Chapter 3: The Storm Arrives

907 Words
The next morning, Frost Haven buzzed with excitement. When Lila walked into the library, eager voices echoed through the aisles. It felt like everyone in town was talking about the same thing. “Have you seen the video?” Mrs. Hargrove called out from the front counter, her eyes wide and sparkling with the thrill of gossip. “It’s gone viral! Over a million views already!” Lila forced a weak smile as she set her bag down behind the desk. “What video?” “Oh, you haven’t seen it?” Mrs. Hargrove leaned in and lowered her voice, as if sharing a secret. “William and the boys are skating like professionals! Everyone online is calling Frost Haven the best small-town hockey team in the country! People from all over are commenting, and some even want to visit!” Lila knew she should feel proud. William and the team had worked so hard, and the town needed something to hope for. But as she listened to everyone’s excitement, a deep worry grew in her stomach. More attention meant more pressure, more practices, and more late nights alone, wondering where her husband was and what secrets he might be keeping. The excitement lasted all day. Teenagers crowded around the library’s computer, watching the video and laughing. The mayor stopped by to ask if Lila had seen the news. Even the older patrons who usually complained about noise seemed caught up in it. Everyone was talking about William and the team, hoping the game could change everything for Frosthaven. By evening, everything felt different. Lila was putting books away when the front door burst open. William rushed in, his cheeks flushed and his eyes shining with an energy she hadn’t seen in months. “Lila, you won’t believe this!” he said, hurrying across the room. “The Chicago Storm, a real NHL team, wants to play us. Right here on the pond in three weeks. It’s national news, Lila! There will be TV crews, sponsors, reporters, everything. This could finally save the town and our land.” He pulled her into a tight hug, lifting her feet off the ground as he used to when they were younger, before life became complicated. For a moment, Lila let herself relax in his arms. She closed her eyes and wished time could stop right there. But reality returned. She gently pulled away, her feet touching the floor again. “It’s amazing,” she said, looking for the man she’d fallen in love with. “But William, we really need to talk. About us. About everything that’s falling apart between us.” William’s smile faded, and she saw tension in his jaw. “Can it wait? The mayor just called an emergency meeting. This is important for everyone.” Lila stepped back and crossed her arms tightly over her chest. “Of course. Hockey always comes first.” “Lila, that’s not fair,” William said, pain showing in his eyes. She shook her head, holding back tears. “Just go.” Her voice was barely more than a whisper. He hesitated, then leaned in and kissed her forehead before hurrying out the door, leaving a trail of cold air and uncertainty behind him. After he left, the house felt painfully quiet. Lila stood in the hallway for a long time, listening to her own heartbeat. She finally went to the living room and curled up on the couch, her hand trembling on her stomach. Her secret felt heavier than ever, pressing on her chest with every breath. She wanted to tell William, but whenever she imagined it, she saw the distance in his eyes. Suddenly, her phone rang, its sharp sound breaking the silence. Lila answered, thinking it might be her sister or a neighbor. Instead, a cold, unfamiliar female voice whispered through the line, sending a chill down her spine. “If you want to protect your baby, you need to leave Frosthaven before the game.” The caller hung up before Lila could say anything. Her heart pounded. Who was that? How did they know about the baby? She tried to steady herself, but panic gnawed at her, making her hands shake. Later that night, unable to sleep, Lila searched William’s desk for answers. She went through the drawers, finding only old receipts and family photos at first. Then she found a folder hidden under a stack of papers. Inside were medical documents signed by Dr. Harlan Voss, with notes about appointments and tests Lila didn’t remember. There were also printouts of bank transfers, showing large payments from Vivian Langford.d. Lila’s knees gave out, and she slid to the floor, clutching the papers. Her mind raced as she tried to put the pieces together. Vivian’s name. Dr. Voss’s signature. William’s secrecy. Were they all connected? Was William hiding something from her, or was he trying to protect her from a threat she didn’t understand? Stung her eyes as she stared at the documents, the phone call replaying in her mind. She felt utterly alone, trapped in a web of secrets and lies. The world outside kept celebrating, but inside the Caldwell home, everything was unraveling. Night settled over Frosthaven, darkness pressing against the windows. Lila curled up on the floor, hugging the medical papers to her chest, and cried quietly, hoping the morning would bring answers or at least the strength to face whatever came next.
