The Final Countdown

Chapter 15: Davis's pulse raced as he stood in the safe house, clutching the phone after Marcus's latest threat. He knew this wasn’t just an empty warning. Marcus was playing a game, one where Davis's family was the ultimate prize. He glanced over at Emily, who was comforting Clark and Lewis, keeping them distracted with stories and laughter. Little Lily slept soundly in her crib, blissfully unaware of the danger lurking in the shadows. Davis's chest tightened—he couldn’t let Marcus get anywhere near them. That night, Davis gathered Jack and his security team for a serious discussion. "We have to end this," Davis said firmly. "Marcus won't stop until we're all dead, and I can't keep living like this, waiting for him to strike." Jack nodded in agreement. "We've been tracking Marcus’s network. We found a safe house he’s been using on the outskirts of the city, but we have to be careful. This man has nothing to lose." Davis clenched his fists. "Neither do I. I’m going after him." Emily, overhearing the conversation, approached him. “No,” she said, her voice trembling but strong. “You can't do this alone, Davis. We need you alive. We need you here.” Davis's heart ached as he looked at her. “I know. But I can't let this monster terrorize us anymore. He’s not going to stop until one of us is dead. And I refuse to let that be you or the kids.” Emily’s eyes filled with tears, but she nodded. “Just...promise me you’ll come back. Promise me this is the end of it.” “I promise,” Davis whispered, pulling her into his arms.
