CHAPTER SEVENTEEN — Close But Careful

710 Words
Some moments don’t ask to be repeated…they ask to be handled differently. —— It started with honesty. Not the easy kind. The kind that takes time before it comes out. They had been talking for a while now. More than before. Less than before they broke apart. But something about today felt different. Quieter. Heavier. More real. “I used to think I was good at understanding people without them saying much,” Keira said softly. Ziven looked at her. “Used to?” She nodded slightly. “Not anymore.” A pause. “Because of me?” he asked gently. Keira didn’t answer immediately. Not because she didn’t know. But because she was deciding how honest to be. “Because of both of us,” she said finally. That landed quietly between them. Ziven leaned back slightly. “I didn’t realize how much I assumed,” he admitted. Keira looked at him. “What do you mean?” “I thought staying quiet meant I was being considerate,” he said. Then added— “But sometimes it just meant I wasn’t present enough.” That honesty shifted something. Small. But real. Keira lowered her gaze for a moment. “I thought giving space meant I was being strong,” she said softly. Ziven shook his head slightly. “But it also made you unreachable.” A pause. Not defensive. Not tense. Just… understood. For a moment— neither of them spoke. But the silence wasn’t distance anymore. It was reflection. “You’re different now,” Keira said quietly. Ziven looked at her. “How?” “You say things now,” she said. Then added softly— “You don’t just think them.” A faint smile touched his face. “I had time to think about what silence cost.” That made her look at him longer than she intended. Because she had too. “I don’t want to misread you again,” Keira admitted. Ziven nodded. “Then don’t.” A pause. “Tell me when you don’t understand something,” he added. Keira exhaled softly. “That sounds simple.” “It’s not,” he replied. That made her smile faintly. “No,” she agreed. “It’s not.” They were quiet again. But this time— the quiet felt safe. Too safe, maybe. Because Keira found herself noticing small things again. The way he looked at her when she wasn’t speaking. The way he paused before answering her. The way he stayed present instead of disappearing into thought. And she realized— he was doing the same. “You still overthink,” Ziven said suddenly. Keira looked up. “I don’t.” He raised an eyebrow slightly. “You just did.” That made her breathe out a small laugh. Unexpected. Soft. Real. “You notice too much,” she said again. “I learned to,” he replied. A pause. Then softer— “Because I missed too much the first time.” That line stayed longer than expected. Keira’s expression softened. “I don’t want us to repeat that,” she said quietly. “We won’t,” Ziven said. Not immediately confident. But certain enough to feel real. There was a shift then. Subtle. Unspoken. Not a return to what they were before. But something new forming between them. Something more aware. More intentional. Keira reached for her cup. Their hands didn’t touch. But they were closer than they had been in a long time. And neither of them moved away. That was the change. “I should probably go soon,” Keira said softly. Ziven nodded. “I know.” But neither of them stood immediately. Because leaving didn’t feel like escape anymore. It felt like pausing something that was finally being rebuilt properly. “You’re still careful,” Keira said. Ziven looked at her. “So are you.” A small silence. Then— “Is that bad?” she asked. He shook his head slightly. “No.” A pause. “It just means we’re not rushing again,” he added. Keira nodded slowly. And for the first time— that felt like something safe. Not uncertain. Not fragile. Just… careful love learning how to exist again.
