THE MAN BEHIND THE DOOR

1203 Words
The voice beyond the door filled the room like a dark cloud, leaving Elena breathless and frozen. The words echoed in her mind - "You've been missing for twelve years." Twelve years. It seemed impossible. How could she not remember her life, her experiences, her friends? The maintenance room suddenly felt suffocating, too hot, too real. Beside her, Bisi remained silent, adding to Elena's unease. The man's voice outside called her name, calm but certain. Elena felt a shiver run down her spine. "Who is he?" she whispered to Bisi, who hesitated before answering, "His name is Adrian." The name meant nothing to her, yet something strange stirred within her. A spark of recognition flashed briefly in Elena's mind and then vanished. "Do you know him?" Elena inquired. Bisi nodded slowly. "Unfortunately." Outside, Adrian knocked once, a deliberate sound. "Elena." Silence followed. Then— "If Blackwood Security finds you first, you won't get another chance," warned Bisi. Elena turned to Bisi, looking puzzled. "What does that mean?" Bisi sighed, running a hand over her forehead. "It means we need to make a decision now." "What decision?" "Whether to trust him." The response wasn't reassuring at all. Elena couldn't help but let out a short, nervous, almost hysterical laugh. "Trust him? I don't even know who he is." "I don't have all the answers either." "That's not comforting." "It shouldn't be." The room fell silent once more. Outside, footsteps echoed down the hallway. It sounded like more than one person, getting closer. Adrian seemed to hear them too, his voice hushed. "They're almost here." Panic began to well up in Elena again. Every option seemed perilous. Trusting strangers was risky, but not trusting them seemed equally dangerous. "What should I do?" she whispered. Bisi fixed her with a direct gaze. "Listen to your instincts." Elena almost laughed once more. Her instincts felt utterly unreliable now. Suddenly, the door rattled. It wasn't Adrian. The noise came from further down the corridor. There was a loud crash, followed by shouting. Bisi's expression changed suddenly. "They've found this floor," she said. The footsteps outside grew louder and faster, purposeful, closing in. Adrian acted quickly, "Open the door now," he commanded. Elena froze as Bisi stared at her. The hallway erupted with noise - voices, running, commands being shouted. The sound was getting closer by the second. Then, a gunshot rang out, echoing through the corridor. Elena jumped, her heart racing. Bisi was the first to move, grabbing the lock. "Wait!" Elena shouted, but it was too late. The lock clicked, the door opened, and for the first time, Elena laid eyes on Adrian. He was taller than she had imagined, in his early thirties with dark hair, sharp features, and dressed in a black coat over a fitted shirt. There was nothing particularly extraordinary about him, yet his presence filled the hallway. His eyes met Elena's and held her gaze for several seconds. No one spoke. Adrian stared at her as if he had seen a ghost, his expression shifting from shock to relief to pain and then back to neutrality. "You're alive," he said quietly, almost to himself. Elena took a cautious step back, to which Adrian's expression softened slightly. "This is all so confusing," Elena said, her voice full of disbelief. The sound of footsteps approaching cut her off. Adrian's gaze snapped to the corridor, his expression hardening. "We have to go," he urged. "Not until you tell me what's going on," Elena insisted. Another gunshot rang out, closer this time. Adrian looked back at her, his patience wearing thin. "If you stay here, you won't make it," he warned. Elena fell silent, but only for a moment. Then she pointed at him. "You claim I've been missing for twelve years?" she questioned. "Yes," Adrian confirmed. "And you think I should believe that?" she pressed. "No," he replied, surprising her. Adrian continued, "I expect you to survive long enough to find out the truth for yourself." The corridor lights flickered, and a blaring alarm echoed through the building as red emergency lights flashed above. Adrian cursed softly. "Lockdown's been activated," he muttered. Bisi looked worried. "So soon?" "They know she's here," Adrian said grimly. Elena's stomach churned. "Who knows?" she asked, but neither of them answered. Adrian turned to leave. "Let's go," he urged. "No," Elena refused, crossing her arms. Adrian halted and slowly turned back, a hint of surprise crossing his face. Then, he reached into his coat, causing Elena to tense up. Instead of a weapon, he revealed a photograph. It was very old. Passing it to her, she accepted it reluctantly. Her breath hitched as she gazed at the image showing a family in front of a grand mansion - a woman, a man, a young boy, and a little girl no older than six, beaming brightly. The girl stood between the adults, and Elena found herself captivated by her, recognizing the same eyes, smile, and face as her own. "No," she whispered in disbelief. Adrian spoke calmly, revealing that the photo was taken just three days before the fire. Elena's hand trembled as the edges of the photo shook visibly, and the sight of the mansion triggered a sense of familiarity, not from personal recollection but from glimpses in documents, surveillance images, and records - Blackwood Manor. A sharp pain throbbed behind her eyes, followed by a sudden flash of memory: a little girl running, laughter, a woman's voice, the scent of roses, then smoke, heat, and screams. The memory fragmented, leaving Elena gasping as the photograph slipped from her grasp, only to be caught by Adrian, whose expression shifted. "You remembered something," he observed, prompting her to gaze back at him, overwhelmed with fear. "I'm not sure what I just saw." "Don't worry about it." Suddenly, the hallway behind Adrian filled with noise. A group of men emerged at the far end of the corridor. Dressed in black uniforms. Armed and moving swiftly. One of them yelled, "There!" Adrian sprang into action. "Run!" In a flash, the armed men advanced. Bisi grabbed Elena's arm. Adrian positioned himself between them and the approaching group. A gun materialized in his hand. Elena's eyes widened in shock. The first gunshot reverberated through the corridor. Followed by another and another. Chaos erupted all around them. "Let's go!" Adrian shouted. This time, Elena followed his command. The three of them sprinted down the hallway. Alarms blared overhead. Red lights flashed incessantly. The building now felt alive, watching, tracking, hunting. They reached a stairwell. Bisi pushed the door open. The trio hurried inside. The heavy door slammed shut behind them. For a moment, silence enveloped them. Then Adrian suddenly stopped in his tracks. His eyes locked onto something. Elena followed his gaze. A symbol had been painted on the wall. Fresh black paint depicted a circle and a flame. And below it— A message. Three words. SHE REMEMBERS NOW. No one uttered a word. No one dared to move. There was only one possible explanation for the existence of that message - someone had been there. Just moments ago, they were watching and waiting. And somehow, they already knew what had transpired in Elena's mind.
