SOPHIA'S POV.
It was the day of my engagement party, and I am supposed to be happy but I'm not. There was this feeling in my chest that keeps doubting if I'm doing the right thing. I love Lucas, so what's with the fear and doubt about getting married to him?
Lucas had booked an entire hotel for the party. All the people who swam in were unfamiliar to me. A few were the employees at Revved Automotive, but I had no idea who the others were.
Lucas and I stood in the middle of the filled up room as guest flowed in to congratulate us.
A face I wasn't expecting came forward. It was Mrs Sullivan and Lucas sister, Amelia. I honestly thought they wouldn't want to be here.
To my surprise, Mrs Sullivan smiled as she approached us. "Oh congratulations to you both." She said pleasantly as she pulled Lucas into a hug.
Lucas was as surprise as I am, "mom, I thought you weren't going to make it."
"Why would I miss the engagement of my only son." She shot me a nasty look, "although I am not in approval of your choice, I have to show my support as your mother."
Lucas smiled gratefully, "thank you mom."
After some time, Emma the beautiful blond joined in the gathering, and Mrs Sullivan was all smiles and praises at the sight of her.
Emma congratulated us, and although she is very nice, I couldn't help being jealous of her.
How is it so easy for her to look beautiful and get the love of Lucas family.
Lucas eyes were fixed on Emma as they conversed, talking and laughing, totally forgetting that there was someone called Sophia standing there with them.
Tired of standing there saying nothing and no one acknowledging me, I walked out of the party grounds and stood outside the building watching the dark sky that was filled with twinkling stars.
"What do I do now Jesus?" I spoke to the sky, "I'm not happy, and I don't know what to do about it."
"Call off the engagement," a deep familiar voice spoke behind me, and my head whipped back to find Max standing there.
Something sparked in my brain at the sight of him in a maroon fitting suit and matching pants. He wore sleek black shoes and I noticed that all his earrings were gone.
He had a wine glass in one hand and his other hand in his pocket.
I had trouble just staring at him.
Why does he look so handsome?
"Max, I_I didn't know you were here," I stuttered shyly, looking away from him. Why does his mere presense always makes me feel weird?
Max came closer and stood right beside me, "Lia forced me to come. She says she wants to make it up to me for what she did at her family dinner. She even bought me a suit and made me take off all my earrings," he grinned down at himself, "it's funny that I, Maxuel Williams would ever agree to wear a suit. Love really messes with our heads."
"You don't look bad in it. In fact you look really good." I blurted before I could stop myself. Max raised a brow at me, and I blushed and shyly looked away.
He smiled, "thanks for the compliment Dovey, but I don't think your boyfriend would agree." My mood soured up at the mention of Lucas, and it must have shown on my face because Max asked, "I know it's not my place, and I'm sorry for prying, but do you love him? Lucas I mean."
I frowned in confusion, "of course I love him."
Max shook his head, "I doubt that. If you love him, you should be in there with him at this moment. It's your engagement party, yet you're out here."
I sighed sadly, "I just don't feel like I belong in there. I don't fit in with his family. They make me feel like I'm this lowly worthless bug who doesn't deserve to be by Lucas side."
"If you feel that way, then don't marry him," Max said simply, and I stared at him surprised at his blunt tone. Max shrugged unfazed, "if you are having doubts now, you better quit before it becomes too late. Marriage is not a joke Dovey. You have to think about it more. By the way, how long have you and Lucas been dating anyway?"
"Almost a month now I think."
Max eyes looked like they were about to pop out of their sockets, "you've only dated for a month and you guys want to get married?" He blinked, and blinked again. "Lia and I have been dating for two years now, and we still aren't talking about marriage."
"I guess Lucas and I are just so in love," I said blankly and rubbed my arms at the cold air blowing against my skin.
I had picked out my dress for the party. It was a loose A gown with a short lace sleeve. It was flimsy and easy for the cold to penetrate my skin.
Max noticed me rubbing my arms and he said, "I would offer you my jacket, but I don't want a repeat of what happened at the Sullivan's mansion last time. I still feel guilty about it, and I apologize on Lia's behalf."
"It's fine. I hold nothing against you, or her. I should be the one apologizing for what Lucas accused you of."
"I don't blame him," he said grinning "he knows I'm a catch, and girls throw themselves at me. He's just scared that his fiancee is going to fall victim."
I giggled at that, "you're so full of yourself."
"You can't deny that I'm hot." He said with a shrug and I rolled my eyes as we both laughed.
"Sophia!" Our laughter seized immediately at the sound of Lucas voice. It was hard and harsh.
We both glance behind us, startled to find a very pissed off Lucas. "L_Lucas." I quickly left Max side and hurried to his side, but Lucas eyes remain fixed on Max, glaring at him with hatred.
"Why do I always find you with this man anytime I am looking for you, and why do you always disappear out of my sight without my permission? !"
"Dude chill. We were just talking, and I don't think she needs your permission to go places. She's your girlfriend, not your servant."
Lucas took a threatening step towards Max and fear gripped me. "You keep your dirty mouth out of this conversation man, or I'll throw you out of this place. Stay away from my girlfriend, she's actually my fiancee now. Keep that in mind and watch yourself!"
Max didn't look at all offended by Luca's rudeness. "I'm dating your sister, so I don't think you have anything to worry about."
"You obviously look like a player and a scumbag. My sister must be out of her mind for dating someone as worthless as you."
Max jaw clenched, "you don't have to insult me Mr Sullivan. I respect Lia and your girlfriend and that's why I haven't punched your face yet."
Lucas blazed forward, but I manage to hold him back, "you bastard! I dare you!!" He screamed.
"Lucas please that's enough," I pleaded, holding him back.
Max didn't even bulge from his position, he just kept watching Lucas as if waiting for him to pounce first.
The two men were fairly the same height, but Max was packed with muscles, and I doubt Lucas would win in a fight with him.
"Stay away from Sophia! This is my last warning to you!" With that, Lucas grabbed my wrist and dragged me back to the party.
I glance over my shoulder and mouthed sorry to Max. Because of me, he got insulted by Lucas again. I was scared he would get angry at me. But all he did was smirk.
I smiled to myself.
That guy sure is something else.
