I had practiced for hours in the gym at school. I stayed way longer than necessary, to ensure that Charlie would no longer be at my house. I couldn’t deal with a confrontation, with her or my mother. Luckily, when I arrived she was gone and my mother was engrossed in whatever TV show she was into. I went straight to the shower, then I grabbed my books and started studying. I’d picked up way too many classes. I always did this—bit off more than I could chew. With basketball, with studies, and now with my relationships. I don’t know when I fell asleep, all I know is that I fell asleep hard. I heard a noise, waking me up from my slumber. I wiped the drool off the corner of my mouth and straightened my glasses. It didn’t register at first what had woken me up, until I heard the rattle again
