I see Logan standing at the very red front door and I walk up the well landscaped path. He seems to be just standing there but I notice he’s breathing heavily. I walk up to him and stand at his side, and see his eyes keep changing colour, is he arguing with his wolf? I place my right hand on his arm and I feel him go tense.
“Logan—” Before I could ask Logan what was wrong, a middle-aged woman opens the door with a beaming smile at Logan.
“Logan, my son, welcome home!” The woman steps to Logan and goes for a hug, forcing me to let his arm go as she wraps her arms around Logan, despite the fact he’s shirtless and has dried blood on him, and I can’t help but be in awe at the similarities between them. They have the same shade of hair, except hers is in a tight bun, and she has the same blue eyes. However, she is a lot shorter than Logan, almost the same height as me and her figure is what every woman wishes for, for someone her age.
“Hello, mother.” Logan hugs her back and they air kiss each of their cheeks. So this is Logan’s mother, I hope she’ll be okay with me.
As soon as I think this, my happy thoughts evaporate; she stares at me as if I’m some bug that’s got stuck in her shoe. Well, so much for her liking me. She looks back at Logan.
“Dear, who is this?”
Logan clears his throat. “This is my mate.”
His mother’s eyebrows raise so high I think they might get stuck in her hair, “your mate? I see…” She looks me over and plasters a fake smile on her face. “And you are miss….?”
I stick my hand out to her, “Fields, Natalya Fields, ma’am.”
She glances at Logan for a moment; ignoring my hand, she tsks. “Logan, darling, your father is in his study. I’m sure he’ll want to see you.”
Logan sighs, “with all due respect mother, I’ll show Natalya to her room. It’s very early in the morning, I’m surprised you’re even still up.”
His mother waves him off, “come now. I’ll get someone to show Miss Fields a room. You should go see your father, dear.”
Logan and his mother stare at one another; I notice they both go rigid telling me they must be mindlinking. Well this is just fantastic.
His mother huffs and turns away, heading down a narrow hallway. Logan takes my hand, and we enter the doorway. The inside of the packhouse isn’t what I expected; it has beige walls in the entryway and throughout the various hallways. I can see the entrance to a very large kitchen with all white cabinets. To my right is a spiral staircase leading to the other floors. Logan closes the door and leads us up the stairs which are partially carpeted. The packhouse doesn’t seem to have much character; it doesn’t really feel very homey. I have only just arrived, maybe I’m just being silly; plus, my body is exhausted maybe I’ll be able to see more clearly after I’ve gotten a good sleep.
After going up another flight of stairs, Logan leads me down the end of the hall to a set of double doors. He opens them and I know that this is Logan’s room; it’s a room fit for an Alpha. A king-sized bed sits in the center of the room with a night table on either side. A set of double doors, probably leading out to a balcony is right across from me. To our right are two doors which I can only assume would lead to a bathroom and the other a closet. A fireplace is built into the wall, with a couple of lounge chairs in front of it, across from the bed.
“This is your room.”
Logan nods his head. “Let me just take a quick shower then its all yours.”
I nod my head and make my way to the edge of the bed and sit down. Oh my God, this mattress is so soft. I can’t help but run my hand over the duvet, appreciating its softness. I just see Logan close the door closer to the balcony and hear the shower turn on. I sigh tiredly and take off my shoes and inspect my ankle. It’s red but the puncture marks of the rogues’ teeth have healed closed but the skin is still a little puffy and raised. I remove my other shoe and plop them down on the floor. Why did that rogue target me anyway. What does he want? Does Logan know who he is? Before my thoughts could get to me, the door opens and Logan is in nothing but a towel which is hung dangerously low around his bottom half. I can’t help but ogle at his toned body and he clears his throat. I stare into his eyes and his eyebrows are raised; he composes himself and clears his throat again.
“It’s all yours. I don’t have anything shampoo wise for you so feel free to use mine. Afterwards, get some rest.” He opens the door and reveals a large walk in closet as he picks out his clothes.
I sit up, “what about you?”
Without looking at me he responds, “what about me?”
“You need to rest too, Logan.”
“I’m fine, Natalya.”
I scoff. “I get you’re a werewolf and all but even you need to rest.”
Logan walks out of the closet with a pair of pants and dress shirt draped over his arm, “What I need is to take care of my pack, no matter what. Go shower and get some rest.” Without waiting for me to respond, Logan walks to the bedroom door opens it and walks out of his room closing the door without a backwards glance.
I huff, cross my arms and shake my head in frustration. What is with him? His mood swings are killing me. What the hell did he mean by taking care of his pack no matter what? I groan as I get off the bed and walk to the ensuite bathroom. It’s all white and it almost hurts my eyes just how white everything is. I turn to look in the mirror and gasp; I hardly recognize the person staring back at me. Ugh, my hair is a mess. I quickly brush my fingers through my hair to untangle the knots then I remove my clothes before stepping into the stand in shower. I just stood there, enjoying the heat of the water run down the length of my body. I grab a bottle of men’s shampoo and rub it into my hair and rinse it off. Instead of seeing soap, I see a bottle of men’s body wash; better than nothing. I grab the bottle and wash myself enjoying the peppermint scent. I stand under the showerhead for a while longer but now feeling the water start to lose it’s heat I decide I should finish. I turn off the shower, step out and grab a towel; drying myself off. I look at my dirty clothes I wore before and frown; s**t, I don’t have a change of clothes. Seeing a white cotton robe hanging on the bathroom door hook, I decide to wrap myself in that. I fold up my dirty clothes and walk out of the bathroom only to find Jasper sitting on the bed.
I gasp, hands flying in the air, my dirty clothes falling to the floor. “s**t, Jasper. You scared me.”
Jasper chuckles, holds up his hands in surrender, and stands from the bed. “Sorry, Natalya. Didn’t mean to frighten you. I just wanted to check to see how you were.” Jasper’s eyes widen, seeming to only realize now that I’m only in a robe.
I adjust my robe, making sure it’s still covering everything and regain my breathing. “As you can see, I’m fine. Besides, I should be the one checking up on you. You had quite the nasty gash on your shoulder.”
Jasper grins at me and lifts his arm and twirls it around. “See? I’m as good as new. I told you it wasn’t anything serious.”
I nod my head, “Glad to see you’re healed.” I bend over, picking up my clothes and throw them on one of the lounge chairs.
“Where’s Logan?”
Jasper clears his throat, “He’s with his father and mother in the study.”
I walk over to the bed and sit, “Yeah, his mother mentioned something about his father wanting to see him. His mother doesn’t seem to like me very much.”
Jasper sits next to me, “She doesn’t know you yet.” He doesn’t sound very convincing but I appreciate his effort nonetheless.
“I think I’m just gonna lie down and get some rest.”
“Good idea.” Jasper stands up from the bed and I slide to the head of the bed, “I have to go anyway, need to make preparations for our guest.”
“Guest? You mean me? What for?”
Jasper hesitates, “Well, no. Logan’s mother wants me to prepare the arrival of Sandra. She’s coming back tonight and Logan’s mother wants to have a celebratory dinner for her return.”
I scrunch my face in confusion, “Sandra?”
Jasper doesn’t meet my eyes as he says, “Her and Logan go way back.”
I nod, “so its his ex-girlfriend. And his mother is throwing her a dinner?”
Jasper sighs, “Logan’s mother has always adored Sandra.”
I sigh, fall on my back and lean into a pillow, “that’s just fantastic. Should I be worried?”
Jasper again hesitates before responding, “You have Logan’s mark. Everyone can see that you’re his mate.” He goes rigid for a moment then sighs and looks at me. “I’m sorry Natalya but I have to go. I’ll make sure there’s a clean set of clothes for you for when you wake up.”
I nod at him in thanks and he walks out of the bedroom and quietly closes the door. I groan, turn on my side and grab a pillow. An ex-girlfriend, just what I need. Things are strained with Logan and I already I don’t need his ex girlfriend showing up.
I turn back onto my back, still holding the pillow to my chest as I start to remember certain werewolf romance books. It never turns out well when an ex shows up. Will she try anything on Logan? Does Logan still have feelings for her? His mother still adores her, maybe the two of them will conspire against me and turn Logan against me. Will he reject me? Lots of books have their mate reject one another. Ugh, why does this have to happen to me? I’m normal; why does life have to be so complicated? I was doing fine before Logan showed up. I can’t help but wonder if Logan will reject me or not. He seems to care about me then its like a switch goes off and he becomes some cold-hearted jerk. Just knowing Logan is somewhere talking with his parents, I have a bad feeling that they are going to try to talk him out of me being his mate. Even remembering Logan’s comment before he left. I get he’s an Alpha and has a pack to run but at what cost? Clearly a part of him sees me as a weak human; is he questioning my ability to run a pack with him? Does a Luna even run the pack with her Alpha or will I be someone who is just for appearances? Ugh, Natalya, you read to much werewolf romances. I sigh, turn on my side and feel my eyelids getting heavier and heavier. I snuggle into the pillow and welcome the darkness as I drift off to sleep.
