going to have to trust me. I will not cower like some scared little girl. I will stand my ground; that’s just who I am. Get used to it.” Logan shakes head in frustration and walks away and continues down the path. I cannot believe him. I’m not sure if I can handle his hot and cold mood swings, its like dealing with a man-child. I cross my arms and follow behind Logan, but I make sure to keep a little distance between us. I didn’t really think about it much, with all the adrenaline from the rogue attack, but my body does feel drained. I can’t even imagine what I must look like, so a nice long shower and nap would do me wonders and maybe a little space from Logan would be good too. We turn down the path and a village comes into view. Little shops on with either side ranging from a bakery to a couple restaurants to even a food market stall; it’s cozy. Obviously its too early for anything to be open so we continue down the path. We walk a little further and I see a three-story brick building, the length of a football field come into view; this must be the packhouse.
