Chapter Three
Elvira's POV
Seduced. This was how I felt as my heart thumped,non-stop. It was the only explanation valid enough.
Mate.
The word resonated in my head and I clutched my purse, tighter. An impossible phenomenon come alive right in front of me. I didn't want to believe it, I pretended not to-not after being betrayed by Kyle. Life gave no second chances-it's too cruel to care.
I shut my eyes, the eccentric feeling of his hot breath against my exposed skin teased me. The way he looked at me and spoke with confidence-it owned me, dominated my essence.
And I hated it.
Hated that it was true, hated that I'm not a lost cause and now I hate how every inch of me began to crave for him.
Unable to bear his pull, I had fled the scene, afraid to look back and get tempted to melt into his strong arrogant arms.
“Where to Miss?” The driver asked, his calm voice interrupting.
I let out a sigh, realizing I had entered his car without warning. “Browndale Street, third curb.” I breathed, staring out the window.
The car proceeded with a rhythmic motion-a contrast to the emotion staring inside of me. Half an hour later, I turned on the shower faucet and savored the warm water as it washed down on me.
His face-my mates’.
It plagued me, his scent lingering. I stepped out of the shower and dried my body with a towel and smiled as i remembered the poor driver. I paid twice the supposed price-an apology for my melodrama.
My phone buzzed. I had a dozen missed calls and text messages from Nelson and Diana. I ignored them and threw my light weight on the bed.
I have a mate.
The words swirled my perception as I slept off.
***********************
“Look who decided to show up at work today.” Nelson announced, dramatically as I walked into my office.
I rolled my eyes at him and settled in. “I have a terrible headache Nel.”
He pretended to be offended and it only took a minute before he left his desk and leaned over at mine. “Why did you leave the party so early? I called you a hundred times. It's rare of you to do such.”
“I had an emergency, I had to leave. Sorry I made you worried.” I lied, focusing on my sketchbook.
He arched an eyebrow. “Did you go home with a guy?”
“What!” I blurted, my cheeks flushed as s memory of my hot mate and I flashed across my eyes.
“It's just a question, why do you look flushe-”
“I see you've decided to prove once again that you're incapable of handling a high class party.” A too familiar shrill voice interrupted.
My mood instantly turned sour and Nelson hissed. The clanging of heels stopped.
“Myra.” I spat.
She smirked, mockingly. One hand on a hip, her tight low dress hugged her delicate figure. Her slender legs commented her beauty, revealing just enough skin to make any many go mad with desire.
“Miss Krueger.” She corrected.
“You're not married to him.” Nelson spat, bitterly.
“Not yet but I will, sooner than you think.” She replied, snidely as she flashed a diamond ring. “Kyle proposed.”
My heart sank. He proposed to her-something I begged for, for years. Tears stung my eyes.
“What do you want Myra? This isn't the HR department.” Nelson retorted, sensing my discomfort.
“I just wanted to see how you're doing and also show you the ring. You're invited to the wedding anyways, you're my sister.” She bragged, a hint of bitterness and mockery evident in her tone.
“That's great news.” I forced myself to day, my cracked voice slightly betraying my emotions.
She moved closer to me and placed a hand on my shoulder. “I know it's been hard on you to see that your mate chose me over you and now we're getting married. You should be more like me, who knows? Some lone wolf might take interest in you.” She said with fake concern then smirked before turning around to leave.
“Elvira…” Nelson called out. His tone softening.
“Good riddance to nonsense right?” I joked, choking on the pea size lump of tears stuck at the back of my throat.
The phone rang-interrupting the tension and I was grateful for it. Nelson answered the phone and looked at me with confusion written all over his face.
“What?”
“That was the Boss's office. He asked to see you, asap.”
The party was the avenue for me to speak with the Boss, personally but I fled before I could get the chance. We had discussed severally over the phone-more like a presentation to his PA.
“Okay.” I responded, wearing a fake confident look. Nelson mumbled a word of prayer.
As I approached the Boss's office, rumors about him filled my ears-unpleasant rumors that had circulated long before his arrival.
His office is located at the west wing of the building, it was more of a presidential wing. I would know because I designed the interior designs myself-the newbie recognition that earned me a name, a promotion and the will to live.
“He's waiting for you.” Anna; his secretary informed me as I halted by her station.
I went over a dozen excuses in my head-anything to avoid me getting fired.
‘That damn sly foxy bastard.’ I cursed under my breath, remembering my mate.
My breathing steadied as I knocked lightly on the door.
“Come in.” A powerful voice boomed from inside.
I stepped in and threaded lightly with caution.
“Miss Sanchez.” His voice boomed-enriched with a timbre effect, commandong respect.
“Sir, I have a perfectly good reason for-” the words stuck at the back of my throat.
Then it hit me like a tornado.
The sweet pine scent.
Unmistakable.
The swivel chair turned to reveal his face, his perfect build enthroned on the seat, carrying the air of an emperor. A magnificent being.
“You!” I exclaimed, gripping an invisible bubble of air.
“You didn't think you've seen the last of me at the party did you?” He smirked, wickedly. His expression was smug-arrogant, domineering. “Mate.”
