THE NAME SHE FORGOT

1532 Words
The room felt like it was spinning. Elena couldn't believe her eyes as she gazed at the photograph. Her heart was pounding in her chest. The image was crystal clear, almost too clear. There was no mistaking it. The woman in the picture, standing in front of the imposing wooden door, was her. Not someone who looked like her, not a distant relative – it was undeniably her. Every detail was familiar, from the curve of her jaw to the shape of her eyes, even the small scar near her wrist from her childhood. Behind her stood a man she didn't recognize. He was tall and broad-shouldered, his face partly hidden in shadows, but his posture exuded a strange confidence. It was as if he knew something she didn't, as if he had been waiting for this moment. Elena's gaze snapped back to the photo. "What is this?" she demanded, her voice tinged with disbelief. Bisi didn't respond immediately, her expression remaining calm and unchanged. "Where did you find this photograph?" Elena pressed, her tone becoming more urgent. "You've seen it before," Bisi replied confidently. "I haven't," Elena insisted, her stomach churning at the certainty in Bisi's voice. "You have," Bisi reiterated, causing Elena's unease to escalate. After a few moments of tense silence, Bisi let out a soft sigh. "That's what they wanted," she murmured, her words hanging heavy in the air. Elena's thoughts were racing, nothing seemed to make sense. Just an hour ago, her main worry had been about filing shipment records. But now, a mysterious file had appeared out of nowhere, and strangers seemed to know her name. Someone had given her a warning, and her colleague was talking as if she was part of some secret she couldn't recall. Feeling confused and anxious, she took a step back and exclaimed, "I don't understand what's going on." Bisi's voice, tinged with sympathy, replied, "I know. That's why you're in danger." The lights flickered once more, this time for a longer period. Darkness briefly engulfed the room before the bulbs stabilized. Both women stood still, feeling the eerie silence that had fallen over the office. Usually bustling with the sounds of phones ringing, conversations, and footsteps, it was now eerily quiet. Elena, noticing the unusual hush, asked, "What's happening outside?" Bisi looked towards the corridor and said, "They've started." A shiver ran down Elena's spine as she asked, "They?" Bisi didn't respond directly but moved closer to her, urging, "Listen carefully. You need to leave this building." The same warning she had received from the mysterious caller echoed in her mind, causing her heart to skip a beat. "Who are you people?" Elena inquired, but Bisi simply replied, "No time. You keep saying that." She added, "There really isn't." Bisi's gaze shifted back to the hallway. It was the first time she seemed genuinely nervous since entering the room, and Elena found that more concerning than anything else. "What happens if I stay?" she asked, her voice tinged with anxiety. Bisi hesitated before speaking softly, "They'll take you." The words hit Elena like a bucket of cold water, causing her to nervously chuckle, "Take me where?" The lack of response only deepened the unease, the silence feeling like a confirmation in itself. Bisi picked up the Blackwood card from the table and extended it towards Elena, saying, "Come with me." Elena hesitated, torn between her instincts warning her of a possible trap and the sense that remaining in that place was even riskier. Before she could decide, a loud crash reverberated through the building, startling both women. The noise originated from the far end of the corridor, accompanied by shouts and then a sudden silence. Bisi's complexion turned pale. "We're running out of time," she said urgently. Elena's heart raced, and she asked, "What was that?" Bisi's response came too swiftly, too smoothly, as if she had anticipated this all along. Another crash followed, closer this time, followed by a door being forcefully opened, heavy footsteps approaching. Bisi muttered a curse under her breath. Then she clasped Elena's wrist firmly and urged her to move forward. Driven by instinct, Elena complied, following her lead as they hurried into the corridor. The office appeared eerily deserted, with abandoned desks, powered-on computers, and half-full coffee cups left behind. An unsettling silence pervaded the space, devoid of any signs of life. It was as if everyone had vanished in an instant. Concerned, Elena whispered, "What happened to everyone?" Bisi, sensing the urgency, urged her to keep moving without stopping. As they briskly passed through rows of empty workstations, conference rooms, and offices, a sense of unease settled in. Suddenly, Elena noticed movement at the far end of the hallway – three figures standing motionless, watching them intently. Although their faces were obscured by the distance, a strange sense of familiarity sent shivers down Elena's spine. The figures started walking towards them at a deliberate pace, not in haste but with a purpose. Feeling unsettled, Elena asked, "Who are they?" Bisi, focused on their escape, simply replied, "Keep moving." The echoing sound of their footsteps reverberated as they navigated through the corridors, eventually spotting a fire exit that offered a glimmer of hope. Elena suggested, "We can leave through there," but Bisi's expression turned grave as she dismissed the idea, stating, "No." Perplexed, Elena questioned, "What do you mean no exits?" Bisi halted, locking eyes with her before delivering a chilling revelation that sent a wave of dread through Elena. "This place was never designed for you to escape from." Before Elena could respond, the emergency lights suddenly flickered on, bathing the room in a deep red hue as the regular lights went out entirely. A loud mechanical hum resonated throughout the building, followed by a calm, male, emotionless voice emanating from the ceiling speakers, stating, "Subject located." Elena felt a chill run down her spine, her heart nearly stopping as the voice continued, "Containment protocol activated." Bisi cursed under her breath, then urgently grabbed Elena's arm, whispering, "Let's go." This time, Elena didn't hesitate and they sprinted through the corridors, the eerie red emergency lights casting unsettling shadows around them. Every corner seemed menacing, every sound magnified. The sound of approaching footsteps, numerous and rapid, spurred them on as the pursuer no longer bothered with stealth. Elena's chest burned, her legs ached, but sheer terror propelled her forward. Turning one corner after another, they finally reached a maintenance door which Bisi pushed open, and the two women stumbled inside, greeted by darkness. Bisi quickly locked the door behind them, and for a moment, silence reigned except for the sound of their labored breathing. Elena leaned against the wall, trying to make sense of the surreal events of the day. Something in the room caught her eye – it wasn't just a maintenance room; the space bore the marks of age and history. The room was much older, with dust covering everything. Metal filing cabinets lined the walls, and across from them stood a large steel cabinet with its door partially open. Inside, dozens of folders were neatly labeled and identical. Elena moved closer, and one file immediately caught her eye. Her stomach sank as she read the label, "HART, ELENA." Despite Bisi's pale face and protest, Elena reached for the folder and pulled it free, feeling its weight. With trembling fingers, she opened it to find photographs, medical reports, school records, surveillance logs - years of information documenting her entire life, observed and recorded meticulously. The realization that someone had been watching her for years hit her hard. As she flipped through page after page, year after year, her vision blurred. It seemed impossible until she reached the final document - a birth certificate. Confusion filled Elena as she saw that the name listed wasn't Elena Hart. The mother's name was unfamiliar, and the father's section was blank. Instead of her own name, there was another she had never seen before but somehow recognized instantly - Elena Blackwood. The folder slipped from her hands. The room started spinning around Bisi as she closed her eyes, hoping Elena wouldn't find out this way. "No..." Elena's voice cracked in disbelief, memories flooding back in a sudden rush. A glimpse of a little girl, bathed in firelight in a grand house, echoes of voices shouting, then engulfed in smoke. The vision vanished as quickly as it came, leaving Elena grasping her head in pain, staggering backward and questioning, "What is happening to me?" Bisi moved closer, but before she could speak, a loud metallic sound pierced the air as the maintenance door was being forcefully opened. The handle rattled violently thrice before falling silent, leaving Elena anxiously staring at the door, listening intently. Suddenly, a deep male voice resonated through the room, chillingly calm and addressing her by name. "Elena, I know you're in there." The unfamiliar voice sent shivers down her spine, as if she already knew its owner deep within her being. With each word, her certainty shattered, as the man's voice demanded, "Open the door." Silence hung in the air before the words came softly, "You've been gone for twelve whole years."
