CHAPTER TWENTY ONE — Something Between Us, Again

752 Words
Some connections don’t restart loudly…they restart in small, intentional moments that feel too real to ignore. ——— It didn’t happen all at once. It never did with them. It started with something simple. A message. Then a reply that came faster than before. Then another conversation that lasted longer than intended. And somehow— without either of them naming it— they were speaking more again. Not like before. Better than before. Keira noticed it first in the way she waited for his replies. Not anxiously. Not desperately. Just… aware. And Ziven noticed it in the way he started choosing words more carefully. Not to avoid mistakes. But to be present. One evening, Ziven asked her to meet. Not for anything serious. Just to walk. Keira agreed. Without overthinking it. That alone felt different. The air was calm when she arrived. Soft evening light. Quiet streets. A world that didn’t interrupt them anymore. Ziven was already there. Waiting. Not impatient. Just steady. “Hey,” he said when she approached. “Hey,” she replied. And they started walking. Side by side. Naturally now. Not forced. Not careful in the same way as before. Just… together. “You’ve been different lately,” Keira said after a while. Ziven glanced at her. “How?” “More… present,” she said softly. He nodded slightly. “I’ve been trying.” Keira looked ahead. “Trying what?” “To not disappear in my own thoughts when I’m with you,” he said. That made her quiet for a moment. Because she understood what he meant. More than she expected to. “I do that too,” she admitted. Ziven looked at her. “When?” “All the time,” she said honestly. A small silence followed. Not uncomfortable. Just reflective. They walked a little further. Side by side. Not too close. Not distant either. Balanced. “I like this,” Keira said suddenly. Ziven turned slightly. “This?” “This version of us,” she clarified softly. That made him slow his steps slightly. “We’re still figuring it out,” he said. “I know,” she replied. Then added— “But it feels… safer now.” That word mattered. Safer. Because that’s what they lost before. Ziven stopped walking briefly. Keira stopped too. Not because something was wrong. But because something needed to be said without movement distracting it. “I don’t want to confuse you again,” he said quietly. Keira shook her head slightly. “You’re not confusing me.” A pause. “I’m just paying attention this time,” she added. That landed between them softly. Ziven looked at her for a long moment. Not searching. Not hesitating. Just… present. And Keira felt it again. That awareness. That pull. That quiet tension that never fully disappeared. “I missed this,” he admitted. Keira’s voice softened. “Me too.” A silence settled. But this one felt different again. More charged. More honest. More dangerous in its softness. Ziven took a small step closer. Not sudden. Not impulsive. Just… natural. Keira didn’t move back. That was enough. “We’re not rushing,” she said quietly. “I know,” he replied. But neither of them stepped away. The space between them was smaller now. Not gone. Just… thinner. And both of them felt it. Keira looked up at him. And for a moment— everything else disappeared again. Not like before when it broke them. But like before when it almost meant something. Except now— they were aware of it. Together. Ziven exhaled softly. “I think I’m starting to like you differently again,” he said. Keira didn’t respond immediately. Not because she was surprised. But because she was feeling it too. “Differently how?” she asked softly. Ziven hesitated. Then— “Like I don’t want to lose you again,” he said. That wasn’t a confession. But it was close. Keira’s expression softened. “I already don’t want that,” she admitted. A pause. And that was it. Not a declaration. Not a promise. Just truth. Shared quietly between them. They stayed like that for a moment longer. Not moving closer. Not pulling apart. Just existing in something that finally felt mutual again. “I should walk you back,” Ziven said softly. Keira nodded. “Okay.” But neither of them moved immediately. Because now— even simple things felt different. More intentional. More felt. More real.
