Chapter Four
Varyn's POV
‘Elvira Sanchez.’ I sang for the umpteenth time.
“You've been absentmindedly doing everything, is something bothering you Varyn?” Rowan asked, his eyes observing every one of my moves.
“The impossible happened Rowan.’ I breathed excitedly.
“You don't believe in the impossible.” He countered.
I stood up and walked towards the window, staring out the window pane.
“No I didn't, until I met Elvira Sanchez.”
“Who?” Rowan blurted-a subtle note of irritation evident in his tone.
“My mate.” I bragged, the certainty anchoring itself to my bones.
His eyes widened in shock-transitioning from disbelief to shock, excitement and joy, all in a split second.
My phone rang loudly, interrupting whatever he had to say.
“Boss, I've got the information.” A voice at the other end of the call informed me.
“Have it delivered to my office.” I ordered, monotonous then hung up.
“Soon.” I answered the hundreds of unspoken questions that buzzed in Rowan's mind. Unwilling to pursue the topic any further.
He smiled-this time with his eyes. It was wholesome and we both knew at that moment the buried part of me had resurfaced.

I went over Elvira's file one more time after I called her office and authoritatively requested her presence. Her scent preceded her presence-invigorating and alluring.
Her beautiful eyes shone with disbelief upon recognizing me. I teased her lightly and she stuttered, caught off guard.
“You're my boss? How the hell are you Varyn Ferguson!” She exclaimed.
“My dad is Richard Ferguson so rightfully, I'm Varyn-”
“Save the backhand sass you arrogant fox.” She interrupted, snapping her fingers.
I chuckled and rose to my feet. “That's no way to address your mate.”
She froze, desire and shyness etched across her face.
“I don't know what you're talking about.” She lied, looking everywhere except towards my direction.
“Why are you avoiding this? You obviously feel the bond.” I murmured, voice low laced with challenge.
Her grip tightened, her lips curling, painfully. “This can't happen. It's impossible, I can't have a mate.”
“Is it because of Kyle?” I questioned, calmly and she breathed heavily.
I felt a prick in my heart. I had read about Kyle in her file-the mate who shamelessly left for her sister.
“You're my impossible girl.” I calmly stated, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
Something flickered in her eyes-fear, confusion, pain, want. She cleared her throat and took a step back. Away from me.
“I have to get back to work sir. Excuse me.” She excused and hastily walked, leaving me confused and infuriated.
That night, I barely had any sleep.
The nights following offered no peace.
I tried to reach out to her but her defenses were up-cold, higher and I understood her reasons. I was once like her.

“The elders are at it. Jace seems to be fueling the fire, he’s spreading a new rumor, that you're either gay or impotent.” Rowan announced as he casually strode into my room.
I scoffed. “That's a new one.”
“It's becoming harder to suppress them. We have to do something. The elders are being influenced to mount more pressure on you. They want a Luna and Jace is promising them one, you know what’s at stake. They request an audience with you.”
“I'll see to it when I'm back.”
“You booked the entire restaurant?” Rowan questioned.
“Help me adjust the cufflinks.” I replied, ignoring his question.
Reluctantly, he did as I instructed. Patiently waiting for an answer. I sighed in defeat, knowing nothing about me goes past his knowledge.
“Its easier to show you.” I said, dismissively.
He acknowledged it with a low growl and followed my lead. An hour later; we alighted at the restaurant and as I went in, he accompanied me.
“What are we waiting for?” He broke the silence that lingered.
“A client.” I replied, calmly.
“Since when do you have dinner with clients?”
A ghost of a smile appeared on my face and I nodded gently.
Pride-that was what I felt. Pride, for choosing him to be my only confidant and friend.
The loud clanging of heels interrupted the silence and I stood up to welcome her.
My Mate. Clothed in elegance. Beautiful. Innocently seductive.
“Don't tell me she-”
“She's the one Rowan, my impossible girl.” I smirked, my heart swelling with pride.
Elvira halted in front of me, her eyes pasing across a quiet message-I had the dress delivered to her doorstep and gaiev her no choice than to be here. She's my mate. We have to figure this out. Together.
Rowan stiffened for a moment then tilted his head, slightly before heading out.
“Miss Sanchez.” I called out, provocatively.
“I have no intentions of being here.” She fired back as she took her seat.
I laughed softly and began to eat, not saying a word. Shortly afterwards, a voice sounded in my ear.
‘Alpha Varyn.” Rowan's steady voice sounded in my head.
I frowned slightly, irritated.
“Why are you contacting me?” I responded, impatient to cut off the mind-link.
“You have a parcel.” He breathed, his steady voice wavering.
“I don't car-”
“You need to see this Varyn.”
The link snapped and a staff member delivered the supposed parcel and walked away without saying a word.
I frowned at the disrespect. Placing the parcel on the table.
“Open it, aren’t you curious?” Elvira asked.
“Darling, the only thing that needs opening is your heart. Tell me why you're avoiding me.” I replied, smiling.
She pretended to be ignorant and sucked air through her teeth.
“I don't believe in second chances.” She threw, hotly.
“You’re mine Elvira. My mate. I'm not letting you go. I swear on my existence.” I swore, wholeheartedly.
She was caught off guard by my insistence and blushed. I smiled at this and made to speak but a voice sounded in my head, again.
This time, it was familiar. Bearing felicitation of doom.
“Open the parcel.”
The smile on my face disappeared in a nanosecond and as if compelled, I reached forward and ripped off the covering off the parcel.
My hands trembled.
My throat felt parched.
Fear gripped me.
Anxiety seized my soul.
Photos. Bloodstain.
My eyes fixated on the contents of what I held, my world tilting.
‘Chloe.’ I muttered under my breath. The panic long buried resurfaced-this time, it brought havoc as a starring guest.
