Allen's pupils shrank, and he ran out.
On the empty deck, only a suicide note was left behind.
Allen held the note, his fingers trembling.
The note read:
Allen, Lucy was right. Our relationship is already immoral, and the child we conceived can never see the light.
I don't blame her for calling me shameless. Since no one can accept me or my baby, I'll use my death to set you both free.
After they fished Annie out of the water, Allen ran dozens of red lights and sped her to the hospital.
Then he pulled out her suicide note and threw it in my face.
"Go on," he said. "How long have you been bullying Annie behind my back? Just because she took care of you when you were drunk one time while I was away, she deserved to be humiliated and abused by you? It was my fault she got pregnant. If you're angry, take it out on me. Annie is innocent!"
Facing his accusations, my chest ached so much I couldn't speak.
I picked up that ridiculous, laughable suicide note and skimmed through it.
I tried to curl my lips into a smile, but I couldn't.
"If I said I didn't do it, would you believe me?"
Allen grabbed me by the throat, his eyes bloodshot.
"Annie nearly died because of you, and you ask if I'd believe you? Do you even believe yourself? Lucy, you've become jealous and fake. You're so disgusting you make me sick!"
The next second, my face went pale and I started heaving.
After a long moment, Allen stared at my stomach and stepped closer.
"You're pregnant, aren't you?"
I froze. My period hadn't come in a long time.
Allen's eyes turned cold as he looked at my belly, as if he were looking at something already dead.
"How could you get pregnant at a time like this? Are you trying to upset Annie even more? You will go right now, this instant, and kneel in front of Annie to apologize. You'll stay there until she forgives you!"
Tears burst from my eyes. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"I won't kneel. Why should I? I didn't do anything wrong…"
Hearing that, Allen's face darkened even more, and his voice was practically a growl.
"Fine. Since you never change, then use the baby in your belly to apologize to Annie."
The moment he said that, it felt like my spine had been snapped.
I heard myself choking out a single word: "Fine."
I had been alone for too long.
I was so lonely that I desperately wanted to keep this little life that was mine alone.
Allen dragged me and threw me down in front of Annie's hospital bed.
My knees hit the floor with a dull thud.
The moment Annie saw me, she screamed in terror.
"Allen, make her go away! I don't want to see her!"
The more he felt for Annie, the more hatred burned in his eyes as he glared at me.
"Don't be afraid, Annie. Tell me exactly what she did to you."
Annie sobbed and accused me of teaming up with the household staff to beat her, of calling her shameless for getting into her brother-in-law's bed.
"I have proof!"
She lifted her hospital gown, revealing purple bruises all over her body.
"I was too scared to say anything until now. This time, she called me a shameless w***e and insulted our child, calling him a bastard. I couldn't take it anymore, so I tried to end it all by jumping into the sea."
When he finished listening, Allen's chest heaved violently, and rage twisted his face.
"Lucy, the evidence is right here. What do you have to say for yourself?
Don't forget, you started out as a hostess who climbed into my bed. You're no better than anyone else. If anything, you're worse."
Veins bulging on his forehead, Allen raised his hand and delivered a loud, sharp slap.
The world spun, and I crashed into a sharp corner of a table.
Then a bone-deep, searing pain swept through me, curling my body up.
Allen watched coldly as I struggled on the floor. His thin lips parted slightly.
"Stop pretending. Annie nearly miscarried, and now you're copying her? You're disgusting."
Sweat beaded on my forehead, but I couldn't find a single word to argue back.
Minute after minute passed. Finally, frowning, Allen realized something was wrong.
"Lucy? Haven't you faked enough? Get up right now!"
Gradually, the blood beneath me spread and stained the floor red.
"The baby… I'm losing the baby…"
Allen's fingertips touched the warm blood. His body went stiff, and he was about to pull me up when the hospital room door was violently slammed open from outside.
The next second, a man I hadn't seen in years, a man I never thought I'd see again in this lifetime, pulled me tightly into his arms.
