I hear my bedroom door quietly close as I slowly flutter my eyes open. I stretch my arms and notice how dark it is from the doors to the balcony. I yawn and notice a clock on the night table and see it is 5:23 pm; I quickly sit up and gasp.
“Holy s**t, I slept the whole day.” I fall back on the bed, groaning, and notice the other side hasn’t been slept in. Did Logan never come back? The cotton robe is still wrapped around my body and I sigh. What am I going to wear for dinner…OH s**t.
Remembering about the celebratory dinner, I jump out of bed and practically sprint to the bathroom to freshen up. Once I am finished with my business, I look at the lounge chair and frown. My clothes that I wore yesterday are neatly folded, clean, on the lounge chair. Am I going to have to wear that for dinner? I walk to Logan’s closet, open the door but only see his clothes on one side and the other side is empty. That’s odd; Jasper said I would get new clothes to wear for dinner. I walk out of the closet and look at my clothes that I know are not appropriate. Maybe someone is outside in the hall and I can ask for some clothes. I walk to the bedroom door, quietly open it and glance in the hall but find it empty; it’s like a ghost town.
I sigh and close the door; I guess I have no choice but to wear them. I pick the clothes off the lounge chair and change into my jeans and tank top. I’m sure Logan’s mother will have something to say about this outfit. I shake my head after that thought, No Natalya, stop it. It’s not your fault, you don’t have anything else to wear and its not like they gave you any new clothes. I sit on the lounge chair to wear my flats, which are also now clean. I look at my right ankle and see only scars remain; it’s no longer red or puffy. I really could get used to this quick healing. I sigh and thoughts of Logan enter my mind. He was very distant yesterday and his cold behaviour start to make me worry. He wouldn’t bring me all the way to his pack just to reject me; that would be just plain cruel. I put my other shoe on and stand up; I walk to the bathroom and finger comb my hair, so it looks at least presentable. My hair tie is still around my wrist, so I decide to put my hair in a high ponytail, showing off my mark. Recalling what I’ve read from my novels, I look closely at my mark; its nothing special like a tattoo or a unique mark but just teeth marks embedded in my skin. Well, here goes nothing, I think to myself as I leave the washroom, open my bedroom door, and walk the two flights of stairs to the dining hall I recall having a glimpse at when I arrived.
As I descend the stairs, I can hear a muffled conversation, but I am unable to hear anything specific. Seems like I’m the last one to arrive; why didn’t anyone wake me up? I make it to the bottom of the stairs to the main entryway and finally see a familiar face; Jasper. My face lights up with a smile as Jasper looks at me but I don’t get the reaction I was hoping for. He curiously gazes at me from head to toe and then looks at my eyes then gives me a curt nod.
“Luna.”
My eyebrows raise in surprise and then I slump my shoulders in defeat. Of course, he has to be professional; the others can hear him from the other room.
I nod my head at Jasper, “Beta Jasper.” I walk by him but can’t help but glance back at him. I see him look at me with sympathy and mouths, “sorry” to me and I know my suspicions are right. He needs to remain in ‘Beta Mode’ so he doesn’t show any disrespect since the others can hear us. I enter the dining hall and see Logan sitting on one side of the table, dressed in a white dress shirt and black dress pants, and sitting beside him, to my horror, is a stunning woman; this must be Sandra. What the hell is she doing sitting next to Logan?! How could he allow that? I can’t help but feel like this was planned considering Logan doesn’t even acknowledge my presence. At the head of the table, facing me is an older man, dressed in a suit; I know immediately this man is Logan’s father because of the scowl permanently etched on his face. Yepp, definitely Logan’s father. I bring my attention back to Sandra; her long blonde locks are hanging over her shoulders and I can see she is wearing a very revealing turquoise dress. She sneers at me and shakes her head looking at my outfit. Yes b***h, I know I’m underdressed. Not my fault I was whisked away from my home unable to pack anything. Sitting on the other end of the table, her back to me, is Logan’s mother. Her hair is still in a tight bun only this time she is also in a dress, only hers is a deep purple colour.
“So glad you could finally join us, Miss Fields. Take your seat and we can finally eat.”
I look at the table and see an empty chair right across from Logan. Well I guess I’m sitting there. As I walk to my chair, I can’t help but set the record straight, “I do apologize for my lateness, I guess I was more tired than I thought, and about my attire—”
Sandra scoffs, “I wasn’t aware humans wear such outfits to formal dinners.”
I can’t help but cringe at Sandra’s high-pitched voice. Hopefully she won’t talk much or else my ears might bleed. But alas, my hopes are tarnished as Sandra continues as I take my seat.
“Being late is one thing but that outfit…I must say Natalie that this pack needs a Luna who can not only show up on time but actually cares about their appearance. Image is everything.”
Oh no, this b***h did not just insult me. I quickly glance at Logan to see his reaction, but, nothing, not even a growl so I turn my attention to Sandra.
“First off, my name is Natalya and Sandra, which I can only assume is your name since you didn’t have the decency to introduce yourself, I didn’t mean to be late. Logan and I had a long journey here to the pack; I must admit I should have set my alarm seeming as how no one bothered to wake me,” I raise my hand to silence Sandra who looks like she was about to open that trap of hers, and continue, “I’m still speaking, I will not have you interrupt me again.” I drop my hand back in my lap and continue, keeping my gaze on Sandra, “As for my clothing, I was informed earlier that I would be given clothes for this evening but this was the only clothing in the bedroom.”
“And you still came, looking like that.” Logan’s mother chimes in and I glance at her.
“Yes ma’am. These clothes are not what I would have chosen for dinner but seeming as how I didn’t have any other choice—”
Logan’s mother, glaring at me interrupts, “We all have a choice, Miss Fields.”
With that, the table is silent as several people enter with plates in their hands. One person comes to each of our sides and serves us a plate of garden salad. A young, petite girl serves me, and I glance at her.
“Thank you, it looks delicious.” The girl’s eyes widen in surprise; either she’s not used to being acknowledged or she wasn’t expecting me to thank her.
Sandra scoffs, “You’re thanking the help? It’s their job to serve. You humans are ridiculous.” Sandra grabs her fork and starts eating her salad.
The girl who served me bows her head slightly and walks away, along with the other servers, who I can’t help but think must all be omegas. I stare at Sandra and glare, “just because it’s their job doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be thankful. It’s called being polite and having manners, Sandra, you should try it sometime.” I pick up my fork and start to eat my salad.
I hear Sandra huff, “What did to just say to me?” I can’t help but stare at Sandra, as she looks over at Logan, “are you going to allow her to speak to me like that?!”
Logan, finally looks at me, just for a second, then glances at his mother then looks back at me. “Natalya, Sandra is a family friend and our guest. Show her some respect.” He then continues eating. His voice holds authority but has zero emotion towards me. It’s as if he completely disregards the fact that he marked me and I’m his mate.
I glare at Logan then look at a smug looking Sandra who continues eating as well. I glance at Logan’s mother who purses her lips at me then finishes her salad. I then glance at Logan’s father who has finished eating and is just sitting in his chair, with his elbows on the table, fingers crossed, glaring at me. That’s when it hits me; I’m not wanted here. While sitting in with his parents earlier, they must have persuaded him to not complete the bond and reject me. I glance up at Logan, who has now finished eating as well, and I see no emotion. No inner fight with his wolf. He has made his decision. I’m gonna be just like those women in the books; rejected and left alone. Shut up, Natalya. This isn’t one of your books. This is real life. I slowly eat the rest of my salad, drowning out Sandra and Logan’s mother’s conversation, not caring about any of this anymore. Why doesn’t he just get on with it. Why prolong the inevitable. But if he thinks I’m going to accept his rejection without knowing why he put me through all this, he has another thing coming.
I hastily drop my fork in the bowl, finishing my salad as the omegas replace our empty bowls with a plate filled with pot roast, mashed potatoes and steamed carrots.
I see the same girl next to me and I smile at her, “Thank you.” The girl slightly nods then walks away. I grab my fork and knife and dig in; ignoring the chit chat. I eat in silence, not bothering to listen in on Logan’s mother and Sandra reminiscing about Logan’s childhood and how Sandra and Logan were so cute together at that age. Okay, so maybe I was listening but who couldn’t with Sandra’s annoying voice.
Logan’s father slams his cutlery on his empty plate, and I can’t help but jump in my chair. “I think we’ve had enough of this.” He looks at his son and continues, “We talked about this. You have a very fine she-wolf next to you who was born to be a Luna. She is someone who will do the pack proud, not some weak human who can’t even protect herself. Do what needs to be done.”
I wipe my mouth with the napkin and place it on the table. Yeah, I can’t say that didn’t hurt but I never chose to be Logan’s mate and I certainly didn’t ask him to mark me. I sigh and finally meet Logan’s eyes which hold zero emotion. I stare at him indifferently, waiting for the inevitable. Come on, Logan. Do it.
“I, Logan Woods, reject you, Natalya Fields, as my mate and Luna.”
I blink but don’t feel the pain of his rejection; but I see Logan gripping the edge of the table, grunting. I’m human so I don’t feel the bond break but he does. I feel no pity for him. No sadness. Not even anger. I just feel, numb.
“Before I accept your rejection, I need to know---”
Sandra laughs, “You’re human so you don’t have to accept anything.” Sandra rubs Logan’s back soothingly as Logan’s mother and father stand and leave the room. But Logan’s mother, being who she is, can’t leave without saying something.
“You can see yourself out.” She grins as she follows her husband out of the room.
I shake my head at them and then look at Logan who seems to have calmed his breathing. He stands, with difficulty, and Sandra puts her arm around him, or at least tries since he’s so bulky and they start to leave. I stand from my chair, “So that’s it? Why didn’t you just leave me to the rogues? Why mark me in the first place?”
Logan and Sandra keep walking, but I’m not finished yet, so I follow them. We make it to the entryway where Jasper is still standing at the stairs; his forehead is wrinkled with worry, but I keep my eyes on Logan’s back.
“I never chose this! You’re the one who forcibly marked me. Logan say something!”
He continues to walk away from me with Sandra still at his side and I snap.
“YOU’RE A COWARD!”
This gets both Logan and Sandra to stop walking but only Sandra turns to look at me.
“How dare you! He’s an Alpha. You’re just a human. Send her to the cells!”
Logan finally chimes in but his voice is hoarse, “No. Just send her home.”
Sandra scoffs and glares at Logan, “What?! You’re letting her leave? She knows too much Logan, she knows about us.”
Logan shakes his head, “no one will believe her.” He goes rigid for a moment, then continues walking making it to the stairs with Sandra hot on his heels. I feel someone stand beside me, knowing its Jasper, and I can’t help but feel tears form. Not out of sadness, but out of anger. How could he possibly just walk away? After everything I’m just supposed to forget and go back to my life? I turn to see Jasper, standing close to me with so much sympathy it hurts.
“Come on, my car is out front.” I just nod my head and he leads me out of the entryway, through the front door and out of the packhouse. It’s still light out even though it’s after 6; perks of having longer days. I see a Jeep ahead and can only assume it belongs to Jasper. He opens the door for me, I get in and put my seatbelt on. Jasper comes around and gets in the drivers’ seat and he starts driving away. As soon as the packhouse is no longer in view, I lean my head against the window and let the tears fall.
