Martha Josie spent the next few days obsessing about her choir audition. She prepared a wide range of songs, all of which she made Martha listen to several times and rank. There were classical arias, show tunes, oldies, and, of course, a few songs by Clarissa. At one point Martha suggested a traditional Mexican folk song. That’s when Josie stopped asking Martha for feedback. As far as Martha could tell her students were still engaged. Several stopped by her office between classes or after school to talk about the readings, which she took as a good sign. She was glad she’d made so many baked goods for office visitors. Other teachers stopped by regularly too, which she attributed to her still being new to the school. And maybe the cookies. Mart
